    Watson 2-6 7-5 1-3 Svitolina*

Ah. I think this is an example of 'commentator's curse'. Within seconds of pressing publish, Heather Watson lost her serve. The Brit clunks a cross-court forehand into the tramlines on break point, giving the second seed some breathing space.

What of Watto? Over in Birmingham, the British number two (who has slipped out of the top 100 remember) is more than holding her own against the FIFTH best player in the world.

The day one programme has rattled though after two straight-set matches followed by Kyrgios's retirement, but we could be in for some longer evenings at Queen's this year. The thumping great new north stand, which now towers over the entrance to the site, means nearly 10,000 people can be packed into Centre Court. It also means longer queues to get in, and longer beaks between matches as more spectators head out for refreshment. Fortunately, everyone seem very focused when it comes to refreshment.

Shapovalov takes first setpublished at 17:17 British Summer Time 19 June 2017

    Edmund 6-7 (4-7) Shapovalov

Three set points for Denis Shapovalov - and the first two are on his serve.

One... is wiped out as Kyle Edmund's winds up his ferocious forehand and leaves the Canadian beaten.

Two... Edmund totally miscues a forehand return and Shapovalov yelps in delight.

Edmund must do this in three if he is going to win it...

Tie-break town. Denis Shapovalov has the Queen's crowd purring with a wonderful backhand pass that Britian's Kyle Edmund does not even have time to waft at.

A double break for the Canadian in the tie-break...

    Watson 2-6 7-5 Svitolina

Oh hello! Heather Watson has only gone and nabbed Elina Svitolina's serve. The Briton roars as she moves within a hold of the second set, then uses that momentum surge to hold and level the match. On we go!

Still these two continue to trade holds as quickly as primary school kids traded football stickers in the 1990s.

Edmund whacks an ace down the middle to seal his service game again. This one looks to be heading to a tie-break. Unless...

Svitolina holds, Heather holds. A much tougher task for the Briton, who knows she has no room for error with the Ukrainian only a game away from the match.

    Edmund 5-4 Shapovalov*

Denis Shapovalov was the Wimbledon champion last year. Boys' champion, of course. So he has serious potential.

He clocks up a break point for the first time in this opening set at Queen's, Edmund batters down a 107mph second serve to save it.

A break will do very nicely for Edmund now...

    Watson 2-6 4-4 Svitolina*

British number two Heather Watson has steadied the ship against world number five Elina Svitolina in Birmingham.

Watson has tumbled out of the top 100 after a tough year, but there are plenty of positives for the Guernsey girl to take from this second set.

    Can she nab a break?

    Edmund 4-3 Shapovalov*

Now then. A bit of pressure on the Denis Shapovalov serve. A stray forehand from the Canadian lands in the tramlines... deuce.

But Kyle Edmund's hopes are dashed almost as quickly as they arrive. Long-haired leftie Shapovalov (he's got the haircut of an Nirvana roadie) changes tack, going out wide with a 120mph serve. Ace.

Over to you Kyle... the Brit's serve is put under the microscope, but he digs deep to hold again.

Kyle Edmund is racing through his service games against Canada's Denis Shapovalov. The British number two is having no problems with the ball in hand, holding to love for the second time in the early stages of this first-round match at Queen's.

He's not been caught out by this earlier-than-expected start. Remember, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Grigor Dimitrov raced through their opening matches before Nick Kyrgios pulled out through injury.

Still on serve, Edmund leading 3-2...

The last meeting between Britain's Kyle Edmund and Canadian Denis Shapovalov created headlines all over the world.

    But not for the tennis.

But because Shapovalov whacked the ball in anger as the Davis Cup tie was slipping away from his grasp... clocking umpire Arnaud Gabas in the eye. Ouch.

Now the pair are back on court together for their first-round match at Queen's. Edmund and Shapovalov, that is.

Today's umpire Ali Nili is wearing shades. Perhaps for double protection...
