Fans in his homeland have voted Tottenham striker Son Heung-min the top South Korean attacker, Yonhap news agency reports.

The poll, organised by the Korean Football Association gave Son 53.9% of the vote in the attackers category. He also won the vote for best goal of the year for his match-winner against Germany in the Rio Olympics.

Swansea City's Ki Sung-yeung - South Korea's national team captain - won the vote for best midfielder.

The Football Association has confirmed it intends to appeal against the £35,311 Fifa fine for poppy displays in their game with Scotland.

It tweeted: "We note the decision by the Fifa disciplinary committee, which we intend to appeal. As a first step, we have written to Fifa requesting the grounds for the decision."

Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye has pinpointed Senegal team-mate Sadio Mane as a player the Toffees must stop at Goodison Park tonight.

"Absolutely, he’s one of the main threats, the main dangers,” Gueye told the Liverpool Echo., external

“The ease at which he gets forward, his movement, he creates danger, space and chances for other people. 

 “But you could say that about a lot of Liverpool’s team, they’re a big threat."

Cristiano Ronaldo says 2016 was the "perfect year" after his hat-trick helped Real Madrid beat Kashima Antlers 4-2 to win the Club World Cup.

The 31-year-old scored from the spot and twice more in extra time as he added the Fifa title to the Euro 2016 and Champions League crowns.

Ronaldo also collected his fourth Ballon d'Or award in Paris last week.

"We won the Champions League, the Uefa Super Cup and the Club World Cup. I also won the Euros with Portugal. It was a perfect year. I am very happy to end the year in such a way.

Chelsea sit top of the Premier League on Christmas Day. Exactly 50% of the previous teams to do that have won the league. The biggest collapse was Aston Villa in 1998-99, as they went on to finish sixth.

The Blues were league leaders at Christmas for each of their four title victories - 2004-05, 2005-06, 2009-10 and 2014-15.

Meanwhile, Hull City are bottom of the table. Some 21 of the 24 teams (87.5%) to have been in that position have gone down.

Leicester in 2014-15 were one of the three to stay up.

Scottish Open winner Marco Fu declined the chance to celebrate his victory at the home of runner-up John Higgins.

The Hong Kong player took eight frames in a row to win 9-4 after trailing 4-1.

Higgins extended the welcome because Fu apparently had no family or friends at Glasgow's Emirates Arena to see him claim his third ranking title.

"At the start of the day I invited him back to the Higgins household - win or lose - and have a party," Higgins told BBC Scotland.

"But he was driving down to London early morning to get his flight home.

"He's one of the nicest guys on the tour so you can't grudge him this win. It's just a pity he's not got any friends or family here."

Lawyers for paralysed player Alex McKinnon have written to Australia's National Rugby League (NRL) amid a report he is planning a multi-million-dollar lawsuit.

The Daily Telegraph, external said McKinnon is seeking compensation from the NRL and the player whose tackle injured him.

The NRL confirmed to the BBC it had been contacted by McKinnon's lawyer, but said no claim had been lodged.

The former Newcastle Knights player, 24, must use a wheelchair for life.

He suffered extensive spinal injuries in the spear tackle by Melbourne Storm players in 2014.

The lawsuit reportedly names Storm player Jordan McLean, who was banned for seven matches for the dangerous tackle.

Jason Roberts has criticised Birmingham for not interviewing a black, Asian or minority ethnic candidate for the manager's job, despite signing a voluntary code.

Birmingham replaced Gary Rowett with Gianfranco Zola, after being one of 10 EFL clubs in the summer to commit to interviewing at least one BAME candidate for every senior first-team role.

Neighbours Wolves also did not apply the code when they hired Walter Zenga in July.

"It's hugely frustrating but that's the issue with having a voluntary code," said ex-West Brom striker Roberts. 

"There is no obligation. You have to commend the EFL for trying to do something, but the devil is in the detail and these clubs are not following through with it. 

"It's shameful, really. We're good enough to play but we're not represented off the pitch. In years to come we'll say 'how did we put up with it for so long?"'

Saturday's 2-2 draw with Leicester was Stoke's 55th Premier League game since an English player scored for them - pulling level with Newcastle's run.

Peter Crouch's 86th-minute goal in a 6-1 thumping of Liverpool on 24 May 2015 was the last time an Englishman found the net for the Potters in the league.

Newcastle's 55-game run ended when Steven Taylor scored for them in a 3-0 win over Cardiff in May 2014.

But the record for the longest English goal drought belongs to Arsenal, standing at 97 games until Theo Walcott's brace in a 2-2 draw with Birmingham in February 2008.

The only English outfield players in Stoke's starting XI at the weekend were Ryan Shawcross and Glen Johnson.

Former Birmingham boss Gary Rowett has been speaking about his surprise departure from St Andrew's and claims he is not bitter about the manner of his exit.

"I have got no sour grapes about it at all," Rowett told Talksport., external

"That is what happens when you buy a football club. You can choose to do whatever you want really. I have got no complaints about that."

Roger Federer missed half of 2016 with a knee injury but despite his enforced absence the 35-year-old Swiss claims it has not whet his appetite for retirement.

He told the New York Times:, external “I did get that taste of retirement. All of the sudden, I could be organised and say: ‘OK, we’re going to be four weeks at home in a row in the same place. Who do you want to go for dinner with, Mirka? Or who shall we catch up with?'

“I think that was really exciting and good for us to have that time. And it felt good, you know? It did feel good, but it (retirement) can totally wait. No problem for me. It can totally wait.”

The last time Everton faced Liverpool, back in April, they hardly touched the ball as they were thumped 4-0 and Toffees winger Gerard Deulofeu does not want a repeat of that nightmare.

"I think it is one of the worst games I saw in the last year,” Deulofeu told the Liverpool Echo., external

“We can’t play like that this season, we need to improve because that game was very poor for Everton. But we are confident of winning against Liverpool this season."
