No pressure to select Rooneypublished at 11:26 British Summer Time 16 May 2016

    England Euro 2016 squad

England manager Roy Hodgson: "Wayne Rooney is the captain and has done a fantastic job. 109 games and 51 goals and there are not many players in Europe who will reach that success. We are very grateful for the goals he has cored for us in qualifying.

"I have to select teams against Turkey, Portugal and Australia. Rooney is an important player but the is not demanding to play in the opening game. I am under no pressure to select him.

On Marcus Rashford: "What Ryan Giggs says publicly and privately may be different. We have had good feedback from Manchester United on the player. We have a good group of forward players and plenty of players who can be in the front positions. If he continues to develop, there is no reason why he cannot become a regular in the England team."

Early reaction - and with no West Ham players in the squad, Hammers fans aren't too happy.

Elliot Leaver: "Mark Noble becoming a shout for best player to never play for England. How he isn't in the squad and Rashford is is beyond me."

Stuart: "Shocking by Roy - Antonio deserved a call & Cresswell at LB. So much for picking form players."

Happy to see Henderson backpublished at 11:20 British Summer Time 16 May 2016

    England Euro 2016 squad

England manager Roy Hodgson on players returning from injury: "The most important thing is, I don’t want to name people, including in the preparation squad, who are not fit and we would have to sweat on their fitness. I want players who are actually fit, if they haven’t played enough games it does not matter.

"You always have players who you want to have had a few more games, but also you want some players to have played less. I was happy to see Jordan [Henderson] back and these three matches can help with fitness."

    England Euro 2016 squad

England manager Roy Hodgson: "All you can do is prepare the team for what comes along and you have seen with Leicester this season and people asked when will they crack? Can they win the league? They prepared hard and were capable of winning every game. We have to make our preparation good and players have to feel they have a genuine chance of winning the game.

"I appreciate the support from the public over the last couple of years but I should remind them that the squad is still young and not having much experience."

'Tough conversations were had'published at 11:15 British Summer Time 16 May 2016

    England Euro 2016 squad

England manager Roy Hodgson: "The extra cover we have given ourselves will be finished with by the time we play Australia. I would like to tell the 23 then who will be on the plane to France.

"Leighton Baines has not played for us for over a year but Danny Rose and Ryan Bertrand has been filling in. Michael Carrick has played regularly for us but has been unfortunate with injuries. I spoke to them and Theo Walcott but you have to make a decision. It was a tough conversation but you have to do that as a coach.

"Walcott and Andros Townsend are not similar players. Townsend was unlucky to lose his place in the squad but since he has gone to Newcastle he has done very well. Walcott has not had regular games."

'Rashford has a great future'published at 11:11 British Summer Time 16 May 2016

    England Euro 2016 squad

England manager Roy Hodgson: "When we were thinking how many players were wanted, there was uncertainty over Jack Wilshere and Jordan Henderson, both are medically fit and it was better to add players to the squad. I am making life harder for myself by naming 26 which has to be reduced to 23.

"Danny Welbeck's injury did disrupt my plan because it is about balancing the team. We had a very good qualification campaign and you don;t want to lose players from it. We will miss the options he gives us.

"Marcus Rashford is one of the contenders. Competition is strong and he deserves to be selected for the main squad but I am pleased someone who has had an outstanding end to the season has a great future. He will have the chance to knock someone off their perch."

Ronny Deila's last game as Celtic manager ended in an annihilation of a bewildered Motherwell in Glasgow.

The slick champions scored three in the first half through Kieran Tierney - his first for the club - Tom Rogic and Mikael Lustig.

They got another four in the second from Stuart Armstrong, Patrick Roberts, Ryan Christie and, remarkably, from their substitute, Jack Aitchison.

At 16 years and 71 days, Aitchison is Celtic's youngest-ever debutant.

Former rugby league star Jarryd Hayne has quit the NFL after just one season to play rugby sevens for Fiji in this year's Rio Olympics.

Hayne played in Australia's National Rugby League from 2006-14 before joining the San Francisco 49ers.

"The Olympics has been something I have admired since I was a little boy, and it is an opportunity I feel similar to me joining the NFL," said Hayne, 28.

"The Fiji sevens team reached out to me. I could not pass that chance up."

Terry, 35, is out of contract at the end of this season and in January said he would not be extending his stay.

"We all want the same thing," said Terry in response to fans chanting "John Terry, we want you to stay".

Tom Daley secured the third individual 10m European diving gold of his career with a stunning performance in London.

Daley, who won mixed 3m synchronised gold and men's 10m synchro silver earlier in the week, was in second after two of six rounds at the European Aquatics Championships.

However, he then powered past Russia's Viktor Minibaev, who won silver.

"Winning feels great, but I feel in the best place ever which is a huge boost ahead of Rio," he told BBC Sport.
