Bad round for Josh Taylor. He seemed to be hurt a couple of times. Where has his defence gone? Where has his movement gone?

    Taylor v Ramirez

In the third and this bull-like approach from Jose Ramirez is working for him as again he pushes Josh Taylor back to the ropes to tee off. Each shot is cheered wildly by his fans at ringside.

A minute of the round left, a right to the head and straight into the body from Ramirez. He's going upstairs and down. Josh Taylor leaps in and misses and WHAM, uppercut jolts the Scot in the centre of the ring.

He needs the bell. There it is.

Work to do. It's far from a disaster but there is WORK TO DO!

I think Ramirez is turning out to be a lot faster than Taylor expected.

I thought that was a Ramirez round. I don't think Taylor is looking that comfortable in there.

    Taylor v Ramirez

Jose Ramirez looks to inch close and throw a big right hand but Josh Taylor sees it and moves off to evade. He can't eat those at any point. Taylor, in tartan shorts, leaps forward with a left hand and misses. They grapple, he digs a body shot in up close. Jose Ramirez will be thankful he's done his sit ups when those are launched in on him.

A tight round, not a lot has landed heavily but late in the round Ramirez gets some work off with Taylor on the ropes and this flurry will likely nick him the round for me. Credit to the American, he's bringing it and Taylor lands a right hand on the bell.

My oh my it's warming up in Sin City.

This fight has warmed up very quickly. I thought it was a really tight round but I just give it to Ramirez.

    And here we go.

Josh Taylor, 36 minutes away from some British sporting history. Jose Ramirez, an underdog with a point to prove.

Taylor starts up on his toes. He stands tall. Ramirez walks in, crouched and tucked up. A left to the body from Taylor looks sharp and catches the eye.

Taylor, southpaw, walks on to a jab late in the round. Both men throw a feint at the same second, already you can see the high level they're at as things look slick and, crucially, vicious when they get close enough to throw.

Round ends, Taylor raises his left hand.

The fighters' names are read. Ramirez bounces on the spot, he looks totally in the zone. Taylor raises one hand as his name is called.

No doubt he's the man getting booed here. Not that he likely cares.

He's in the middle of the ring waiting for his rival.

Here we go. Let's do this...

  9. Ring walk time...published at 02:58 British Summer Time 23 May 2021

    Taylor v Ramirez

Jose Ramirez trots into the arena, fans cheer, it's intimate and loud.

Josh Taylor is bouncing his way in. There are more boos, he's walking in to some 50 Cent. It goes something like....

"If I can't do it, it can't be done..."

Tyson Fury is filming himself at ringside. He was fighting Anthony Joshua last week, it's Deontay Wilder this week. Who knows, Mike Tyson by Wednesday?

They are on opposite sides of the Edinburgh divide; European Bantamweight champion Lee McGregor is a big Hearts fan while Josh Taylor supports Hibernian, who lost the Scottish Cup final to St Johnstone on Saturday.

But McGregor is backing his fellow countryman to achieve greatness tonight.

It would drag home above the dozens of champions we have each decade. It takes him to a new level. It will be 18 fights and he might be the unified champion.

He will have acquired the four belts against three unbeaten men. I am not inventing this. These are guys who won world titles in hard fights.

Ken Buchanan had had almost 40 fights when he went and won a world title. It's a different game now. Is it easier? I'm not sure it is.

Josh Taylor before a fight gets angry, he gets mean, he gets nasty and he's getting in Ramirez's face. This is what he does. Two days after the fight he's a great guy.

Tonight he needs to be cool, calm and collected.

The trouble with Josh, he does like to stand and fight. He can't let Ramirez dictate this.

Two weeks ago was Canelo Alvarez against Billy Joe Saunders, but this fight is bigger, this fight is better, this fight is more tantalising. There are more potential twists and turns in this fight than there were in that fight.

  20. Why this is special...published at 02:39 British Summer Time 23 May 2021

    Taylor v Ramirez

    Steve Bunce
Boxing pundit on BBC Radio 5 Live

In 1988, the WBO was formed.

The other sanctioning bodies are the IBF, the WBC and the WBA. Those are the four belts. I can't tell you how many world champions there have been in the 17 weight divisions since 1988. I'll take a punt at more than 400. That's probably more than 1,000 fights and yet just six of them have been for the four belts.

Boxing needs undisputed champions. Fans, casual cans, they wonder why fights don't happen. If we can get fighters saying how important it is - saying they want that - it would be fantastic.
