Wellbrock makes an early move with 11 lengths remaining. He's more than a second ahead of Paltrinieri.

He's using his breathing to keep an eye on his rivals, changing sides depending on the direction in which he's swimming.

    Men's 1500m freestyle final

Four, maybe five swimmers in contention in this one. The lead has switched to and fro between Wellbrock and Paltrinieri and this is setting up to be a very exciting finish.

We're halfway through and at the moment, it's Wellbrock who is just ahead. Mykhaylo Romanchuk of Ukraine has pulled away with the two ahead of him.

    Men's 1500m freestyle final

Wellbrock has made his move and has closed the gap on Paltrinieri.

The Italian still leads at 500m but only just - he'd normally like a much bigger advantage at this point.

At the 300m mark, it's Italy's Paltrinieri who has started the best. He's got a 0.39 lead over Germany's Florian Wellbrock at the turn.

    Men’s 1500m freestyle final

Back to today and let's get the swimming action under way. There are no Britons in this first final but Olympic champion Gregorio Paltrinieri of Italy still has serious competition for the European title.

He lines up in lane six. In lane three is Germany’s world leader Florian Wellbrock, top qualifier Damien Joly of France is in lane four, and also keep an eye on Ukraine’s Mykhaylo Romanchuk in lane five.

So the time might have been wrong but it was still a world record swim from Adam Peaty to win 100m breaststroke gold last night.

Shall we re-live it? Why not.

  7. 'It is important the results are correct'published at 16:55 British Summer Time 5 August 2018

In a British Swimming statement, national performance director Chris Spice said: “We support LEN’s vigilance in this matter and appreciate the time they have taken to make sure all times are correct.

“We want this event to be remembered for the amazing achievements of the athletes so it is important that the results are correct.

“We don’t want this to take away from Adam’s amazing performance which we all experienced in a fantastic arena."

  8. Timing errorspublished at 16:53 British Summer Time 5 August 2018

But before all of that, first a bit of news regarding yesterday's swimming.

It appears Adam Peaty’s world record time of 57.00 seconds in yesterday's 100m breaststroke final was incorrect due to a technical error with the timing equipment, and was in fact 57.10. Thankfully for him though, that is still a new world record.

Organisers (LEN) says several other races were affected. All timings, bar the last three races of last night's session, were out by 0.10.

    Rowing

Four medals, yes, but no gold for GB's rowers, with women's coach Paul Thompson telling BBC Sport there is "a lot of work to do".

It is the first time GB have not won European rowing gold since 2013, having topped the rowing medal table at three of the last four championships.

"It has been a tough weekend, there's no sugar-coating it," said Thompson. "We've still got some progress we can make, but do we have a standout gold medal cert? Absolutely not."
