Everton have abandoned plans for a new stadium at Walton Hall Park but have identified two possible alternative sites within the Liverpool boundary.
The Toffees have been working with Liverpool City Council to find a replacement for Goodison Park, where they have played since 1892.
Everton chief executive Robert Elstone said the plan was at "an early stage".
He hoped the new sites would provide a "more straightforward, deliverable opportunity" to build a new stadium.

Grant McCann has been named Peterborough United manager on a four-year deal.
The 36-year-old had been in caretaker charge following Graham Westley's departure on 23 April.

Serena Williams beat Madison Keys in straight sets to win the Italian Open - her first WTA title in nine months.
The world number one beat her fellow American 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 to triumph in Rome for the fourth time since 2002.
Williams, 34, last won a title in Cincinnati in August, and has since lost finals at the US Open, Australian Open and Indian Wells.
She will begin the defence of her French Open title when the tournament gets under way on Sunday.
Let's step away from the England squad for just a few moments to wrap up some other sporting nuggets from the last 24 hours...

Lewis Cooke: "I think it's a decent squad but Wilshere with only 3 app this season in there is criminal!"
Daniel Durham: "Generally happy with the 26. Would have had a look at Antonio over Delph. Dier, Kane and Alli must start. Buzzing for June 11th."
Michael Gibaut: "Hodgson has significantly taken all the optimism away from this country for the euros with that squad."

England manager Roy Hodgson: "I don't consult with Wayne Rooney over selection, that would not be correct. His responsibility is as a player, then captain. I am not certain I want him involved in who I should pick.
"Myself, Ray Lewington and Gary Neville watch so much football it is not necessary to bring in a fourth man."

England manager Roy Hodgson: "I have been asked that question so many times. I believe in the squad, I think they will do well. I have a contract until after the tournament so we will see what happens then."

What a season it has been for this man...
England Euro 2016 squad
England manager Roy Hodgson on the Old Trafford terror alert: "No it doesn’t affect my thinking, it was an unfortunate incident and it’s being dealt with.
"It’s good to know the right people are dealing with it. The bomb itself didn't turn out to be one. The public and secretary did a great job. When we go to France we will hope the security is as tight.
"We have a full time security officer and a few part time staff. We will have Uefa to talk to us about security so we’ll be well prepared in that respect. We will have done everything we can give. And we hope the tournament goes across quietly in terms on security and it’ll be remembered for the football."
England Euro 2016 squad
England manager Roy Hodgson: "The squad has developed and has been put together over time. It is not the same as the one that started in qualifying. A lot of the players formed something together two years ago and since then Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy and Danny Drinkwater have come through.
"We have cut the young players some slack and they have responded well to it. Now there is more focus and attention on them and if you can produce your form, that's when recognition will come."
England Euro 2016 squad
England manager Roy Hodgson on hopes going into the tournament: "I would like to think that this squad, with the youth it contains and relative lack of experience in terms of caps, will have a long future. I'd like to think of it as a bit of a start in some respects. Whenever you go into a tournament you have got to have desire and hope you are going to win it. It has happened in the past, no one expected Denmark in 92, no one expect Greece to win a Euros as well, no one has expected Leicester to win the Premier League. Everyone has got to have that hope, that dream, that thought in their minds. Who knows if we really play well and produce our best, who knows where it will lead us.
"To make predictions, I don’t honestly think you will get any football manager doing that. We have to concentrate simply on the one thing we can control. That is the selection of the team, the preparation of the team and the faith we try and show in the team.
"Sometimes the private messages are slightly different. The private messages are very important for players because they really need to know that the people they are working with believe in them and think they have a chance."
