"What he would go on to help us achieve, in the time we have achieved it, has been beyond anything we could have anticipated.

“Claudio’s qualities, both as a man and as a coach, have been very clear since the moment he arrived – qualities that have helped Leicester City to progress on every level."

Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri had two years left to run on the contract he signed last summer.

The 64-year-old led the Foxes to their first top-flight title last season in one of sport's all-time shocks.

“From the moment I talked to the owners about their vision for Leicester City, I knew it was something I wanted to be part of for a long time," the Italian said.

"The energy that exists at this club – from the owners and the staff, to the players and supporters – is something very special. I am very happy and proud that I will be part of it for years to come."

Born in September 2000, he is the youngest first-team player in the club's history. The Wales Under-17 international was only able to play because it is the school holidays.

"The biggest compliment I can give him is he plays like a 35-year-old," boss Paul Tisdale told BBC Radio Devon.

A common theme today is that Manchester United's signing of Paul Pogba marks a new era, where all the top stars don't automatically go to Barcelona and Real Madrid any more.

Yesterday saw Manchester United and City pay record transfer fees. United's £89m capture of Paul Pogba beat the world record, and John Stones to City at £47.5m was higher than the initial fee for any other English player (Raheem Sterling's £44m could rise to £49m).

Today Swansea could break their club record by signing Atletico Madrid striker Borja Baston for a reported £15m, and Everton are set to sign Ashley Williams.

There is only one place to keep on top of all of today's transfer news and rumours - and that's BBC Sportsday.
