  6. Willis back in the Wimbledon groovepublished at 13:47 British Summer Time 26 June 2017

    Piers Newbery
    BBC Sport at Wimbledon qualifying

It's like we're back at Wimbledon 2016 - Marcus Willis might look like the unlikeliest of tennis players, but stick him on a grass court and he's a nightmarish opponent. Serving and volleying at every opportunity, slicing his returns and finding angles all around the net, he leads Andrej Martin 7-5.

    BBC Sport at Wimbledon qualifying

Maria Sharapova was supposed to be the big draw christening Roehampton's new show court, instead it is Marcus Willis. The crowd has packed in to see if he can repeat last year's miracle run, but the chances are slim - he is ranked 387, Andrej Martin is ranked 146. And that's just round one of qualifying. It's a long road back to Centre Court and Roger Federer.

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova has pulled out of Eastbourne with an abdominal injury.

The Czech won the Aegon Classic in Birmingham on Sunday, her second tournament since she was stabbed by an intruder at her home in December.

Victory moved the 27-year-old, who returned to action in May, up to 12th in the world rankings.

American Donald Young was feeling the pressure from Britain's Kyle Edmund and he lashed out at his team (including his mother) after dropping the second set.

"Let me hear you. Let me hear you now or go away!" he shouted.

But the motivation tactic obviously worked because he has taken the deciding set 6-3 to complete victory in an hour and 55 minutes.

    Wimbledon qualifying

    Piers Newbery

We have a British winner early on day one, and it could be significant - 18-year-old Jay Clarke from Derby is on the rise, so much so he was invited along with the British Davis Cup team and then by Andy Murray to practice at the French Open.

The teenager has beaten El Salvador's Marcelo Arevalo 6-3 6-4 in the first round.

"The first few times you step on court with them, it's a big thing," says Clarke. "But you do get used to it. I'm just taking it day by day here because a lot can happen."
