Oscar Piastri pipped McLaren team-mate Lando Norris to pole position at the Dutch Grand Prix.

Piastri turned the tables on Norris, who had appeared the quicker McLaren driver all weekend, by 0.012 seconds as their title battle continues to be intensely close.

The Australian leads Norris by nine points in the championship with 10 races remaining.

Both times were set on their first laps in final qualifying at Zandvoort. Norris was actually quicker than Piastri by 0.004secs on their final runs, but neither driver improved on their initial attempt.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen took third, 0.263secs slower than Piastri, while Racing Bulls' Isack Hadjar put in the best performance so far of his impressive rookie season to qualify fourth.

Mercedes' George Russell took fifth, ahead of the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. Leclerc had trailed Hamilton pretty much all weekend but beat the seven-time champion by 0.05secs when it mattered.

RB's Isack Hadjar finished in P4 and he spoke to Sky Sports: "Most of the times there are three free practice sessions, you're more than ready to go at it.

"This morning it took me a lap to get back in the rhythm and then I felt comfortable so maybe we should make the weekend a bit shorter.

"Usually we do struggle a lot with the wind, in Budapest I struggled massively, but here you need to be very lucky with the wind gusts.

"Every five seconds the wind kind of changes and I probably got lucky on the middle part of the lap, I wasn't hit by that wind and the car felt more grip overall."

  4. 'I had to dig very deep'published at 15:37 British Summer Time

Replays are showing Isack Hadjar celebrating securing fourth and it is fair to say he enjoyed that result quite a bit!

"I enjoyed it a lot," he tells Sky Sports a little later when it has all sunk in a bit.

"To be honest it was a very tough qualifying. Liam was faster than me most of the session and I had to dig very, very deep to find something special."

  5. 'They should be happy with their driving' - Stellapublished at 15:33 British Summer Time

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella spoke to Sky Sports: "Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have been very, very close throughout the qualifying session and in Q3 in the first attempt they were 12 milliseconds apart and the second attempt they were like four milliseconds apart.

"Both drivers are driving the car to the limit and sometimes it's just subtleties that make a difference. They both deserve the pole position but only one can have it and Oscar got it today and well done to him.

"We know that Oscar is a build-up driver, he likes to build through the weekend and that's what he did again. He's also very capable of delivering when it's the time to show.

"Lando as well was very close, but both drivers did imperfect laps let me say with some issues here and there but overall we are happy with the result and they should be happy with their driving.

"There's a lot of wind today, so it's difficult to put perfect laps together, a positive day and a good position for tomorrow."

Oscar Piastri has won six of 14 races this season, Lando Norris five.

Oscar Piastri puts his McLaren on pole, he said: "That was the definition of peaking at the right time, the whole weekend I felt pretty good but there have been a couple of corners that I’ve not been able to go any faster.

"I didn’t really go any faster in those corners but I found some more elsewhere so I’m super happy to come away with the result.

"Obviously we’ve still got all the points tomorrow but it was looking like a tricky weekend so far, so to come out with that I’m pretty stoked.

On keeping his cool: "You just keep chipping away at it, that’s one of the nice things about having this practise is you’ve got time to work on it.

"I just improved the parts where I was already not bad and made up the difference that way. There are still some things to try and improve and work on but overall I’m very happy."

On the strategy: "We’re both [Lando Norris] trying to beat each other every weekend, there’s a few variables in there you can mix up so let’s see what happens tomorrow."

  8. 'Not the end of the world'published at 15:14 British Summer Time

Lando Norris, who finished second in qualifying, on if he is disappointed to miss out on pole: "Yes and no, it was close. It has been close all weekend so could easily go one way or the other. Yes I could be a little disappointed not on pole but not the end of the world either.

"With the wind like this, a lot of it is down to luck. I had a good lap. I am in a good position and we are in a good fight.

"We will have some fun tomorrow. We both had terrible starts last year, we will see. It is a long race with a lot of laps."

  9. 'I’m very happy with that' - Verstappenpublished at 15:10 British Summer Time

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen will start in third, he said: "This weekend so far was quite tricky for us but qualifying was basically the best I’ve felt all weekend and that’s exactly what you want. To get P3 here I’m very happy with that.

"The energy of the crowd the whole weekend has been amazing, to see so much orange on the grandstand is always very special.

On the track: "It’s all what I like so I’m happy to be here."

On the race: "Let’s see what we can do, the McLarens have been very fast all weekend so it’s also important to just focus on our own race and see what we can do.

"This has been a good step forward so I hope we can keep that up going into the race tomorrow."
