Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon are aiming for Q3 appearances this weekend - will it happen? Spaniard Sainz is running in the top five in third practice thanks to his latest soft run, team-mate Albon is two places lower in seventh.

Will we see two Red Bull drivers on the podium in Saudi? It happened last year, and the year before that. But the task for new boy Yuki Tsunoda is tougher in 2025. He scored his first points with the team last weekend in Bahrain and now that his second practice crash is a memory, Tsunoda is down to eighth from fifth on the timesheets.

George Russell has basically taken over that number one role at Mercedes and he's had three podiums in five races, he's been doing a really solid job.

We are used to seeing Lewis Hamilton winning from the front but over the last three years we haven't seen that, and that can be quite damaging for him mentally.

Traffic will more than likely be an issue in qualifying and we've just got a little glimpse of what we could be in store for, as Oscar Piastri fumes, in his own laidback way, at Yuki Tsunoda, after the Japanese Red Bull driver blocked his latest push lap.

If you've got a bit of oversteer and the front end is quite reactive, I think that's the kind of balance that you want right now.

  7. McLaren showing pacepublished at 14:57 British Summer Time 19 April

This is the last dress rehearsal before qualifying, however, these daylight conditions will be swapped out for dark Saudi skies and cooler temperatures.

Another flyer on the softs for the McLaren boys sees them return to the summit of the timesheets. Oscar Piastri is once again quicker than his team-mate Lando Norris, this time it's by 0.158 seconds.

George Russell's first hot lap on the soft compound in the Mercedes places him sixth on the board.

The Ferraris get to the apex well but when they apply the power the rear tyres just say 'no thank you', and around the rear came.

That was really close to the wall for Lewis Hamilton, but even more so for Charles Leclerc.

Max Verstappen has emerged on his soft rubber and instantly flies to the top of the board, above the two McLarens, with a time of 1:29.077 in the Red Bull.

Up next is Charles Leclerc, who can beat the four-time word champion's marker by 0.255 seconds in the scarlet Ferrari despite a slight wobble at the final corner.

"Guys we really need to get rid of the drinks system. Like it's flying, I have water flying around my helmet. It's annoying."

There has been a lot of chat about drinks systems lately and now Isack Hadjar adds his name to the list. The Racing Bulls rookie tells his pit wall to just get rid of it completely because it's flailing all over the place.

That McLaren just looks so good in change of direction and in the higher speed corners at the moment, working beautifully underneath Oscar Piastri.

It's a McLaren one-two again in a practice session as Oscar Piastri shoots to the top of the board with a 1:29.118 on the soft compound. The Australian is followed by his team-mate Lando Norris, who is close to Piastri's time on the same tyre, but not close enough. The gap between the pair is 0.085.

What can Lewis Hamilton do in qualifying today? The seven-time world champion hasn't shied away from highlighting the difficulties of beginning a fresh journey with a new team, and after Friday practice, he said Saturday usually sees him go backwards. However, with the way he's feeling at the moment, there isn't any more 'backwards' he can go. He's on a set of softs early and is now fourth on the timesheets with a 1:30.367.

Meanwhile, Oliver Bearman is happy. "The front axle is way stronger than yesterday, which is a good thing," says the Haas driver.

  15. Norris tops standings but Piastri more impressivepublished at 14:45 British Summer Time 19 April

    Andrew Benson
    BBC F1 correspondent

At most races this year Oscar Piastri has been the slightly more impressive McLaren driver.

It's been quite a shift from last year when it was definitely Lando Norris who had the edge on pace, especially in qualifying.

Lewis Hamilton and Isack Hadjar have emerged on an out lap, just as Oliver Bearman crosses the line on a soft run to go top of the timesheets. The British teenager said this race last year, when he made his debut, was physically draining. But this season, being a bona fide F1 regular, he thinks he'll be a lot stronger. Bearman's time on the board is a 1:30.252.

  17. 'Piastri is driving sensationally'published at 14:41 British Summer Time 19 April

Oscar Piastri is super cool and he's driving sensationally. He's got massive confidence in the car in qualifying and that is absolutely key.

Those silver cool jackets are a winner over at Mercedes. George Russell has his on while he sits casually in the garage eating from his flask. I'm going to take a guess that's it's porridge in there - with added extras.

Aussie Jack Doohan has joined Gabriel Bortoleto on the timesheets with a 1:30.613 on the soft C5 rubber.

  19. Less important than FP2?published at 14:36 British Summer Time 19 April

    Sam Bird

Track temperatures at the moment are unrepresentative to what we are going to be seeing in qualifying, so this session probably doesn't mean as much as FP2, but it will still be interesting to see what everybody does.

No surprise to see Gabriel Bortoleto out bright and early, as Sauber have changed his chassis following yesterday's fuel leak. The Brazilian F2 champion is on a set of the medium compound and has clocked an opening 1:32.160, while the rest of the grid takes it easy in the garage.
