    'No change' on transfer committee

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Liverpool's much-criticised "transfer committee" has been the subject of much debate since the sacking of Brendan Rodgers.

It is the group that plots and carries out transfer strategy and up until Sunday night consisted of Rodgers, scouts Dave Fallows and Barry Hunter, the man in charge of analysis Michael Edwards, FSG's Anfield representative Mike Gordon and chief executive Ian Ayre.

I understand that the new manager WILL work within the existing structure because one of the big reasons for making the change was that owners FSG firmly believe someone else can get better results with the existing players and within the existing structure. In other words they believe it is a squad that can and will perform better under someone other than Brendan Rodgers.

Ireland hopeful about Paynepublished at 12:46

    Rugby World Cup

Ireland should know on Tuesday whether centre Jared Payne will be fit to play in their World Cup Pool D decider against France on Sunday.

Payne missed Sunday's narrow 16-9 win over Italy with a foot problem which saw Ireland through to the quarter-finals and the Irish medical team has put his foot in a moon boot as part of the treatment.

"The next 24 hours will give us a clearer picture of Jared's situation," said team manager Mick Kearney.

"But we would be very hopeful he will be okay later in the week. "He's in and out of the moon boot all day, and he's already been jogging in training,"

Eugenie Bouchard retired in tears and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga suffered dizzy spells before suffering his worst defeat of the year in an incident-packed China Open first round.

Bouchard has not played since she was concussed in a locker-room fall at the US Open and she lasted just 10 games against Andrea Petkovic before having her blood pressure checked and exiting in Beijing.

Earlier, Tsonga declined to blame Beijing's air pollution as he was hit by dizzy spells before falling at the first hurdle 7-6 (7/4), 6-2 to little-known Austrian Andreas Haider-Maurer.

Tsonga took a time-out during the match after staggering on court, and was given medication as well as having his heartbeat checked.
