But forget all this pesky European nonsense - let's turn to the real stuff for a moment.

Rampant Brighton extended their lead at the top of the Championship to five points with victory over bottom side Rotherham.

Israel international Tomer Hemed and Dale Stephens got the goals in a 2-0 win.

Here are the rest of the results in the second tier...

    Wales' Bale concernpublished at 09:12

Gareth Bale, however, didn't enjoy the Madrid match quite as much as Ronaldo.

The 26-year-old suffered what appeared to be a calf injury playing against Shakhtar in the Champions League encounter.

Bale was replaced by Mateo Kovacic after 32 minutes in the Bernabeu.

It is worrying news for Wales, who face Bosnia-Herzegovina on 10 October and then Andorra three days later in Euro 2016 qualifiers - needing one point from those remaining matches to reach the finals in France.

Another good night for Cristiano Ronaldo, who moved three clear of Lionel Messi at the top of the Champions League scoring charts after a hat-trick against Shakhtar Donetsk.

His treble, which included two spot-kicks, took him to 80 Champions League goals and eight in his last two games.

Ronaldo's third was a header after Marcelo's shot had been parried.

Karim Benzema had tapped in Real's opener after keeper Andriy Pyatov dropped a cross, while Shakhtar had Taras Stepanenko sent off.

    Luke Shaw injury

Dr Ralph Rogers, a consultant in sports medicine, has been speaking to BBC Radio 5 live about Luke Shaw's injury.

“He is looking at between six and nine months out, I would say," said Rogers.

"I have heard people say he will be back in six months but that depends on what type of fracture it is. It is not written in stone – it will be according to what he can do and when he can do it.

“Manchester United will get him up quickly to start the rehab process. He will use an Alter-G anti-gravity treadmill, which allows you to mobilise with less of your body weight.

"You want to get the joint moving, you don’t want it to get too stiff.”

    'Struggling to convince'published at 08:34

    Man City v JUventus

    Phil McNulty

Once again this was a night where City, dominant domestically with five wins out of five in the Premier League, still looked like they are struggling to convince themselves they belong in the exalted company of the Champions League.

Juventus' pedigree is clear - they reached last season's final - but they had not won a game all season until beating City, whose cast-iron confidence in the league looks to be somewhat stripped away here and opponents like the experienced Italians are only too happy to expose those flaws in self-belief.

This even seems to extend to City's fans, anxious throughout and streaming out in droves even before three minutes of stoppage time, clearly not convinced their team would rescue a point.

City slip up againpublished at 08:30

    Man City v Juventus

On the other side of Manchester, it wasn't a great European night either.- though at least City manager Manuel Pellegrini may reflect that at least his players escaped injury-free in defeat to Juventus.

The Blues looked to be on course for victory when Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini headed into his own net under pressure from Vincent Kompany.

But Paul Pogba's superb ball allowed Mario Mandzukic to equalise, then Alvaro Morata curled a precise left-foot finish beyond Joe Hart for the 81st-minute winner.

City have struggled to make a serious impact in the Champions League and have never won their opening home game in the group stage.

    PSV v Man United

Shawhad started all of United's eight games this season, as well as playing in England's European Championship qualifiers against San Marino and Switzerland.

When Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey suffered a similar injury against Stoke in 2010, he was ruled out for nine months.

Less than an hour after suffering the injury, Shaw wrote on Twitter: , external"Thank you everyone for your messages, words can't describe how gutted I am, my road to recovery starts now, I will come back stronger."

Toronto decided against a last-minute bid, as did the Azerbaijan capital of Baku. The IOC will select the host city in September 2017.
