Steve Lomas has told BBC Radio 5 live that he believes Manchester City can get a positive result away to Dynamo Kiev in their Champions League last 16 first leg tie in under three hours.

“It’ll be a tough game," says the former City midfielder. "The ban on fans has been lifted so it will be a partisan crowd but I think City will certainly be looking to get an away goal. 

"They would take a draw going back to the Etihad but there will never be a greater opportunity for them to progress. I think they’ve just got enough to do it."

Tom Daley tells me he believes Rio 2016 could be British diving’s best ever Olympics.

The team followed up last year’s record-breaking World Championships by securing 11 of 12 possible places at the Games through this month’s Rio World Cup.

“The most we’ve ever won is one medal at an Olympics, but now there is so much strength and it’s the strongest team we’ve ever had,” he tells BBC Sport.

“We can definitely win medals and it’s really exciting because there is potential in every single event.”

London Irish backs coach Clark Laidlaw says the attitude of Premiership clubs towards away games is in stark contrast to what he encountered in southern hemisphere Super Rugby.

"I came from a competition where away games are at the other side of the world and we didn't really change tack about we approached a game," said the Scot, who was previously part of the coaching staff at New Zealand's Wellington Hurricanes.

"There is almost a French mentality here that, when you go away from home it becomes more difficult."

England forwards coach Steve Borthwick told BBC Radio 5 live: "Ireland are a good side and they’ve got good players and are a very well coached side. 

"We do the analysis on the opposition but the focus is very definitely upon our game, what we are trying to achieve.

"We have made progress, our set piece, our scrum certainly improved from Scotland to Italy, our line-out started strong in Scotland but wasn’t as strong as it could have been in Rome so we need to make sure our set piece is strong because it is going to be tested this weekend. 

"But the attitude the boys have brought has been first class. We know we have got areas to work on and develop."

Former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho says he "misses" football, but despite all the rumours regarding his future he is still waiting for the "right move".

Top professional boxers will become eligible to compete in this summer's Rio Olympics under new proposals being pushed through by the sport's world governing body, AIBA. 

Its president, Dr Ching-Kuo Wu, has indicated that the last remaining barriers preventing full-time professionals competing in the Games are set to be abolished within a matter of months. 

"We want the best boxers to come to the Olympic Games. It is AIBA's 70th birthday, and we want something to change - not after four years, but now."

His use of a risque word - horny - to describe how Manchester United must combat Midtjylland in the Europa League tomorrow had Juan Mata shuffling in his seat and will set the sub-editors to work on some imaginative headlines for Thursday's papers.

More importantly, Van Gaal admitted for the first time the immense criticism of him might be affecting his players.

Try as he might to highlight the strengths of United's Danish opponents, if they fail to overcome a 2-1 first leg deficit at Old Trafford, the criticism that has been so fierce since just before Christmas will cranked up another notch.

A new pitch will be laid at Hampden Park ahead of next month's Scottish League Cup final.

Concerns had been expressed over the state of the surface following an unusually wet winter. 

The work will start immediately after the League Two clash between Queen's Park and Berwick on 5 March and will be ready for the Cup game between Hibernian and Ross County on 13 March.

Former Manchester City midfielder Steve Lomas has told BBC Radio 5 live that Manuel Pellegrini's side will never have a better opportunity to advance in the Champions League when they face Dynamo Kiev in the first leg of their last 16 tie on Wednesday night.

"What’s key for Man City, not just for this game but to the end of the season, is that the five senior players; Zabaleta, Kompany, Yaya, Silva and Aguero, all stay fit and perform," he said. 

"They’re the leadership of the club and they’ve had a lot of injury problems.

"Mangala and Otamendi have both struggled and without Vincent Kompany’s leadership they’ve had to go back to Demichelis – who at the start of the season would have only been looking at playing five or 10 games."

Wasps' 23-year-old centre Elliot Daly has been included in the matchday squad for the first time for England's Six Nations game against Ireland on Saturday and is set to make his international debut off the bench.

Full-back Mike Brown says he has been impressed with Daly's attitude in camp. 

"He's come in full of energy, he's a great lad on and off the field," Brown told BBC Radio 5 live.

"He's been a brilliant player in the Premiership, so it will be interesting to see how he makes the next step up.

"It's always exciting to see these young lads coming through, but for me it's about setting a good example on and off the field in the way I train and play."

Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata was asked how hard it is to win the Europa League.

"It is a lot of games," he said. I have won it [with Chelsea]. I am very proud of it. 

"It [tiredness] is not an issue. It was not that season when we won it. I played more games than ever and felt good. The passion is bigger than tiredness in your legs. That is not an issue at all."

Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata: "The only thing I have in my mind is to perform as well as I can. 

"My only idea is to win. We need to play better than we did last week. We need to adapt. It is not about what I say or write.

"The fans want players to win and feel happy with trophies. Hopefully we can lift the trophy. It has a double meaning. The first time for the club and also win the Europa League to qualify for the Champions League."

On criticism, he said: "No-one knows how I played last week better than myself. I am not bothered. I was very sad and frustrated because of the result and the fans. Not with the criticism.

"We play. We want the best for the club and supporters. We feel their frustration because it is our frustration. I will always try my best. That is my duty."

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal on how the criticism of him is affecting the team: "Maybe it can be an influence. There is a lot of criticism. They have to use their tools to ignore it. You have to prepare yourself properly. It should not be an influencing subject."

On whether opponents will be more motivated because they are playing at Old Trafford: "I was not a great player but I was always at my best in a full stadium. Coming to Old Trafford is the match of their lives. Top teams have to cope with that."

Asked whether United have to show desire and hunger to combat that, he said: "They are good words. Desire, hungry."

According to Sky Sports,, external Memphis Depay has highlighted the 'inspirational' mentoring of Ryan Giggs as a key factor in his continued development at Manchester United. 

"Ryan Giggs is a legend," Depay said. "He talks a lot with me and gives me advice to equip me. He has experienced everything already so he helps with all kinds of things, he works a lot with me."
