Belgian 10th seed David Goffin has had to retire from his match against Argentina's Horacio Zeballos.

Goffin was leading 5-4 in the first set when he went sliding to make a shot and crashed into the court covers and the advertsing hoardings.

It looked like an ankle injury and he was not fit enough to carry on. Zeballos apologetically waved to the crowd as he went off court and into the fourth round.

It was a tough night for the Republic of Ireland last night.

Their under-strength team were outclassed by Mexico in a friendly match at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

First-half goals by Jesus Corona and Raul Jimenez, and Carlos Vela's tap-in after the break, secured the 3-1 win.

Substitute Stephen Gleeson's strike 13 minutes from time was some consolation for Martin O'Neill's men.

He said: "First of all, I was delighted with the game. Secondly, quite a number of players have not played football for quite a considerable amount of time.

"I thought it was a great work-out, a great exercise for us."

Liverpool hold talks with Salahpublished at 11:21 British Summer Time 2 June 2017

    Football

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Liverpool are holding further negotiations with Roma in an attempt to sign Egypt international forward Mohamed Salah after having a £28m bid turned down.

The Italian club is understood to want between £35m and £40m for 24-year-old Salah, who almost joined Liverpool before moving to Chelsea from FC Basel for £11m in January 2014.

Salah was a key figure as Roma finished second in Serie A, scoring 15 goals.

He had successful loan spells away from Chelsea at Fiorentina and then Roma before making that a permanent move for around £15m last summer. Salah is believed to be tempted by a return to the Premier League with Liverpool after an unfulfilling spell at Stamford Bridge.

Liverpool have already lined up the signing of Chelsea's 19-year-old striker Dominic Solanke, who will join on 1 July. The fee will be decided by a tribunal after he rejected a new contract at Stamford Bridge, with the fee expected to be around £3m.

Some interesting managerial shenanigans on the continent.

Apparently Borussia Dortmund are set to appoint former Rangers and Arsenal full-back Giovanni van Bronckhorst as new coach in the wake of Thomas Tuchel's departure.

Van Bronckhorst led Feyenoord to their first Dutch title since 1999 this season.

Lucien Favre, who guided Nice to a third-place finish in Ligue 1 this season, was also thought to be in the running.

What are the Lions' chances in New Zealand?published at 10:32 British Summer Time 2 June 2017

    Rugby union

    Bill Beaumont
Former England captain and Lions forward on BBC Radio 5 live

I think we've got a good chance but realistically it's one series win ever in 1971.

You're going to the double world champions - albeit they've lost a few of their great players.

Any New Zealand player will not want to be in a side that loses to the Lions.

To win the World Cup is the ultimate goal but beyond that I think beating the Lions is pretty high up there. Rest assured they'll be giving it everything.

Kay - what went wrong in 2005published at 10:26 British Summer Time 2 June 2017

    Ben KayImage source, Getty Images

Former England second row Ben Kay has been looking back over what went wrong the last time the Lions toured New Zealand.

The Lions lost that series 3-0 with coach Sir Clive Woodward's bloated and divided travelling party coming in for much criticism.

"Reading back through the tour playbook, I was reminded that some of the playing stuff was just so complicated," he told the Times., external

"It contained moves from all four countries that had grown organically over time but were suddenly all thrown in for everyone to learn.

"The players were overloaded with new information and so became hesitant. We were rabbits in the headlights of a well-oiled New Zealand juggernaut.

"In the end, that 2005 tour just reinforced that the Lions concept has to, in some respects, remain rooted in the amateur era. They have to rely on forging bonds and a strong team spirit off the field, implementing a simple game plan on it and trusting in the talent of their players. "
