Marcus Trescothick will extend his famous career into a 24th season after agreeing a new contract with Somerset.

The 2005 Ashes-winning opener is one of four players to have signed new deals at Somerset, who have confirmed a one-year contract for him and two-year agreements with Max Waller, Jack Leach and Josh Davey.

News of Trescothick's deal comes a day after fellow golden oldies Paul Collingwood - who turns 40 next year - sign a contract extension at Durham.

    Williams gets chancepublished at 11:30

    Rugby Union

Liam Williams is set to start Wales' World Cup opener against Uruguay, with full-back Leigh Halfpenny out injured.

Williams has not played since having foot surgery in June, but coach Warren Gatland has no concerns over the 24-year-old's fitness levels.

Gatland, though, did say the Scarlets back has been in pain during training.

"We want him to start against Uruguay because he's going to need some rugby," said Gatland, whose side face the South Americans in Cardiff on 20 September.

Jack Shardlow:  If we're going for goals-to-game ratio, best striker is 'Own Goals'! Never played a game for us, but has somehow got 49 goals.

Dabiel Kinrade: Rooney. World Cup goals? Write off all against San Marino he needs to score 70 to have any merit.

Well, this is how the San Marino FA marked the occasion on its official Twitter account.

Lovely. So let's not spoil it by mentioning that their opponents Lithuania went on to score a stoppage time goal and win 2-1...

Grundy:Alan Shearer for me, mainly because of Euro 96. Also, the striker from your teen years is usually your fave.

Nick Hunt: Easier to score goals in Charlton's day. Football wasn't so tactical then - every team is well coached. Give Rooney his due!

Jesse Norman MP suggested London Marathon winners and medallists and "potentially British athletes" were under suspicion. Radcliffe was not specifically named.

Mark Bierton: Harry Kane is better than Rooney. He will beat 50 goals for England, not including penalties.

Wayne Dixon: If you was to pick your England team from past and present how many would pick Rooney in the starting line up?

Mark Harrison: Jimmy Greaves goals per game record speaks for itself.

Mark Pratt: It can be argued about all day but by the same yard stick everybody is beating Rooney with, Shearer, Lineker, Owen et al never won anything either.

Tom Holmes: Lineker's England career was half the length of Rooney's and he scored ten times as many World Cup goals.

McHugh: Rooney the greatest? No, Gary Lineker scored more important goals, Greaves was dropped too early & Charlton was sheer class!

James Aldworth: Michael Owen would have beaten the record but for injuries. He was a fantastic goal scorer! A true great!

James Sanders: Many of Wayne Rooney's England goals have either been penalties or tap-ins, while he rarely scores in important matches.

Some responses from the BBC Match of the Day Facebook page:

Joseph Hill:  Give it about 10 years after he retires and everyone will be calling Rooney a legend. It's an odd thing that some football fans either; can't appreciate a player that is active at the moment or just want to look clever by comparing them with a player from the past.I hope that the majority of these negative comments about Rooney, are coming from non-English fans. If not, it's really bizarre.

    gImage source, Getty Images

Shane Kemp: If it weren't for the media, Rooney would not be playing right now. Harry Kane or Theo Walcott should be leading the line as they are the in form - not a player that is now unable to score from open play.

Osian Davies: Greaves and Lineker were the greatest England attackers. Not taking anything away from what Rooney's done though, but he needs some massive performances at a few major tournaments before he gets near the greatest.
