The winner of the 2014 FIFA World Player of the Year Award, Germany captain Nadine Kessler, has been forced to retire at the age of 28 because of a recurring knee injury.
The Wolfsburg midfielder had been sidelined since September 2014.
Widely recognised as one of the best players in the world within the women's game, Kessler helped Germany to the UEFA Women's Euro 2013 title and captained Wolfsburg to back-to-back Champions League crowns.

"I've been working out a lot in the gym," says Ben Proud.
The Plymouth-based 19-year-old eased into Thursday's 100m freestyle final in 48.68, but is expected to drop around a second later and post a time nearing the best in the world.
This could be a huge break-through year for Proud and definitely one-to-watch leading into Rio and beyond. The long-awaited heir to Mark Foster.

West Brom v Watford (Sat, 15:00 BST)
Manager Quique Sanchez Flores is having to think very carefully about team selection, ahead of a spell that includes a midweek meeting with West Ham and next weekend's FA Cup semi final against Crystal Palace.
“I think it’s the first time during the season we have to think seriously in two matches – against West Brom and West Ham,” said Flores. “I don’t like to mix but in terms of choosing players we need to think about it.
"We will try to show players every single player has a good opportunity [to play at Wembley]. You ask the players what do you prefer to play at Wembley or West Brom? Everyone would want to say Wembley but we say the most important match is the next one.”
West Brom v Watford (Sat, 15:00 BST)
Quique Sanchez Flores believes lessons can be learned from Diego Simeone and his Atletico Madrid side, who beat Barcelona to reach the Champions League semi-finals.
Flores is a big admirer of the mentality shown by the supposedly inferior Atletico players...
“It’s difficult [for us] to compare because we are talking different levels but in this moment we are building a team,” said Flores. “Simeone has been building for five years.
"In terms of the system and the tactics it’s very clear what we want. We want to be an organised team. It takes time but we are in a good way."

Manager Quique Sanchez Flores was in typically relaxed mood when discussing reports about his contract and whether he had spoken to the club about extending his deal which has another season to run.
Judging by his comments, he isn’t going anywhere...
“Inside the club we are relaxed about this,” said the Spaniard. “I have no worry about my future, I am really happy at Watford. I feel good. When I feel good everything is OK.
"The contract is one thing and the feelings is another. For me and the way I talk to the owner and players about next season it’s clear."

Andy Murray speaking to Sky Sports after his 2-6 7-5 7-5 win over Benoit Paire: "He played extremely well and I was a little slow. It was the first time that I had played him. He has a difficult game to work out. He comes forward a lot, he is a fantastic athlete, lots of drop shots and a fabulous backhand.
"Maybe today was a little lucky, but i was potentially a little unlucky in the last couple of tournaments. I was not where I want to be. But now I have the chance to get better."

Scratchy.
But Andy Murray has the win and that is what counts.
The world number two is into the fourth round of the Monte Carlo Masters despite Benoit Paire serving for the match in both the second and third sets.
Murray's first serve percentage was well down at 58% but he wins 2-6 7-5 7-5 and will face Canada's Milos Raonic next.

Andy Murray lives to fight another day. Again.
Benoit Paire was serving for the match at 5-4 in the third, but the French world number 22 double-faults on break point to hand Murray a way back into the match.
Murray is bidding to win back-to-back matches on the ATP Tour for the first time since the birth of his daughter in February.

Ewan Lawrie, take a bow...
29 May 1968
I've got it in my pocket, the power of the pea, and the strong lungs of someone who almost made it once.
I look at George and Bobby as unlike as any peas should ever be, their blue shirts won't frighten the Portuguese.
It's cold here in London, not like Sicily has ever been. A short man is blinking, behind a tall green jersey.
I wink at Aurelio and Franco, the ball is heavy in my hand. We stride out, to the sound of 92,000
The metal tastes cold on my lips, the moment is now; who will know the name of the man in the middle, afterward?
