When have you been the beneficiary of a sports star's generosity?

Jason Gosling: QPR used to train opposite my house back in the 80s so I used to watch them and get their autographs. One day I followed the team to the lunch room and striker Gary Bannister gave me some key rings and other souvenirs and got me a bowl of soup. All while wearing my Liverpool tracksuit.

'We are better than that'published at 17:00

    Football

What does Aston Villa chairman Randy Lerner think?

"Remi came with ideas, honesty, humour and a steely sense of what it will take for Aston Villa to be what it is meant to be - hard working, tireless, creative and unwilling to concede.

"Nobody at Villa can deny that we are way behind. We recruited aggressively this past summer and it is our responsibility to now harvest this talent rather than buckle under pressure and criticism - we are better than that. On behalf of the board we wish Remi every success."

Villa are currently rock bottom of the Premier League table. The only way is up, Remi.

During Christmas 2013, Leicester City were linked with a player by Nabil Djellit of France Football. It backed up some whispers I’d heard around the club and, sure enough, Riyad Mahrez arrived the following month.

The attacker's rise since then has been astronomical. Promotion, international call up, World Cup and now on the long list for African Player of the Year.

And now the same journalist is now reporting, external that Manchester United and Paris St Germain are interested in the Premier League’s second top goalscorer.

Although the club may not need to sell, it’s not always in their hands. It could be a bumpy January for Foxes fans.

"Now we are the best defenders of the Premier League, you say we cannot attack and it's not true. It's only a moment in a process. It's a bad period when you don't score. Football is scoring goals."

Louis van Gaal begins by talking about Manchester United winger Memphis Depay, who has had a difficult time with his club recently and has now been left out of the Netherlands side.

"I have said he is the greatest talent of his age but he is only 21 and you cannot expect consistency," said the manager.

"He is at a stage of his career where he must adapt to many things. I'm convinced he's coming back maybe stronger than before but we have to give him time, like we will with Anthony Martial when he is a little bit lower in his shape."
