    Ryan Sidebottom is set to enter his 20th year as a Yorkshire player after signing a new one-year contract. He first played for the White Rose in 1997.

    Can the 38-year-old pace bowler celebrate this news later this week by helping Yorkshire to a third successive County Championship title? They play rivals Middlesex in the crunch tie to beat all crunch ties at Lord's, starting Tuesday.

    "I hope that me staying for a further year will give everyone a boost in a massive week for all connected with the club," Sidebottom said.

    "My first thought though is taking wickets. It’s a huge week for the club; we can’t draw or lose so we know what we have to do at Lord's. It’s a great opportunity to make history."

    A heads-up that a fair few managers will be facing the media this afternoon to preview their clubs' EFL Cup ties this week.

    Among them are Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp, Leicester's Claudio Ranieri and Northampton's Rob Page, whose side face Manchester United on Wednesday. All three are due up at 13:00 BST.

    Bournemouth's Eddie Howe follows at 13:30 while Everton's Ronald Koeman (15:30) should be feeling chipper with his unbeaten team second in the Premier League table.

    GB Davis Cup captain Leon Smith had nothing but pride for his team's performance despite their semi-final defeat to Argentina.

    "We've had an unbelievable run in this competition over the last couple of years," Smith said.

    "I don't think people would have mapped that out a few years ago, what the team has achieved, so I'm extremely proud of them."

    Singers, dancers and fireworks lit up the iconic Maracana Stadium as the Rio Paralympics came to a close on Sunday evening. There was also a sombre note as tributes were paid to the Iranian cyclist Bahman Golbarnezhad, who died on Saturday.

    Great Britain closed the Rio Paralympics with 64 gold medals, the most by a British team since 1988.

    Fair to say Southampton manager Claude Puel would have been relieved to get his first Premier League win in his fifth attempt. The Saints beat Swansea 1-0 at home, Charlie Austin scoring the goal in the 64th minute.

    "It is important for the future," Puel said after the game. "We have to play every few days, many games, and it is hard physically. It is important for the squad to play games and improve and make progress."

    Yorkshire have expressed "disappointment" after the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) refused their request to field Jonny Bairstow in this week's Country Championship decider.

    While a club statement, external says the wicketkeeper-batsman "wanted to play", captain Andrew Gale confirmed spinner Adil Rashid has asked to be rested.

    Yorkshire face leaders Middlesex in their final match, starting on Tuesday, while England play their first match against Bangladesh on 7 October.

    Alistair Brownlee said it was "a natural human reaction" to come to the aid of his brother Jonny, adding: "I'd have done the same thing for anyone in that position."

    He added: "I wish the flippin' idiot had paced it right and crossed the finish line first.

    "He could have jogged that last two kilometres and won the race."

    This is agonising and inspirational all at the same time...

    Exhausted Briton Jonny Brownlee needed to be helped over the finish line by brother Alistair in a dramatic end to the World Triathlon Series in Mexico.

    Leading with 700 metres left, Jonny, 26, began to weave over the road in hot and humid conditions in Cozumel.

    Third-placed Alistair, 28, caught his brother, propping him up for the final few hundred metres before pushing him over the line in second place.

    They were overtaken by South African Henri Schoeman, the eventual winner.

    Victory in Mexico would have given Jonny the world title, but second place left him just four points behind Spain's Maria Mola.

    Jonny, Olympic silver medallist at Rio 2016 and a bronze medallist at London 2012, collapsed to the ground the moment he crossed the finish line.

    He required treatment but later tweeted he was OK, with a photo of himself lying in a hospital bed on a drip.

    Alongside a picture of him weaving, he wrote:, external "Normally when you have had too much to drink. This time it was the opposite."

    Sticking with Tottenham, manager Mauricio Pocchettino is not overly concerned by his side missing a fair few chances during their 1-0 win over Sunderland.

    "Sometimes it's difficult. In the end it was fair," he said. "I want to create chances and play well - sometimes you need a lot of chances to score."

    Tottenham hope to learn the full extent of Harry Kane's ankle injury on Monday after the striker left Sunday's win over Sunderland on crutches.

    The 23-year-old striker scored the only goal of the game at White Hart Lane before twisting his ankle while tackling Papy Djilobodji late in the match.

    Just when he appeared to be back on form with two goals in two games.  

    Spurs are due to host Gillingham in the EFL Cup on Wednesday before travelling to Middlesbrough in the Premier League on Saturday.

    Walter Mazzarri's Watford had started the season with just one point in three games - including two defeats - but have now bounced back in great style, first beating West Ham 4-2 and then turning over Manchester United.

    "It is a very important three points to give my players the confidence to go ahead," Mazzarri said after Sunday's game. "I don't look too much at results but how we play. We have been improving dramatically."

    As to his meeting with Mourinho, the Italian said: "We spoke before the game - even one day next week we can go out for dinner."
