The duo defeat Brian Kasirye and Edwin Ekiring 21-9, 21-5.

“It’s been a real journey since Rio 2016 & we’ve had injury problems but we feel we’re getting closer to our best,” Langridge tells me.

Ellis adds: "This is my first Commonwealths and I really want to come away with a medal - hopefully two and this is a good solid start today.”

    Men's artistic team final

Double Olympic champion Max Whitlock fronts a strong England team going for gold in the men's team final but Scotland hope to ruin the party.

The Scots finished runners-up to England in 2014 and that rivalry will still be apparent as the two are expected to battle it out for gold and silver.

Each nation will have between three and five gymnasts and their results are calculated by adding together the best three scores at each apparatus.

The top eight will also qualify for the individual finals.

More from Ben Proud on his disqualification from the 50m fly.

“Coming into the competition there is always apprehension ahead of the first race," said the Commonwealth record hold.

“With 10,000 fans in the crowd I wanted to give them something to cheer about by delivering a fast time.

“Unfortunately before the start signal I was judged to have moved my leg and the referee deemed this enough for a disqualification.

“I really wanted to come into the competition to retain both my titles and to have that opportunity taken away in the first heat is heart breaking.

“This has been four years of dedicated training and consistency – I feel I am in the shape of my life and am gutted to miss out on the opportunity to show what I can do. But the motivation is already there to come back in four years’ time and regain my title in the event I love.

“This is now in the past – all I can do now is support my team-mate Jacob. My focus is now fully on the 50m free.

“I would like to thank the team who helped ease me through this difficult situation.”

British Swimming confirm Ben Proud’s disqualification from the 50m fly has been upheld.

The Games record holder was judged to have started before the starting signal by an independent appeals panel.

Team England’s swimming team leader Grant Robins said in a statement: “Whilst this is incredible disappointing for Ben, the team and England we are all looking to move on quickly from this decision.

“We appreciate the time and focus dedicated to hearing our appeal, but Ben will now move his focus on to the 50m freestyle on Monday, and on the 17 English swimmers who are in semis and finals tonight.”

Australia are underway at the Gold Coast Hockey Centre, where I’d estimate around 3,000 fans are making some noise and brightening the stands in the green and gold.

Australia’s women have won four of the five Commonwealth Games hockey tournaments so while they’ve slipped below England and New Zealand in the rankings, they’ve clearly got that Aussie grit on the big stage.

Hats, inflatable kangaroos, flags and T-shirts simply saying “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie” are plentiful.

Canada are battling the crowd and the rankings given they are 21st in the world.

I caught up with Rio 2016 gold medal winner Laura Unsworth just now. She’s content with that display and also told me she’d still be warming up in her tracksuit top in order to fall in line with superstition. Who cares if it’s 30 degrees!

Commonwealth debutant Chloe Birch gives England an unassailable 3-0 lead vs Uganda in their opening mixed team fixture with a 21-12, 21-10 defeat of Shamim Bangi.

It follows earlier successes for the Adcocks and Rajiv Ouseph, with Olympic bronze medallists Chris Langridge and Marcus Ellis up on court next.

“I’m not going to lie I was a little bit nervous going out there today, as it was my first time at a Commonwealths,” Birch tells me.

“I’m really happy to play here and we are in great form as a team with great support from family and friends here and you can’t beat representing Team England!”
