Gold yet to sink in for Lastpublished at 08:40 British Summer Time 12 April 2018

    Women's cross-country

In the early hours of the morning, Annie Last and Evie Richards took gold and silver in the women's mountain bike - England's first ever Commonwealth Games medals in the event.

Speaking on BBC TV, Last said: "To finally get the gold at a major competition is amazing, it's such a good experience. It hasn't quite sunk in yet but i'm really happy with it."

Last and Richards broke from the rest of the field on the last lap, though it was not a pre-planned move.

"We didn't discuss it but in mountain bike racing we're happy to be together as you do push each other and go. Evie's young but she's a super strong athlete - I'm just so happy we were both up there."

For Richards, 21, watching Last at Glasgow 2014 served as inspiration:

"Four years ago at Glasgow it was Annie I was watching so to come and compete with her - it's a bit surreal really," she said.

Richards also added the worst part of it all had been caterpillars on the course - but Last was quick to point out that the burning pain in her legs was probably a contender...
