Manchester United v Southampton (20:00 BST)

    Mark Lawrenson
    BBC football expert

Southampton have won 1-0 on their last two trips to Old Trafford, but I do not see them making it three in a row.

With Paul Pogba set to make his debut, this United team already feels different to when Louis van Gaal was manager and, at the moment, Saints are not the same side they were either.

    Prediction: 2-0

  4. Revenge on the menu?published at 16:42 British Summer Time 19 August 2016

Brazil v Germany (Sat, 21:30 BST)

The Olympic final between Brazil and Germany on Saturday should be pretty tasty. The Maracana will be packed to the rafters for a repeat of the 2014 World Cup semi-final.

Sure the Brazilians out there won't need reminding about that 7-1 defeat...

But coach Rogerio Micale has been trying to play down its importance.

"That was the World Cup. This is the Olympic team. Neymar never played in that match so there is nothing that could generate any type of feeling that we have to take revenge," he said.

"It is a different time with different players. I am sure the final with Germany will be a great match but it has nothing to do with the past."

    Yeah...

Manchester United v Southampton (20:00 BST)

Manchester United have £89m signing Paul Pogba available after he served a suspension carried over from his time at previous club Juventus.

Defender Chris Smalling is also back following a ban, while Jesse Lingard has recovered from a foot injury.

Southampton captain Jose Fonte, who has been linked with United, could feature despite missing their opener because of a late start to pre-season.

Ryan Bertrand remains injured so Matt Targett will continue at left-back.

  8. Man Utd's Pereira set for loanpublished at 16:21 British Summer Time 19 August 2016

    BBC Sport

Four clubs have expressed an interest in taking Manchester United forward Andreas Pereira on loan.

United manager Jose Mourinho wants the Brazilian to further his career away from Old Trafford.

Mourinho will have the final decision over where Pereira goes and there are options both in England and overseas.

Pereira, 20, has a contract that runs to 2018.

He has made 13 senior appearances for United, scoring one goal, in the League Cup against Ipswich last season.

  10. Uefa charges Celtic over Palestine flagspublished at 16:14 British Summer Time 19 August 2016

Uefa has opened disciplinary proceedings against Celtic after supporters displayed Palestine flags during their Champions League qualifier against Israeli side Hapoel Be'er Sheva.

European football's governing body said the charges related to the presence of an "illicit banner" with the case to be dealt with on 22 September.

Brendan Rodgers' Celtic side won the first leg of the play-off to reach the group stage 5-2.

  12. Pogba unleashed at Old Trafford?published at 16:05 British Summer Time 19 August 2016

Manchester United v Southampton (20:00 BST)

    Steve Wilson
    Match of the Day

It has been 20 years since anyone with the tag of 'the world's most expensive player' was at an English club - back then Newcastle had beaten Manchester United to the signature of Alan Shearer.

Whether Jose Mourinho will unleash Paul Pogba from the start remains to be seen. Pogba has had only the briefest of pre-seasons after France's Euro 2016 campaign, but his mere presence is a signal of United's intent.

Mourinho's competitive home debut as United boss comes against a Southampton side who have enjoyed back-to-back wins at Old Trafford over the last two seasons.

Yet again the Saints' powers of recovery will be tested by the loss of good players and a good manager. In Claude Puel, has the club continued its knack of making inspired managerial appointments, in the same way as their academy continues to produce outstanding young talent?

We shall see - but Old Trafford is probably not the place to judge.

  14. Walter Mazzarri news conferencepublished at 15:53 British Summer Time 19 August 2016

Watford v Chelsea (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Watford

And some final questions for Walter Mazzarri:

How big a test are Chelsea? And what about Conte's strengths?

"Last year was unusual for Chelsea, but they're a great team and one of the candidates for the title. We will have to stay concentrated.

"You can tell from their first game, the team is already following Conte's mentality and his way of playing. They can do great things."

  15. Walter Mazzarri news conferencepublished at 15:46 British Summer Time 19 August 2016

Watford v Chelsea (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Watford

Here's more from Watford boss Walter Mazzarri, who comes over all guarded when asked about his relationship with Chelsea manager Antonio Conte - a fellow Italian.

"I respect Conte as a person and as a manager. Friendship is another thing,"  Mazzarri says.

"We shook hands at the managers' meeting, we have a mutual respect, but the meaning of friendship is very different, I have just a few real friends."

  16. Michu's back...published at 15:37 British Summer Time 19 August 2016

Former Swansea striker Michu is back in the game - he's signed for Spanish second division side Real Oviedo.

It's fair to say the 30-year-old lost his way slightly after leaving the Swans - he wound up in the Spanish fourth tier with Langreo for a time.

Can he replicate the scintillating form he showed in 2012-13, when he ended his maiden Premier League campaign with 22 goals?..

  17. Walter Mazzarri news conferencepublished at 15:25

Watford v Chelsea (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Watford

Watford boss Walter Mazzarri hasn't quite got his English down yet - apparently the hope is to move on from the translator by Christmas.

He also insisted he didn't want to speak about transfers (che sorpresa) - with Roberto Pereyra and Younes Kaboul set to arrive.

Bu he is "very curious to see the atmosphere at home and how the team react" in Saturday's game against Chelsea, having drawn their opening game of the season 1-1 at Southampton last week.

  18. The 'obsession' behind Hart's City futurepublished at 15:14 British Summer Time 19 August 2016

Stoke v Man City (Sat, 12:30 BST)

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Firstly. That Pep Guardiola press conference was long. Thirty-three minutes in which he fielded questions from the broadcast and written media - and in between some from Spanish journalists as well.

Fair to say he prefers discussing systems and tactics to transfers, especially those involving high profile players he has decided not to pick.

However, Guardiola did talk at length about Joe Hart, saying he would make him a better keeper if he remained at Manchester City but also that he was "obsessive" about build-up play, in which he wants his keeper to play a significant part.

But with Barcelona's Claudio Bravo lined up as a new arrival before the 31 August transfer deadline, Hart faces the prospect of becoming Guardiola's third coach.

So, as Pep also said he wouldn't keep an unhappy player, it is fair to assume Hart will be giving his door a tap.

I have to admit, my farsi isn't what it used to be. Despite the best efforts of my local barber and a taste for Iranian food.

But I can still enjoy a picture of a football manager training his players while riding a horse, just like the next man.

The photo below is taken from a 90tv.ir, external report - it's former Bayern Munich boss Ali Daei driving his Naft Tehran players into shape.

You'll probably know Daei from his international exploits - 106 goals in 149 games for Iran. Superb stuff., external

  20. 'Nasri set for Besiktas loan'published at 14:55 British Summer Time 19 August 2016

    Latest transfer gossip

    Manchester City

According to French sports daily L'Equipe,, external Besiktas are in negotiations with Manchester City over signing Samir Nasri on loan with an option for a permanent deal.

They say Nasri is resigned to leaving City, and would be keen on the move.

The French international midfielder, 29, does appear to be on his way out of the Etihad Stadium - he wasn't even in City's Champions League squad.
