Spain striker Aritz Aduriz has signed a new deal with Athletic Bilbao.

The 35-year-old has committed himself to the La Liga club until 2018 and he has a release clause of 40m euros (£33m).

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova will be out of action for at least six months after a knife attack at her home.

Kvitova,  26, said she was "fortunate to be alive" following a "burglary" incident on Tuesday when she struggled with an intruder. Surgeons spent almost four hours repairing tendons and nerves on her left hand - her playing hand.

In a statement, Kvitova's manager Katie Spellman said: "Surgeon Radek Kebrle said the operation on Petra's left hand went very well, with no complications. Petra will be on bed rest for 14 days, she will begin slow rehabilitation at around 6-8 weeks post operation. If that rehabilitation process goes well, Petra should be able to grip a racket for the first time (but not play tennis) at three months.

"The best-case scenario is that Petra will be able to return to the tennis court after six months. It is too soon to specify when precisely she can return to competition, but Petra is ready to do everything she can to get back competing at the highest level.

"Petra is happy with how the operation went and is in good spirits."

France will stop selecting non-French players who have qualified under the three-year residency rule, national federation boss Bernard Laporte says.

He announced the move after meeting World Rugby president Bill Beaumont.

"I told Bill that we've taken the political decision to stop playing foreign players in the national team," Laporte said.

Foreign-born players who currently play for France will remain eligible but new players will require a French passport.

Jose Mourinho has denied, external reports he has been offered a new long-term contract by Manchester United.

But Mourinho told Sky Sports: "If one day they bring the contract, I will sign it, I don't even need my advisers, I'll sign because I am loving it."

The ex-Chelsea boss admitted China is "attractive" but added he is "too young" to manage there.

Newcastle is on a shortlist of potential host cities for both European club rugby union finals in 2018.

The city is bidding to stage the finals of the Champions Cup, Challenge Cup and Challenge Cup qualifying competition.

If successful, Newcastle United's St James' Park would stage the 2018 European Champions Cup final.

European Professional Club Rugby have not disclosed the rival bids and the next stage of the selection process will see EPCR visit candidate cities. A final decision is expected to be made in April 2017.

Rangers fans are bidding to get The Dave Clark Five's 1963 single Glad All Over to the top of the charts. The song was played out during a match last Friday, when fans chanted the track with the chorus changed from: "I'm feeling... glad all over" to "We've got... Joey Garner".   

With just two days to go until the Christmas number one is announced Rangers are winning, with the single sitting top of the charts.

Manchester United's Henrikh Mkhitaryan has been named Armenian Footballer of the Year for the sixth year in a row.

It is also the seventh time the Armenia captain has won the award.

The 27-year-old earned 245 points out of a possible 250 to claim the award ahead of second-placed Gevorg Ghazaryan of Maritimo and third-placed Marcos Pizelli of Al-Fujeira.

Mkhitaryan has scored two goals in 12 appearances since moving  to United in the summer  

Earlier in the year, his United teammate Zlatan Ibrahimovic was named Sweden's top player for a 10th successive year.

Leicester's Manu Tuilagi hopes he can put his injury problems behind him but has played down the prospect of an England recall.

Tuilagi, 25, has been beset by injuries in the last couple of years and recently returned to action after two months out with a groin problem.

It potentially puts him in contention for a place in England boss Eddie Jones' Six Nations squad.

"I'm just focusing here at Tigers. I want to get some game time," he  told BBC Radio Leicester. "I get a text from Eddie every now and then just seeing how I am. If I play well here then hopefully the rest of it will take care of itself."

Organisers of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics have set a budget of 1.8 trillion yen (£12.4bn) but want to make savings.

The first official budget released on Wednesday is below a cap of 2tn yen (£13.8bn), but remains about six times more than the original estimate.

However, Tokyo governor Yuriko Koike said: "I appreciate we have reached a very significant milestone."

At its current budget, Tokyo would be the most expensive Summer Games,surpassing the £8.77bn for London 2012.

League One strugglers Coventry City have appointed Russell Slade as manager until the end of the season.

The Sky Blues are 23rd in the league and sacked Tony Mowbray in September.

The former Cardiff and Charlton boss takes over with immediate effect and his first match is against Bristol Rovers on Boxing Day.
