Sunderland release short statementpublished at 15:49 British Summer Time 22 July 2016

    Football

Sunderland have just released a statement. No mentions of "best wishes for the future" or "thanks for all his hard work" - they must be pretty angry!

"Sunderland AFC confirms the departure of Sam Allardyce, who takes up the position of England manager with immediate effect.

"The focus of everyone at Sunderland AFC now is on moving forward quickly and decisively, with the appointment of the club’s new manager to be confirmed at the earliest opportunity."

'Dortmund at advanced stage'published at 15:44 British Summer Time 22 July 2016

    Man Utd 1-4 Dortmund

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho, speaking after their 4-1 friendly defeat by Borussia Dortmund: "My thoughts are simple.

"I know in pre-season the team in the advance stage of preparation looks better. It happens year after year. It was too obvious. We knew after 10 minutes that one team started training a month ago and played four games.

"In the second half it was better. I think 3-2 was more natural than 4-1. They showed good quality and at an advanced stage."

The answers, from @QuestionofSport, are Ian Bell, Jos Buttler, Chris Jordan and Sam Robson.

There's just over 30km to go in today's Tour de France stage 19...

Pierre Rolland was perhaps the best chance of a French rider winning a first stage of this year's Tour. His lycra has been ripped to shreds after a slide across the tarmac which must have been 20 feet.

He looks OK, though, and will be caught by the peloton shortly. Rui Costa is out in front on his own with the peloton one minute 50 seconds behind.

Chris Froome is fine and back at the head of the peloton.

You can follow the stage as it unfolds here.

It's only pre-season and some of Manchester United's players have not even started training yet but losing 4-1 to Borussia Dortmund is still a bit of a shocker.

Jose Mourinho's side did improve after a poor first-half - and new signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan added a goal to a decent performance, but clearly United have a lot of work to do.

Ahead of tomorrow's IPC Athletics Grand Prix, American amputee sprinter Jarryd Wallace tells BBC World Service's Ed Harry he wants to put on a show when he takes on Paralympic champion Jonnie Peacock in the T44 100m.

"My last 10 races have been under 11 seconds so I'm running consistently and running well," he said.

"I'm confident in where I am and where my coach has me."

Full time: Man Utd 1-4 Dortmundpublished at 15:08 British Summer Time 22 July 2016

That's it, a comfortable win for Dortmund thanks to Gonzalo Castro's double, a superb solo goal from Ousmane Dembele and one from the spot for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan did briefly bring United back into contention after Juan Mata unselfishly dummied the goalkeeper before teeing up his new team-mate, but Jose Mourinho's side looked second best for long spells in the Shanghai heat.

Some good footwork from Marcus Rashford sees the England teenager produce United's best chance in a while.

He turns one way and then the other in an attempt to shake off the Dortmund defence having charged forward from half way, only to be crowded out and watch his heavy touch end up in Roman Weidenfeller's arms.

    Man Utd 1-4 Dortmund

Gonzalo Castro, scorer of Dortmund's opener, finds space on the edge of the United box and lashes a right-footed strike across Romero into the opposite corner with four minutes remaining.

Castro had fired over from a free kick from a similar distance moments earlier after Eric Bailly, perhaps fortunate not to have been shown a second yellow card, brought down Emre Mor in full flight.

Doesn't look like there is any way back for United in this one.

Dortmund go close through Christian Pulisic, with the 17-year-old USA international firing wide of Romero's right post from just outside the D after United failed to clear.

Luke Shaw then halts a Dortmund breakaway but it's team-mate Eric Bailly who finds himself in the book after booting the ball away.

Belgium-born Brazil Under-23 international Andreas Pereira comes on in place of Ecuadorian Antonio Valencia for Manchester United.

There's just over 10 minutes left to play in Shanghai and the players are having another drinks break. United have opted for iced towels to cool their troops down.

Chance for Dortmund from a corner. Nuri Sahin rises highest at the front post to attack an in-swinging ball but the Turkey international watches his header deflect narrowly wide of a United defender.

That means a second chance for the German side from a set piece, but a similar corner is gathered this time by goalkeeper Sergio Romero at full stretch.
