Jack Laugher surely has one hand on the gold medal now as he produces another stellar dive to move onto a fifth-round total of 373.10, putting him almost 50 points clear of second-place Matt Mitcham (328.35). One dive remaining for the Englishman.

Ding ding, end of round one. England's Greg Rutherford is top of the pile after 8.12m, with Chris Tomlinson (7.95m) down in sixth.

Tomlinson stares down the track as he psyches up for his second effort. But he knows his foot is well over the red line and pulls up as he jogs into the sand. That was more long run than long jump.

"The diving venue here at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh can host around 2000 people and although there are still a few empty seats those who are here are certainly making as much noise as possible to cheer on the home nation athletes.

"It's certainly working for England's Jack Laugher who is clear in first with two dives remaining whilst team-mate Chris Mears is involved in a real battle for one of the other podium places with Australian duo Matthew Mitcham and Grant Nel."

England's Jack Laugher opens up a gap of almost 30 points with another fine dive, a score of 81.60 giving him fourth-round dive total of 296.60. He leads Australia's Matt Mitcham while Laugher's compatriot Chris Mears is in third.

Greg Rutherford has the honour of jumping first and powers past his qualifying mark with a leap of 8.12m. Decent benchmark by the Englishman in his first attempt.

Big rival Fabrice Lapierre, who won the Commonwealth crown in Delhi four years ago, responds with a seasonal best of a flat 8.00m.

Here's Chris Tomlinson. The Briton hits the board well but it is just short of Rutherford's mark. It's 7.95m for Tomlinson, pushing him into fourth midway through round one.

"Cool and blustery again this evening, with a brisk drenching just before competition got under way, but the early atmosphere already at full bore thanks to the men's long jump final. Both Englishmen, Chris Tomlinson and Olympic champion Greg Rutherford, are ranked in the top three in the Commonwealth this season; the furore over Rutherford's new British record of 8.51m back in April just adds another fistful of spice the rivalry."

"I am expecting explosions at Hampden tonight with Chris Tomlinson and Greg Rutherford battling out for the long jump. Greg's jumped the best in the world this year, and how will Chris respond to that? There is all the controversy over the British record as well. They are really going to battle it out and it's going to be ferocious this evening."

Sport is made by great rivalries and we have a bona fide duel in the sand pit tonight. English pair Greg Rutherford and Chris Tomlinson have had more spats over the years than a divorcing couple, but we are led to believe that they have kissed and made up., external

That won't stop either man being hell-bent on beating the other in the long jump final. Olympic champion Rutherford topped qualifying with a 8.05m leap in his first attempt, while Tomlinson - who was short of the automatic qualification mark of 7.90m - must improve if he is going to challenge his team-mate.

Jason Statham is probably not what you would call a versatile actor (he does gruff Cockney hardmen and, er, gruff Cockney hardmen only). But he was a versatile diver, external - competing in the 1m springboard, 3m springboard and the 10m platform.

Jack Laugher storms into the gold medal position with a superb third-round dive in the 1m springboard final. "Quite an odd layout here at the 'Royal Commonwealth pool' here in Edinburgh. If you're in the mix-zone - waiting for post-competition interviews (to the left of the picture) you can't actually watch the action, you have to go off a nearby TV screen. Can't help but feel that defeats the point a little..."

One man has emerged as the standout candidate for the gold medal, and it would be a huge surprise if Canada's Derek Drouin did not have that 100g chunk of gold hanging around his neck later. The 24-year-old is the Commonwealth record holder after jumping 2.40m for the first time in April.

Home Nations prospects? Slim. But English trio Tom Parsons, Martyn Bernard and Christopher Baker, plus Scotland's Raymond Bobrownicki are hopeful of gatecrashing the podium.
