Now Charles Lelcerc nudges ahead of his former Ferrari team-mate Carlos Sainz to go quickest with 1:41.635.

Lewis Hamilton is fastest of all through the first sector but can't keep that up through the next two as he goes sixth quickest.

Liam Lawson does a 1:41.7 to go fastest of all. He's on fresh softs.

Carlos Sainz then goes quicker with 1:41.691.

Max Verstappen is running the new downforce levels for the first time this weekend and it is a very decent first effort with this setup as he splits the McLarens, just under a tenth of a second off Oscar Piastri.

Everyone bar Franco Colapinto are on used softs as the McLarens clock the first times of the session - a 1:41.998 for Oscar Piastri and 1:42.076 for Lando Norris.

  5. 'Can Piastri produce as good a pole lap again today?'published at 15:05 British Summer Time 26 July

One of the questions that arose after the sprint race was could or would McLaren change their car setup to avoid happening in the grand prix what happened in the sprint race?

I found out that McLaren cannot run a lower downforce setup than they had before because the rear wing that they had on for the sprint race is their lowest downforce rear wing at the moment.

They probably wouldn't have wanted to change their setup anyway because it's due to rain tomorrow, but it's just an interesting point.

We might expect to see a similar performance profile in this qualifying session to what we saw yesterday.

Oscar Piastri was in scintillating form yesterday and can he produce as good a lap again today?

Some miscommunication in the effort to get out onto the track as Nico Hulkenberg tried to get into the queue but clipped Lance Stroll.

A new front wing needed for Hulkenberg and Stroll will have to abort his first run already.

The first part of qualifying is under way as the queuing cars trundle out onto the track.

A slight bit of drama before we even get under way as Oliver Bearman almost hits Fernando Alonso just trying to get into the queue out of the pit lane.

The incident has been noted by stewards.

McLaren don't appear to have changed anything from their setup so far this weekend. Instead it is Red Bull who appear to have made changes, with more rear wing on Max Verstappen's car.

Qualifying looks set to be dry but it could be different for tomorrow's race so there's certainly an element of uncertainty that teams are having to contend with in terms of their setups.

McLaren may opt to adjust their downforce levels, having not really been able to get close to Red Bull during the sprint race.

  13. Hamilton hoping for a better resultpublished at 14:41 British Summer Time 26 July

Lewis Hamilton will be hoping for a better qualifying session than he had for the sprint, when a spin meant he started towards the back of the grid.

He finished 15th in the race earlier today, and said afterwards: “Well, the positive is I didn’t spin and I did move forward, but it was a really tough race.

“We were all in the DRS train, which was unfortunate, but I’ve definitely learned a lot about the upgrades that we have.

"It’s just about fine tuning it. Yesterday was the first time running it for me and I think now’s it’s just about fine tuning it.

"My actual pace in [sprint] qualy was pretty good, not so much I would say in the race, but position is obviously important here but I hope today for a better result.”

Red Bull's Max Verstappen held off the McLarens of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris to win a tense sprint race at the Belgian Grand Prix.

Verstappen passed Piastri on the opening lap with a slipstream up the long Kemmel straight and used his Red Bull's straight-line advantage to hold the Australian at arm's length for the entire 15 laps.

Piastri was within a second of Verstappen - and usually much closer - for the entire race, but never quite managed to get close enough to challenge for the lead.

Norris lost third place to Ferrari's Charles Leclerc on the opening lap. But once he past the Monegasque just after half distance, the Briton closed on the lead fight, where like Piastri he was unable to make any progress.

Piastri's second place moved him one point further ahead of Norris in the championship, with qualifying for Sunday's grand prix later on Saturday.

Verstappen's victory marked a winning start for Red Bull under new team principal Laurent Mekies, after Christian Horner was sacked from the role following the British Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen spoiled McLarens good weekend so far with victory in the Sprint race earlier.

But they - and in particular Oscar Piastri - have been supreme over one lap so far in Belgium and will fancy their chances of getting back to dominant ways in this afternoon's qualifying.

  17. 'I’m just doing 15 qualifying laps to try and keep them behind' - Verstappenpublished at 12:00 British Summer Time 26 July

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen wins the sprint race, he said: "It worked out really well, that’s obviously the only opportunity you are going to get against them and we got it.

"I know it was going to be very tough to keep them behind, we were just playing like cat and mouse, DRS, battery usage and it was a good race within seven-tenths.

"I couldn’t afford to make big mistakes, I had one tiny lock up in the last corner but apart from that it was a great result to keep them behind and to have a win here in Spa. To have a win in Spa it still counts I’m very happy with what we did out there."

On the brakes: "You are trying to keep faster cars behind so you’re having to drive over the limit to what you think is possible.

"Tyre management is out of the window so that is what is making it really difficult, I’m just doing 15 qualifying laps to try and keep them behind on a track where tyre management is important. It wasn’t easy but we managed to do it and I’m very happy with that."

On qualifying: "Do I feel pole is possible, I’m not sure but we will try our best and we will have a few ideas of what we want to do and try to be as close as possible to them."

The sun was out during that sprint race and it does look like qualifying will take place later in dry conditions too. Qualifying gets under way at 15:00 BST.

  19. 'Not a lot we can do on a day like today' - Norrispublished at 11:48 British Summer Time 26 July

Lando Norris finished in third in his McLaren. He said: "Not a lot going on, obviously a bit of fun at the start with trying to overtake Charles [Leclerc]. I maybe could have positioned myself a little better, but otherwise a bit too difficult to get past Max [Verstappen], he drove a good race."

"I wasn’t going to get past anyone unless Oscar [Piastri] got past Max, but they drove good races and not a lot we can do on a day like today, so I’m looking forward to tomorrow."

On the driver’s ahead: "It’s tough, I hope for a bit of a battling or something but the Red Bull is just too quick in the straight for us to catch up. Maybe some tweaks for us to make into qualifying but we will reassess and see what we can do."

On the race and potentially getting a third win in a row: "That’s the plan, I’m not too fused about sprint races but the main races I prefer to win so we will see. I wasn’t too bad yesterday I was still comfortable, but just a couple of things didn’t go my way."

"I’m still confident we can get a good result later and put in some good qualifying laps."
