Man Utd financial figures 'exceed own expectations'published at 12:26 British Summer Time 12 September 2016

    Football

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Big figures for Manchester United, slightly exceeding their own expectations of £510m revenues for the year to 30 June 2016.

As has been the case for a number of years now, commercial income is roaring ahead, with a 36.3% increase in that sector alone to £268.3m.

To put it into context, that figure would have put United 11th in the latest Deloitte Rich List, ahead of Tottenham, both Milan clubs, Roma and Borussia Dortmund.

The only slight downer is that United cannot claim to be the first football club to generate annual revenue in excess of £500m.

That claim belongs to Barcelona, who benefited from a stronger Euro against the pound post-Brexit.

Marcus Rashford impressed once again at the weekend, influencing the Manchester derby with his pace and direct running, although he couldn't do enough to save his United side from falling to a 2-1 defeat by rivals City.

And United team-mate Zlatan Ibrahimovic thinks the 18-year-old is set for a rather special career.

"It's not like he needs to take over the world today, the club knows that, the coach knows that and the team knows that," Ibrahimovic told Sky Sports., external

"We know his quality and what he's able to do. What the world is seeing now, we already know because we see it every day.

"There is no need to rush to push him and put him in the heat zone and put a lot of pressure on him because that can have the opposite effect.

"Time by time, he will take over everything. It's about having patience."

Manchester City moved a step closer to their first Women's Super League title as a 1-0 win at Arsenal kept them seven points clear of second-placed Chelsea.

City's Scotland striker Jane Ross won the game, deflecting in England captain Steph Houghton's second-half free-kick.

Arsenal's Jordan Nobbs had been denied by a fingertip save from Karen Bardsley before half-time, but the hosts rarely went close to finding an equaliser.

Victory assures City of qualification for the Champions League for 2017-18.

City have played a game more than rivals Chelsea, but will win the title if they avoid defeat at home to the Blues on 25 September.

'Old dog' Tomlinson to leave Hants packpublished at 11:30

    Cricket

    James TomlinsonImage source, PA

Life as a seam-bowling cricketer is all fun and games when you're a young dog, leading the pack and hunting wickets.

But when the eyes start to dim and the limbs start to weaken, it can be time to call it a day and retire to the day.

Don't worry I haven't gone mad. I'm just paraphrasing retiring Hampshire man James Tomlinson.

"Although I was once both the young dog at the front and the healthy dog in the middle, I feel now is the right time to head back to the den," he said, in what former England spinner Graeme Swann has described as "the greatest retirement statement of all time".

"I now have the opportunity to do just that and look after all the young dogs coming through - a job I already love and cherish."

Tomlinson, who likened himself to an "old dog with half a leg", took 382 first-class wickets in 129 matches.

"I would most like to thank the opposition batters who somehow for over a decade missed the straight ones and nicked the half volleys... to you all I will be forever grateful," he ends.

World number one Novak Djokovic says tennis now has a 'big five' following Stan Wawrinka's US Open triumph.

Wawrinka beat Djokovic in four sets on Sunday to win his third Grand Slam.

"He plays best in the big matches and definitely deserves to be mentioned in the mix of top players," said Djokovic.

But world number three Wawrinka, who said he was crying with nerves before the final, insisted he was "really far" from the 'big four' of Djokovic, Andy Murray, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

That illustrious quartet have won 42 of the past 47 Grand Slams, though Wawrinka now has the same number of major titles as Olympic champion Murray.
