Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has shown his support for fellow Italian Claudio Ranieri, after he was sacked by Leicester City yesterday.

When asked about his reaction to Ranieri's sacking:

"Very, very sad. This is our job. I'm disappointed for him. He's a friend, a really good man, and a really good manager," Conte said.

"He reached a dream to win the title, I'm disappointed as a friend and as a coach."

And when quizzed about reports of the players having a role in Ranieri's sacking, Conte said:

"I don't like to follow this type of story, it's a lack of respect.

"If this happened, it means the club is poor, with no power. It's not right that players can control your destiny as a manager."

In a soundbite-packed news conference, Jose Mourinho also reacted to the news that the club's all-time leading goalscorer Wayne Rooney would be committing his immediate future to Manchester United, after reports suggested he could have been on his way to the Chinese Super League.

"Yes. He did in the right moment, the best moment, his statement," said Mourinho.

"The questions were the only questions he could answer. He did it in exactly in the right moment. That should be the last until the end of the season. He said he wants to help team fight for trophies, I said I would be happy for that.

"He is fine, he has been training with the team. He stayed at home this week so he could have one more important training sessions., No doubt he will be involved [in the EFL Cup final]."

Michael Carrick will be involved against Southampton on Sunday but fellow midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan is definitely out.

  18. Mourinho on Rostov: 'It's a bad draw'published at 14:11 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2017

    Manchester United

Jose Mourinho intimated the other day he did not fancy taking his Manchester United side on a trip to Russia in the last 16 of the Europa League. His nightmare came true as FC Rostov were pulled out of the bag.

He said: "It is a bad draw in every aspect. Far and difficult. Comes in a bad period.

"They had a very good Champions League campaign. They beat Ajax and Anderlecht in qualifiers and managed important results against Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid.

"They got third position in their group, leaving PSV Eindhoven out. I know the coach well. The team are very defensive and physical. It's a bad draw."
