'Blatter should step down immediately'published at 17:52

    Fifa scandal

    Richard Conway
BBC Radio 5 live sports news correspondent

Cobus de Swardt, managing director of anti-corruption agency Transparency International, said today:

“The criminal investigations at Fifa have now reached the very top, showing that the organisation is not fit for purpose. It needs independent oversight immediately. No statement from the current management about reform can be trusted. Sepp Blatter should have nothing to do with Fifa while these investigations are continuing."

"As we have said in the past, without a real independent reform commission there can be no confidence that FIFA can end this corruption crisis.

"The billions of football fans around the world have watched as FIFA’s name has become synonymous with corruption. It is now time for a change.

“Sepp Blatter should step down immediately.”

Blatter to stay or go?published at 17:43

    Fifa scandal

The Guardian's David Conn also believes it is still difficult to imagine Blatter stepping down, despite how difficult it could be to continue in his role as Fifa president until February.

He added: “It is incredible to many people he stood for re-election not only earlier this year during a massive corruption scandal, but even in 2011 the rival candidate (Mohamed Bin Hammam of Asia) was knocked off the ballot paper over his own corruption scandal, yet Sepp Blatter has always sailed blissfully on saying he has to be the captain of the ship.

“It seems extraordinary he would stay on as president until the designated time in February, but you would rather bet on him staying on rather than stepping down.”

Blatter investigation 'still stunning news'published at 17:40

    Fifa scandal

Guardian sports writer David Conn has told BBC Radio 5 live it is "still stunning news" Sepp Blatter is being investigated under criminal proceedings in Switzerland.

He said: “You can get too used to it, but if you take a step back a bit, it’s not long ago Fifa denied any wrongdoing and Sepp Blatter’s position seemed unassailable. Now after a serious of corruption scandals the president is being named.

“What is significant is that it comes from the criminal authorities in his own country where he always seemed so comfortable that’s he’s under serious criminal investigation. So you could say not surprised, but it is still startling news.”
