Sam Moyse: It’s not even the fact it’s in Jeddah, if the undercard was half decent and it was cheaper they could have made something of it but ultimately this is just not the night it could’ve been for British boxing.

  3. Not listening to mum...published at 20:53 British Summer Time 28 September 2018

Callum Smith could be the second of the four Smith brothers to land a recognised world title tonight. Only Liam has done that so far, though Paul and Stephen have reached world-title bouts. Those experiences are of use if you listen to the Liverpudlian.

"I've been there for every world title fight my family have been involved in. I've been there in the changing rooms," Smith, 28, told BBC Sport. "I've experienced the nerves - perhaps more when it's not me and when it's one of them.

"Defeat is tough. I lost in the amateurs, losing a controversial fight that stopped me going to an Olympic Games - and it's not a nice feeling. Being in the changing rooms with my brothers for fights they've lost having worked so hard, my mum has said all the highs aren't worth the one low.

"She has a point but I have come too far to turn away and give up now. I've chased a dream since I was a kid and if I didn't believe I was good enough to achieve it then I would have walked away. But I know I am good enough to beat Groves."

We have 10 minutes to go....

George Groves stopped Jamie Cox and out-pointed Chris Eubank Jr to get here.

Callum Smith was too much for Erik Skoglund and Nicky Holzken.

We reach this point, in the slightly random city of Jeddah. Over a year in the making, a world title on the line, a Muhammad Ali Trophy. Serious, serious stuff.

Joe Gallagher said we've saved our best for the final and we're going to see the absolute best tonight. These guys are going to make it super fight. There's going to be fireworks from these big punchers and it will be a ding-dong battle."

The price of oil is key to the Saudi economy. When prices swing like they have, new ideas are needed. The authorities have decided to focus on new income streams, improving tourism options and adding key events.

The WWE has held a televised stadium show in Jeddah recently, Formula E has signed a 10-year race deal in the region and the UFC is expected to one day land in the desert. These large-scale events send a message that Saudi Arabia is open for the biggest events and visitors in tow.

"The vision isn't just to hold these events but to make them world-class, to show this country is competing," says Hussam Al Mayman, a reporter, producer and presenter in Jeddah.

"Those in charge do have the mentality and the finances to pull something like that off. It's more an attitude of 'we need this, these wins are crucial' rather than being about financial return.

"It's more about laying the foundations for a solid platform for our future."

  12. 'Boxing is becoming a global sport'published at 20:23 British Summer Time 28 September 2018

    Groves v Smith

Former two-weight undisputed world champion Evander Holyfield has been speaking to ITV Box Office about the occasion in Saudi Arabia.

He said: "It represents a lot. I guess boxing used to be mainly in the United States but now it's becoming a global sport."

On the importance of a trophy named after legend Muhammad Ali: "When I was a kid I was told I could be Muhammad Ali if I listened and worked hard and that made me the man I am today."

His thoughts on Groves versus Smith: "You have to be first. You can't take any chances. My mother always said there's always someone wanting to take something from you and that's what it takes to be champion. You have to take it from the champion. I think this could be a really exciting fight."

  13. New things in Saudi...published at 20:21 British Summer Time 28 September 2018

It probably hasn't escaped your attention that we are in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for this.

This is a country where women have only been allowed to drive from earlier this year. Exercise for women in public is a little frowned upon, alcohol is banned, as was the cinema until recently. It's a very different place to what many in the western world are used to.

But things are changing. Well, that's the plan. The authorities here don't want to be a nation dependent on oil production anymore and thus want their country to look more appealing to tourists. Big events like tonight's are one way to show they are competitive and serious.

    Eubank Jr beats McDonagh

Chris Eubank Jr is asked if a shoulder injury was to blame for JJ McDonagh retiring: "So he says. I've been out of the ring seven months. It was a good fight while it lasted.

"I was starting to land at will. He was starting to feel my power. At the end of the day it's a win, now we look for a big fight at the end of the year.

"I caught him at the end of the first round. I would have gone into destroyer mode but I wanted the rounds. I wanted to show some skills, to show the haters and critics there's a different side to me."

JJ McDonagh: "If I was here for a payday I wouldn't have got up off the ground. I didn't do any sparring, I've had a shoulder injury. On my kids' life, I had a bad shoulder. I know he's a great boxer, and it's an honour to be in the ring with him.

"I hurt my shoulder in the second round, my good arm to fight him with and keep him back, but there's no point hanging around for a beating for seven more rounds."

Eubank Jr: "In my second fight I had an injury and fought with one hand".

McDonagh: "Who did you fight in that? A journeyman. Don't be tough or we will have a straightener."

It looks like an injury to the right shoulder has ended JJ McDonagh's quest against Chris Eubank Jr. Not ideal for organisers who are trying to hype the crowd in Jeddah.

Those new to the sport may be a little confused by it all, though they cheer Eubank as his arms are raised.

McDonagh went to Eubank to explain why he has withdrawn. The Irishman was probably three rounds down after the first nine minutes but it's still a bit of a tame end.

Will Smith tunes play out in the arena. Not even they working.
