George Groves with a classy statement of respect for the new champion Callum Smith.

"It was not meant to be. Full credit to Callum. Boxed-well, heavy-handed. He got me with a body shot at the end, which is embarrassing for me, because I've never been dropped with a body shot in my life, but he got the decisive shot in the end."

On the shoulder injury he had been struggling with this year: "I'm not going to make excuses. The shoulder worked and Callum was the better man on the night. That's tough for me to say but I have to be honest."

    And his future plans?

"I'm going to have a long rest because it's been a dogged year. I won the world title just over a year ago, but I want to go home because I miss my wife and kids."

"It's been a long journey with him. Frustration of being denied world title opportunities. We came into this tournament to become a world champion and we leave as a world champion. We are glad we fought the number one seed. This is the beginning, there's a new name in the super-middleweight division."

  10. 'A lifetime of work'published at 21:58 British Summer Time 28 September 2018

    Smith wins WBA world title

New WBA world super-middleweight champion Callum Smith: "It has been a long time coming and there have been times where you doubt if a chance will come.

"I know how good I am and knew I had the ability. I had a slow couple of years and people forgot about me. I think tonight I reminded people.

"I felt I was ahead at the time of the stoppage. I feel like I was beating him at his own game, it was a boxing match at range. We knew he could be patient and try and set you up all night. I knew I could do that myself. I got my big shots off first and he couldn't take it.

"Credit to Groves, he has been a great champion. Whether he carries on or not, I'd like to wish him good luck.

"I waited so long. It just means everything. I am not a man who shows a lot of emotion, you never see me ecstatic but you can see tonight it is a lifetime of work all gone into one."

    Smith wins WBA world title

We have a new world champion, a new British world champion at that. Callum 'Mundo' Smith of Liverpool. Like his brother Liam, he can have extra Yorkshire pudding for Sunday dinner in the Smith household as both have ruled the world.

The other two - Paul and Stephen - didn't do bad as British champs but sadly fellas, you'll have to make do with broccoli.

  18. The left-hook of a lifetimepublished at 21:47 British Summer Time 28 September 2018

    Smith beats Groves

It was a left hook which started the downfall of George Groves, ending his reign as champion.

A well-timed, short left hook. Groves stumbled back and Callum Smith just chased him to the corner. An array of hooks, chopping right hands from up close, body shots, the full arsenal.

In the end, Groves bends at the knees and goes down. It was too much for him.

By the time the count was done, Smith was on his knees. His corner rush into the ring...

Callum Smith has done it. What an assault, from nowhere. He has broken the heart of George Groves who cannot answer the count and shakes his head as the referee nears 10. Something is not right with him but he has been put away here....

Again Callum Smith is down, it's a fall. There's not a great deal in this, 4-2 to Smith, maybe 3-3?

Both men look respectful enough of one another but HANG ON.... CALLUM SMITH HAS GROVES HURT....
