George Groves produced a superb performance to retain his WBA world super-middleweight title as an enthralling points win over Chris Eubank Jr took him into the World Boxing Super Series final.

The 29-year-old was patient throughout, preventing his rival from boxing up close by mixing good footwork with solid counter-punches.

A cut above Eubank Jr's right eye in the third round hampered the 28-year-old, who enjoyed joy of his own in a riveting 12th round, where noise in the Manchester Arena reached a crescendo with both men looking vulnerable.

But Groves' poise in parts was key and the 117-112 116-112 115-113 scores on the judges' cards means he will meet either Callum Smith or Jurgen Brahmer in the final.

Groves' camp celebrated wildly on the announcement - their man had upset the bookmakers' odds, despite coming into the bout as a world champion and having only ever lost when contesting world titles in the past.

He felt aggrieved he did not score a knockdown when Eubank Jr tumbled to the floor in the 10th and also revealed he thinks he dislocated his shoulder in the thrilling final round.

Chris Eubank Sr speaking to ITV Box Office: "George boxed. I am stunned. Perfect tactics. He always fainted, he came forward 40% of the time and kept Junior on the back foot.

"He [Groves] boxed beautifully. We can't take anything away from him. When Junior was able to get inside he was holding him down, spoiling the fight, which is what you're supposed to do.

"He [Junior] left it far too late. He should have fought like like that from the first round. I hope he will learn from this and I think he will. He just didn't use his boxing skills, his jab.

"I was telling him to bring the fight to Groves, he wasn't using combinations. The tactics they put together excellent. He was strong. Yesterday [in training] I thought I saw him trembling. He was strong and engaged."

On what he has said to Eubank Jr since the fight: "[I've told him to] look for a rematch, keep to your boxing skills. He knows his boxing skills and he chose to use power. What now? We go on. We get stronger, better."

Instead of celebrating victory, George Groves has gone straight to the Manchester Royal Infirmary to check out the damage to his shoulder.

So where next for both men? George Groves left the arena with his shoulder strapped up, with a suspected dislocated shoulder.

He is meant to fight again on 2 June in the final against either Callum Smith or Germany's Jurgen Brahmer, who fight in the second semi-final next week.

What happens in the tournament if Groves is not fit enough to fight at the O2 Arena in London? Eubank, rather cheekily, asked if he would then advance to the final.

Will the fight between Smith and Brahmer in effect be a final? Will it be rescheduled? Questions for the organisers.

Some quotes from Chris Eubank Jr said: "I thought it was close, I thought I did enough in the late rounds to win the fight. All credit to George Groves it is all part of boxing. It was a good enough fight to have a rematch.

"I thought I pressured him the entire fight, I was landing shots, he cut me, I couldn't see much in the majority of the fight. A cut is a cut but I kept going, that is what a warrior does. If he doesn't go through to the final I don't know if that means I go through automatically.

"Groves has the heart of a true champion and did what he had to do. I was catching him with a lot of shots and he didn't give up, hopefully we can get a rematch. There are other world titles out there I have proved I'm more than capable of fighting at world level and I'm still going after the people that have the titles."

George Groves speaking to ITV Box Office said: "I'm very, very happy with the performance. [my shoulder is] very sore, but I wasn't going to let anything beat me tonight.

"It was about who wanted it most. Of course it was. He had success because I did something wrong."

On the cut to Eubank Jr's eye: "I'd already hurt him before the cut. He wasn't dabbing [the cut] so I don't think it was obscuring his vision. The better man won, but credit to Junior for getting through the match because I hurt him a lot. He dug it out.

"It's been a long time since I won in front of a big crowd. Obviously, against Carl Froch I didn't win. It's nice to get that justification. So, away we go. Next."

George Groves has apparently sustained a shoulder injury in the last round. If he has won, he is meant to be fighting in the World Boxing Super Series final and that is scheduled to take place on 2 June so Groves will pray it's nothing serious.

We go to the scorecards. If you like the aggressor, Eubank may have your vote. Just maybe. It seems that Groves used his boxing skill, his knowledge to pick him off at range and avoid some crazy, wild swinging.

The judges will decide.

Eubank has absolutely been giving it his all in an attempt to do something, but Groves has looked too smart. Groves gets hit with a right hook. One swings, the other swings. Eubank lands a left, then a right uppercut, both bodies covered in blood. Brutal, bloody, intense.
