Edwards retired from international cricket in May after a 20-year career, and is the only player - man or woman - to captain England in 200 internationals.

She said of her latest role: "I've thoroughly enjoyed my time at the Ageas Bowl so far and I’m looking forward to working more closely with the club moving forward to help drive the development of cricket across Hampshire, alongside my role as captain of the Vipers."

Davis Cup 'a bonus' for Edmund & Evanspublished at 16:45

    Tennis

Great Britain's Davis Cup captain Leon Smith wants Dan Evans and Kyle Edmund to produce consistent results on tour, saying the team event is "a bonus".

Evans, 26, and 21-year-old Edmund were part of the team whose title defence was ended by a 3-2 defeat by Argentina in Glasgow at the weekend.

"The most important thing for Dan, Kyle and the others is doing a great job week in, week out," said Smith.

"Davis Cup is just two, three - in a great year, four - times a year."

Edmund and Evans have both reached career-high rankings this month.

Edmund, ranked 54th in the world, beat top-25 players Richard Gasquet and John Isner as he reached the fourth round of the US Open.

World number 56 Evans is yet to go beyond the third round of a major but held match point against eventual champion Stan Wawrinka at that stage before losing in five sets.

Compton ready for cracking weekpublished at 16:38 British Summer Time 19 September 2016

Mixed feelings for Nick Compton? The Middlesex man once played for Somerset, so this week promises to be an interesting one for him. As you'll remember, Middlesex play Yorkshire at Lord's, with Somerset the third team in contention for the County Championship title. It can go either of three ways, no question, as Somerset play Nottinghamshire at Taunton.

If you need a reminder of the points difference, it goes...

    1. Middlesex 213
    2. Yorkshire 204
    3. Somerset 203

    Ian Kennedy

Interesting listening to Jurgen Klopp – he clearly feels there’s a great quality about teams in the Championship – so there’ll be no chance of any complacency when it comes to tomorrow’s game at Derby.

Sometimes games like this can catch you out if the attitude isn’t right, but since Klopp came to the club, the results against lower-league clubs – whether in competition or friendlies – have been excellent.

Klopp will field a strong side, you can sure of that, and he’ll want to go one better than last season when they lost in the final.

Blackburn Rovers manager Owen Coyle is very keen to sign former Manchester United and Sunderland defender Wes Brown, a free agent since leaving the Stadium of Light in the summer.

Brown, 36, injured his calf during pre-season with Rovers, but has proved his fitness with the club's under-23 side and is in advanced talks with the club about a deal.

"As soon as I get the green light from the owners that I can get that over the line, I'll pursue it vigorously," Coyle said.

"Wes is fit and ready to play. We've had daily chats, he is an outstanding man and think he is in good shape to play now."

That's good but we know ourselves it's only the start of the season and we need to improve. We can improve - if we want to fight for Europe.

"We changed, we brought new players and it looks like everyone has settled down. But we need to work hard.

"There is no reason not to be happy. The fans like it, and the fans like it most when the team is winning."

Amid the issue of Jonny Bairstow's county v country (09:07 BST entry), let's not forget outgoing Yorkshire coach Jason Gillespie will be hoping to sign off with the club's third-straight County Championship title - the last time they did this was in 1968.

"I love my job here, and it’s tough to walk away from something you love. But, as I’ve said, my family are back in Australia, and it’s time to put them first."
