Well, they may only have been a year out, as the Cubs and their fans have been celebrating after they beat the Los Angeles Dodgers to reach the World Series for the first time since 1945.

Wenger future on Arsenal AGM agenda?published at 11:30 British Summer Time 24 October 2016

    Football

    David Ornstein
    BBC Sport

    Arsenal AGMImage source, BBC Sport

The scene is set for Arsenal's annual general meeting, a yearly chance for the remaining minority shareholders to hear from and question the club's hierarchy.

The first thing to mention is number of seats in the room here at the Emirates Stadium - there are fewer and fewer each year as majority shareholder Stan Kroenke and the second-largest shareholder Alisher Usmanov gradually increase their stakes.

Kroenke will be on the top table, though we never know how much he will speak. His son Josh may be there too, alongside chairman Sir Chips Keswick, chief executive Ivan Gazidis and manager Arsene Wenger.

This is expected to be a far calmer AGM than many predecessors because Arsenal have started the season well and finally look capable of mounting a credible title challenge. They also spent more than £90m on new players in the summer transfer window and have not made a controversial £3m payment to a company owned by Kroenke for the first time in three years.

The feeling among those I've spoken to this morning is that the club has listened and learned. But there will be stern questions about the £1m bonus paid to Gazidis on top of his £2.65m salary last season, despite the Gunners finishing the campaign without a trophy. Fans will also want to know about the future of Wenger - will he sign a new contract? His currently deal expires in the summer.
