Talking about his departure from Bath, Sam Burgess says: "I wanted to go in and see the team, to get my point across, but Stuart Hooper, our captain, said he didn’t think I’d be well received there, which was fair enough — if that’s how he felt.

"I wanted to go and say goodbye, not just as a team-mate but as a friend, but that didn’t happen. I’ve not been back in there, but I’ve spoken to guys away from the club."

Burgess speaks up for the RFU - who he said had not treated him badly - says he is proud of how he performed at the World Cup, and spoke up for England coach Stuart Lancaster, who he described as a great bloke.

"I learned a lot from him," says Burgess.

Sam Burgess: Why I'm going back to Leaguepublished at 08:59

    Rugby Union/League

Sam Burgess, the man at the centre of one hell of a spotlight over the last couple of months, has finally had his say on the World Cup and switching back to rugby league.

    gImage source, Getty Images

Writing in theDaily Mail,, externalit's not particularly explosive stuff - turns out he just prefers rugby league - but it is a fascinating read.

"Everyone is saying I’ve taken the easy option but it would have been easier to stay and play on in union," he said. "I could have just kept playing at six for Bath, but I believe it would have taken about 18 months for me to break into the England team in that position — and my contract is up in about 18 months.

"In sport we have a very limited window in which to compete at the top level and I didn’t want to see those 18 months go by without the same excitement and enthusiasm as the previous 12."

Jos Buttler appears set to keep wicket for England against Pakistan in the first one-day international, after recovering from a finger injury.

Buttler hurt the ring finger on his right hand and gave up his wicketkeeping duties earlier than planned to his limited-overs deputy Jonny Bairstow in England's warm-up victory over Hong Kong on Sunday.

But on the eve of Wednesday's first match of four, at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium, he was able to take part in drills and England's medical staff are confident he will be fit to start the series.

Premier League top scorer Jamie Vardy has been - perhaps not surprisingly - named October's player of the month after five goals in four games for Leicester.

The England striker has 12 goals in as many league games this season and has scored in each of his last nine matches, helping the Foxes into third place.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger won the manager of the month award after four wins out of four, as the Gunners rose to second in the table. It is Wenger's 15th monthly award.

As well as a bad day for athletics, it's a bad day for David Moyes too - back in England and looking for a new job after being given the boot by La Liga side Real Sociedad.

The 52-year-old steered the Basque team to 12th spot last season after taking charge on 10 November 2014.

But Sociedad are hovering just above the relegation zone this term and Friday's 2-0 defeat at Las Palmas - which sealed Moyes' fate - was their fourth in five league games.

Former Barcelona assistant coach Eusebio Sacristan has been named as Moyes' replacement, arriving on a deal that runs until June 2017.

    Wada Commission fall-out

Before we leave the subject of athletics for a while, may we be so bold as to recommend this piece by the BBC's chief sports writer Tom Fordyce.

    DCImage source, AFP

It begins: "Perhaps the only real surprise in new Bond film Spectre is that the eponymous immoral organisation has not branched into sports administration.

"Sport matters because it has the potential to do what very little else in the world can: uniting communities, stirring the soul, strengthening the body, building bonds between disparate nations, offering individuals identity and an escape. But sport is not getting the governance it deserves."

Trust me, it's a fascinating read.

So then, where do we start with all this athletics scandal?

Well you could do worse than reading this article, which sums up everything in a fairly easy-to-understand way (or as easy-to-understand as this huge story ever will be).

A "betrayal", a "destruction of public faith" and a "dark day" for athletics is how leading figures responded to the World Anti-Doping Agency commission report.

It has recommended Russia should be banned from competition - including from next year's Olympics in Rio.
