London has turned down the chance to host the start of the 2017 Tour de France, angering the race owners.

London beat bids from Edinburgh, Manchester and several German regions to stage the Grand Depart.

But last week, a day before contracts were meant to be signed, Transport for London (TfL) said it was pulling out.

"To ensure value for money we must make difficult choices," said Leon Daniels, managing director of surface transport at TfL.

Thompson would not be drawn on any potential new manager and said there is no time limit on filling the vacancy.

"It's not just me who's had a fall-out with him," added the forward, 29, in Rooney - The Man Behind The Goals, to be shown on BBC One on 5 October.

The England captain added: "I went in to see him and just said if you're not going to play me it might be better I moved on - then all of a sudden it's all over the press I put in a transfer request, which I never did."

Johanna Konta - who earlier beat Victoria Azarenka to reach the last 16 at the Wuhan Open in China - has been talking about her rise up the rankings and her new status as British number one, overtaking Heather Watson.

"It's obviously nice to hear but it's not something that I actively think about or spend much time on to be honest," said Konta.

"I'm still in this tournament, I've got my next match tomorrow and that's my main focus right now.

"I am really just trying to stay very present. I'm in China right now. We'll see what it's like when I go home."

Konta play Romanian top seed Simona Halep or Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in round three on Wednesday.

Former Brazil midfielder Ronaldinho has left Fluminense after spending just over two months and playing only nine games for the Rio de Janeiro club.

The 35-year-old had struggled to get match fit, failed to score a goal and produced only flashes of the talent that made him one of the world's top players when he was in his early 20s.

Fluminense said that they had agreed to part company with Ronaldinho in an "amicable manner and by mutual agreement".

Michael Carrick and Antonio Valencia were missing from the open section of training ahead of Manchester United's Champions League encounter with Wolfsburg on Wednesday, along with Ander Herrera and Marcos Rojo.

Rojo missed Saturday's win over Sunderland with a hamstring injury, but Carrick and Valencia started the 3-0 triumph at the weekend, while Herrera was an unused substitute. No explanation was given for their absence.

Youngsters Josh Harrop, James Weir and Donald Love were included in the session.

    West Brom 2-3 Everton

    Rob Gurney
    BBC WM Sport

That second half performance was so unlike a Pulis side it was barely believable.

To be on course for a 15th clean sheet and then to blow it would have had the paint peeling off the walls in the Pulis dressing room "debrief" afterwards.

The most concerning aspect of all is how James Chester is really struggling since his £8m move from Hull.

    ChesterImage source, Getty Images

He doesn't look comfortable at either right back or centre half, got out jumped by Lukaku for the first Everton goal and then allowed himself, along with Craig Dawson, to be shaken off the ball for Lukaku's winner.

It doesn't look like Gareth McAuley or Jonas Olsson will be back any time soon so there's much for Pulis to ponder defensively before visiting his old club Palace on Saturday.

    Confident Lukaku vitalpublished at 11:20

    West Brom 2-3 Everton

    Ian Kennedy
    Reporter, BBC Radio Merseyside Sport

Everton’s 3-2 win at West Brom highlighted how important a confident Romelu Lukaku can be for the Blues, and certainly sets up an intriguing Merseyside derby on Sunday.

Indeed, it could be a tale of two strikers, with Lukaku on one side and a fit again Daniel Sturridge on the other.

    Romelu LukakuImage source, Getty Images

But it’s not just about Lukaku from Everton’s point of view.

Roberto Martinez gave Gerard Deulofeu a start at the Hawthorns, and while he’s still learning, his pace and skill on the ball must be a nightmare for any full back.

The Blues are up to fifth, have lost only one league game (to Manchester City!) and with more strength in depth, might just be readjusting their targets for the rest of the season.
