Despite Dick Advocaat’s obvious disappointment in defeat, there were plenty of positives for the Dutchman to take from Sunderland’s performance.

The movement of the front players was encouraging, with Fabio Borini fitting seamlessly into the team as though he’d never left and Ola Toivonen proving a useful foil from midfield.

Jermain Defoe revelled in his central role, Yann M’Vila again looked assured and classy in his defensive midfield position and Billy Jones arguably had his best game of the season at right back.

The fact the game was lost in the final 20 minutes was evidence of the work that still needs to be done on match fitness for those signed in the transfer window.

The outcome could have been different if Roger Federer had taken more than four of the 23 break points he created, but the Swiss was not able to rush this opponent in the way he did his others.

Since Rod Laver in 1969, Jimmy Connors, Mats Wilander and Rafael Nadal have all won three Grand Slams in a single season, but only Federer - and now Djokovic - have done it at least twice.
