Jamaica still lead as Anastasia Le Roy hands over to anchor Stephanie McPherson. But what's this? Nigeria's Folashade Abugan goes round the bend like a train, briefly taking the lead down the back straight before riunning out of steam.

McPherson powers over the line to help Jamaica set a new Games record of 3.23.82. Nigeria take silver with England claiming a well-earned bronze as Anyika Onoura - a 200m specialist - shows her stamina.

The rain is making things more than a mite difficult at Hampden. The vaulters, frankly, are struggling to keep a grip of their poles as they thunder towards the pit. More than one aborted run up so far.

Switching back to the track quicker than a smooth baton changeover. England were the fastest qualifiers for this final and start with Olympic champion Christine Ohuruogu. She edges into a narrow lead after one circuit of the Hampden track.

The 2006 champion Phillips Idowu - who is sixth to jump - needed just one jump to reach the final. He has not cleared 17m since June 2012 but anything close to that should be enough for a medal. He is joined in the final by England team-mates Nathan Fox (10th to jump) and Nathan Douglas (12th).

Not a great start from the instantly recognisable Idowu, who has been pretty low profile since losing his funding last year. A big red cross is stuck next to his name after a failed first jump.

Lee Doran of Wales is the only Home Nations representative in the contest. Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad & Tobago and Julius Yego of Kenya - who learned to throw by watching YouTube apparently - will be the main challengers for gold. Walcott leads with a throw of 82.13 after two rounds.

    Nick Hope
    BBC Sport in Glasgow

"The great thing about the Commonwealths is the number of nations you see competing in events you wouldn't usually expect - like India here at the diving.

"The downside is that not all of them are really ready for competition on this level. Indian teenager Siddharth Pardeshi is a good example of that - literally scary to watch at times. Landed on his back twice in the prelims and his first dive has gone woefully wrong again in the final. 10m is a long way to fall!"

    Allison Curbishley
BBC athletics expert, on Radio 5 live

"James Magut wins gold, a surprise. Nick Willis from New Zealand has just finished like Usain Bolt in the home straight. I really feel for Chris O'Hare, he just ran out of legs despite the roar of the crowd and finished in sixth."

Boxing expert Steve Bunce: "Scott Fitzgerald has brought gold home from Glasgow. Five or six promoters will be reaching for their phones now. He is what we called gold dust in the professional circuit, he will sell out anywhere in the North West."

Chris O'Hare of Scotland makes a dash around the bend but he gives the rest too much of a start. Kenyans James Magut and Ronald Kwemoi, plus New Zealand's Nick Willis sprint out as O'Hare begins to blow hard. Too soon. Magut, Kwemoi and Willis take the medals in that order.

  13. Athleticspublished at 19:39 British Summer Time 2 August 2014

Magut, the 2010 silver medallist, is probably the favourite in this race, but Chris O'Hare and Charlie Grice, plus Wales' Chris Gowell, only need to look at Jo Pavey for inspiration. Lynsey's Sharp motto of "Get out strong, commit" is apt too.

Could there be a medal for Scotland's Chris O'Hare or Englishman Charlie Grice? They will be up against Kenyans James Magut and Ronald Kwemoi who will be strongly fancied for the top prize. These fellas are limbering up on the starting line. It's show-time.

    Denise Lewis
BBC Sport athletics expert & twice CWG champion

"It is so admirable and courageous when any athlete decides to carry on for long as Jo Pavey has. It is the grit, determination and things she has given up that make her such a popular figure in the team."

  16. Athleticspublished at 19:34 British Summer Time 2 August 2014

How a woman can balance having two kids with becoming a Commonwealth bronze medallist baffles me. Want to know Jo Pavey's secret? She revealed all about her hectic lifestyle as a mother and top-class athlete to BBC Sport ahead of Glasgow.

  17. Bronze Medalpublished at 19:32 British Summer Time 2 August 2014

New Zealand's women secure a 5-2 win over South Africa to claim a third-place finish.

South Africa held their own for the majority of the game but two quick second-half goals finished them off. It will be some consolation for the Kiwis, who lost in a penalty shoot-out to England in the semi-final.

    Paula Radcliffe
BBC Sport athletics expert & 2002 CWG champion

"That was brilliant. I am so, so pleased for Jo. She already has a Commonwealth silver I'm sure that one will mean the most to her. She worked hard for that. She injected some pace into that race and I'm sure she took a lot of energy from this crowd. They really got behind her. She just loves racing."
