Jurgen is a great manager - Coutinhopublished at 08:19 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2017

Philippe Coutinho has praised the boss (always a good workplace philosophy) following the announcement that he has signed a new five-year contract at Liverpool.

"Jurgen [Klopp] is a great manager," the 24-year-old said. “We all can see how much he has changed here since he arrived - and how much he will change in future. He is a winner.

“It’s not only me, but every other player feels honoured to play at this great club for this great manager. This feeling has a very positive influence on us as players.”

More on the news Philippe Coutinho has signed a new long-term deal with Liverpool.

The Brazil international, 24, said: “I signed this new contract to stay here for a few more years because it’s a great honour for me.

"It gives me great happiness because I was welcomed here with open arms by everyone at the club and the supporters right from my first day. I am very thankful to this football club for everything.”

    What a polite young man.

The Guardian's back page today features details of the story we brought you yesterday afternoon.

Ex-Olympic champion Nicole Cooke told a Culture, Media and Sport select committee she was and still is "sceptical" of Team Sky's drug-free credentials and Sir Bradley Wiggins' therapeutic use exemptions.

"Taking TUEs just before major events raises questions for me," Cooke said.

    More on that later.

    The Daily Telegraph

The Daily Telegraph's headline has annoyingly managed to get that Simply Red song in my head.

If it's in yours too now, I can only apologise.

The headline, of course, refers to 35-year-old Roger Federer - geriatric in tennis years - who has reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open and will play his compatriot Stan Wawrinka in the last four.

"Never" is strong from The Mirror.

We wonder if the curse of the "long-term deal" will kick in where a player commits themself to a club for 47 years and six months later move to Real Madrid...

Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho has signed a new five-year deal with the club on about £150,000 a week.

The 24-year-old Brazil international is reportedly a long-term target of Barcelona, but his new deal - which makes him the best paid player at Liverpool - does not have a release clause.
