Tyson Fury's vow to retire from professional boxing could mark the end, for now at least, of an extraordinary career.

His rise, fall, and rise again may have seen a final chapter as the British fighter retained his WBC heavyweight world title with victory against Dillian Whyte.

Fury stopped his compatriot in the sixth round in front of a 94,000-capacity Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

And afterwards the 33-year-old said: "You know I promised my lovely wife Paris of 14 years that after the three [Deontay] Wilder fights that would be it, and I meant it. It was a great trilogy but I meant that.

"I got offered to fight at Wembley at home and I believe I owed it to the fans, every person in the UK, to fight at Wembley I think this is it - this might be the final curtain for the Gypsy King. What a way to go out."

WBC champion Tyson Fury produced a stunning one-punch stoppage in the sixth round to beat fellow Briton Dillian Whyte, and then suggested he may now retire from the sport.

Fury dominated what was a scrappy bout and then unleashed a vicious right uppercut.

Whyte, admirably, got to his feet within the count before staggering into the referee as the fight was halted.

"This might be the final curtain for the Gypsy King," Fury said post-fight.

Fury - who also retained his Ring Magazine belt - is unbeaten in 33 bouts, while Whyte - suffering his third loss in 31 bouts - falls short on his first attempt at a world title.

If Fury does decide to hang up the gloves, the 33-year-old will miss out on an opportunity to fight for the undisputed crown - a fight which could potentially be staged later this year - and a chance to cement his status as Britain's greatest ever heavyweight.

"I promised my wife that would be it after the [Deontay] Wilder fight," he added. "But I got offered a fight at Wembley and I owed it to the fans. What a way to go out."

  6. 'I have fulfilled everything I wanted to'published at 00:17 British Summer Time 24 April 2022

Fury beats Whyte with sixth-round TKO

Tyson Fury on his plans to retire from professional boxing: "I'm going to go home with my wife and my kids. I have been on the road for a long time and I have fulfilled everything I have wanted to.

"I'm going to retire as the second heavyweight in history after Rocky Marciano to retire undefeated. Two time Ring magazine heavyweight champion of the world. All roads led to the Gypsy King and I was unbeatable at this game."

Asked if this was the end of his career: "I definitely think so but I will not rule out exhibitions. "I want to have fun. I'm an entertainer and it's what I do best. Big Francis Ngannou is on my hitlist in an exhibition fight.

"However he wants it, in a cage, in a ring, with boxing gloves or UFC gloves, we can make it happen. He is a monster of a guy and so am I, so it will be a clash of the titans."

"He didn't fight a world champion tonight. I ain't no world champion.

"I'm a legend in this game. You cannot deny it. I'm the best heavyweight that has ever been. There has never been one that can beat me. I'm not just being confident.

"I have a 6ft 9in frame, 270lbs weight, can move like a middleweight, can hit like a thunderstorm and can take a punch like anybody else."

Fury beats Whyte with sixth-round TKO

More from Tyson Fury's post-fight news conference: "I said I was going to put on a proper show. I could feel it. My feet were good, my jab was superb and I was jabbing the head right off him.

"We practiced long range punching and using the jab off the shoulder. The shot that kept catching him was the check hook. We kept practicing it on the pads.

"I clipped the Bodysnatcher with a left hook to the body and I said 'you're hurt Bodysnatcher aren't you'?

    "And he said 'yeah'."

Fury beats Whyte with sixth-round TKO

Speaking at the post-fight news conference, Tyson Fury said: "I was here at the press conference a few weeks ago on my own and I single-handedly sold 94,000 tickets.

"I don't believe there is an entertainer in the world of sport who could sell that many on his own. So I pat myself on the back for that."

Fury beats Whyte with sixth-round TKO

In the post-fight news conference, Tyson Fury has just paid tribute to promoter Frank Warren.

After beating Wladimir Klitschko in 2015, Fury, beset with personal problems, did not fight for two and a half years and went up to 28 stone, before he managed to get back in fighting condition and return to the ring.

"Frank brought me back from the brink of death when everyone else was scared to get me in the ring," said Fury.

"He brought me back from being a fat man of 28 stone."

  13. 'Tyson's got nothing else to prove'published at 23:44 British Summer Time 23 April 2022

Fury beats Whyte with sixth-round TKO

Tyson Fury’s wife Paris has said the WBC champion had nothing more to prove to the world of boxing.

She told talkSPORT: “The world has seen him reach the pinnacle. He’s just proved it again, the top quality that he is.

“I don’t enjoy this one bit. This is great, the celebratory bit. But all the lead-up and actual fight is a horrible situation to be in.

“He’s got nothing else to prove in the whole world.”

As we mentioned earlier, no boxer has held all the major world heavyweight belts since Britain's Lennox Lewis did so in 2000.

Oleksandr Usyk, who now holds the other titles - the WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO - is set to have a rematch with the man he beat to secure his gold, Anthony Joshua, in July.

Could WBC champion Tyson Fury stay around long enough in boxing to then fight the winner for all the titles? He says probably not, but we will have to see on that one.
