    Leeds Rhinos head coach Brian McDermott will take charge of the United States at the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.

    McDermott first took on the post with the USA Hawks last July, sealing qualification for the tournament with wins against Jamaica and Canada.

    The 46-year-old has become one of the most successful coaches in Super League, with three titles and two Challenge Cup wins as Leeds boss.

    "I'm very pleased to have been invited to continue my role," he said.

    Bundesliga side Wolfsburg are to decide whether to terminate the contract of striker Nicklas Bendtner after being banished from first team training following disciplinary issues.

    Ex-Arsenal striker Bendtner, 28, has played just four times for the club this season, scoring two goals.

    Sporting director Klaus Allofs said: "The current situation is dissatisfying for everyone and can't continue on a permanent basis.

    “For that reason we sat down again on Wednesday with our advisers and discussed possible solutions.”

    Good news Southampton fans - your team can still win the title this year, well according to Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino.

    Leicester are five points ahead of Tottenham, who in turn have six points more than Arsenal, with Southampton seventh, 19 points behind Leicester.

    "It is not only between us and Leicester or us, Leicester and Arsenal," says Pochettino. "Manchester City, Manchester United, West Ham and Southampton still have the possibility, mathematically.

    "I'm not a politician. I'm realistic as in football anything can happen. We believe we can win the title but other teams have the possibility to fight with us."

    Fernando Alonso has just been speaking about being ruled out of this weekend’s Bahrain Grand Prix with a chest injury.

    "When you come here and you cannot even try it is always sad but it is understandable,” he said. “I respect the decision, I tried until the last moment to race. I was ready to go through this pain somehow in the car and make sure I could race, the pain is manageable at the end of the day.

    "There are some other risks the doctors think, it is risk management and to minimise that is the logical thing."

    As for the Chinese GP in a fortnight, Alonso added: "I am not 100% so there will be another test I need to do in eight or 10 days, after that the FIA will evaluate again."

    Championship promotion hopefuls Burnley returned a profit of £30.1m, a club record, during their 2014-15 stint in the Premier League.

    The Clarets, who were relegated at the end of the season, had posted a £7.6m pre-tax loss the previous campaign.

    These figures do not include compensation from Liverpool for striker Danny Ings, who left last summer.

    Chairman Mike Garlick said the income allowed the club to clear debts and fund new developments.

    Wales' women's national football team have to wear men's shirts, striker Helen Ward has revealed.

    Ward, 29, said women's cut shirts are supplied for her club Reading but is disappointed the national women's side have to play in men's shirts.

    "We'll wear what we're given, but it is nice to be wearing a kit that fits and cut the right way," Ward told BBC Radio Wales' Jason Mohammad programme.

    "It's really disappointing because a lot of shirts come in women's sizes."
