Louis Smith might win gold in the Commonwealth Games face-gurning event with that grimace, but he could only get bronze in the men's pommel. I say only bronze because he is the reigning Olympic silver medallist. But after a fame-chasing sabbatical he has returned to prove he compete with the best. That gurn has changed to a beaming smile as he climbs on to the podium to collect his gong.

"It feels right that in front of a home crowd Dan Keatings produces that. He's had his ups and downs in the past few years, including missing out on London 2012, so it's great for him to get that gold. Because he was up before Whitlock and Smith he didn't have a benchmark to aim for and that really put the pressure on those two. It's a massive achievement for Dan because this wasn't just any old final, this was the one they all wanted."

"I think if you'd have asked most people who their money was on it wouldn't have been Dan Keatings, it would have been Max Whitlock or Louis Smith. Louis really upped his game, but Dan has just produced a brilliant effort."

"The gymnasts are almost as good as the judges and they all went and congratulated Dan Keatings straight away so they knew he had got the gold. Max was under pressure to nail his routine and it wasn't quite as good as what he's done. It's still good enough for Max to get silver, but Dan deserved that gold."

  5. Gold Medalpublished at 17:17 British Summer Time 31 July 2014

Three-time gold medallist Max Whitlock has enjoyed a dream Commonwealth Games so far, but it doesn't look as though the Englishman has done enough to sneak above Scotland's Dan Keatings. No he hasn't. Which means Keatings takes gold!

England claim silver and bronze through Max Whitlock and Louis Smith. Wales' Jac Davies is just nudged out of the medal placings into fourth.

Dan Purvis's effort wasn't as technically stretched as the others - and he pays the price with a score of 14.516. That puts him fourth and means England's Louis Smith is now guaranteed a medal. Shows how much I know....

"That was an impressive routine from Louis Smith, until right at the end. I was thinking 'how are the judges going to separate them' but he just lost his flow and paused before the finish. As expected, it's not quite enough to overhaul Daniel Keatings."

Louis Smith does go into second, behind Scotland's Dan Keatings, with a score of 14.966. That surely won't be enough with three top-class performers left, will it? He is helped by Zi Gan of Singapore not cutting the mustard. But with Scotland's Dan Purvis and England's Max Whitlock the last two left, they must be favourites to sneak into the top three.

Women's vault gold medallist Claudia Fragapane, who now has three gold medals, tells BBC Radio 5 live: "It's incredible to get another gold medal. Tomorrow is my last day of competing so I'll just go out there and see what happens, I've not thought about any more medals. I love being part of the team, we're all good friends and we all support each other. My mum and dad are over the moon as well."

Another Welshman, Jac Davies, completes his routine to a huge sigh of relief and leaps into second with a score of 14.800.

Now it is the turn of England's Louis Smith. The Olympic silver medallist smiles when he dismounts, but he loses his rhythm at the very end of an impressive routine. That isn't going to be a medal I'm afraid, Louis.

Six of the eight entrants are from the Home Nations, with Wales's Clinton Purnell second to go and racking up a score of 12.966.

Here comes Scotland's Dan Keatings. Plenty of flag-waving and happy clapping as Keatings lays down the gauntlet with an elegant and effortless performance. He gets a whopping score of 16.058 - just before the jaws of England pair Max Whitlock and Louis Smith drop to the floor. They've got plenty of hard work ahead if they want a medal.

Full marks for improvisation. Northern Irish squash player Michael Craig hits a backhand with his hand after losing his racquet.

Max Whitlock's scintillating floor routine lands the Englishman his third gold of the Games.

    And from last night?

Weightlifter David Katoatau wins Kiribati's first ever Commonwealth Games gold medal. If there was one for disco dancing he would have got their second.

Another medal for England as Louisa Porogovska wins her bronze-medal bout. But unfortunately for Scotland, it comes at their expense, with Kathryn Marsh being the beaten opponent.

While Louis Smith was shimmying his way to the Strictly Come Dancing crown, England's King of the Pommel Horse was deposed by Max Whitlock. Now Smith is desperate to boot Whitlock from his golden throne.

"There is definitely more to come," said Smith after helping England win team gold earlier this week. "In the pommel horse final I'm definitely going to step up the routine."

Olympic silver medallist Smith finished just 0.033 behind Whitlock, who has now won three golds in Glasgow, in qualifying. It's going to be tasty and it starts very shortly.

Hutchinson, 40, placed 12th in the men's road cycling time trial as Alex Dowsett won gold for England earlier today.

"Even when there's no gymnastics, there's plenty to keep you entertained at the Hydro. Three dancers are on the floor, captivating the audience with gravity-defying moves. 'Oohs' as the smallest of the three climbs to the top of the man-made tree and balances on one of the other dancer's leg. If only Simon Cowell was here, he'd probably sign them up."

Jamaicans attending the Games say they "understand" if Usain Bolt is frustrated, as he is "mobbed" everywhere.

Swimmer Jevon Atkinson and Jamaican High Commissioner Ndombet-Assamba told BBC Radio 5 live they "felt sad" he was unable to take 'selfies' with fans, embrace the culture and walk around Glasgow "like an ordinary person."

It comes after the Times newspaper reported that Bolt made disparaging remarks about the Games, something he disputed as "nonsense". "He's our Michael Jackson," Jevon said.
