    That was a messy fight but Scotland's Stephen Newns has scrapped his way into the quarter-finals with a unanimous points victory over Curlun Richardson of Anguilla.

    A tough, tough last round from 19-year-old Richardson who knew he had to find a knockout, but Newns stayed strong and all five judges scored him the winner.

    First up on the track today at the Anna Meares velodrome in Brisbane is the men's sprint qualifying.

    No medals will be decided, and there's not even a semi-final up for grabs. This one's all about determining the seedings for the knockout stage.

    Scotland's Callum Skinner and Jack Carlin, England's Joe Trueman, Ryan Owens and Philip Hindes and Welshman Lewis Oliva go in that.

    England's 2014 silver medallist Laura Massaro takes on Wales' Tesni Evans, who beat Massaro in December's World Championships, and then again in February when she became the first Welsh player to win the British title

    England's five second lead has evaporated as Jonny Brownlee comes out of the water. Australia's Matt Hauser has closed the gap impressively.

    This team triathlon is all action. It's much more fast-paced than the already exciting individual triathlon.

    Bronwlee is away on the bike. He's on the wheel of Hauser. It looks like a straight fight between England and Australia for gold. Their lead is 30 seconds now. Wales, Canada and New Zealand are in a three-man group battling for bronze.

    After a disappointing individual performance Wales' Non Stanford is bidding for a result here. She is racing this first leg for her team.

    The conditions are far better than in the men's race for this cycle. A couple of days ago the roads were soaking wet and slippery after some heavy rain but today it's bright blue sky. There's a bit of wind around though which will affect the swim.

    Wales' Stanford comes into the second transition - the transition between cycle and run - in third place but 26 seconds behind Australia and England who are out in front.

    But she keeps her head and gets the job done, 11-5 in the final game for a 3-1 progress to the semi-finals.

    The next boxer into the ring is Scottish champion Stephen Newns who came through a tough test on Thursday and now faces Curlun Richardson of Antigua at 04:32 BST.

    Then at 05:02, Northern Ireland's Aidan Walsh takes on Pakistan's Gul Zaib, with both seeking to secure a quarter-final place.
