England's Katarina Johnson-Thompson has long been tipped for success on the global stage but is yet to taste major success in the heptathlon.

The 25-year-old Liverpudlian's global championship record consists of two fifth places at World Championships and a sixth at the Rio Olympics.

However, Johnson-Thompson won her first global title at the World Indoor Championships in the pentathlon last month and will be hoping that win in Birmingham and be a springboard to victory on the Gold Coast.

The heptathlon begins at 01:05 BST.

England's Robert Paxton narrows the gap to two points again - first to 21 for anyone just arriving. Then he claws another one back in end 11. Signs the 39-year-old, who skippered England to triples success in the 2016 World Championships, is getting in the zone?

    HT: South Africa 24 - 22 Uganda

South Africa opened up a six-goal lead as half time approached and looked to push on, but Uganda had other ideas and have clawed themselves back to within two.

Uganda won that second quarter 11-13.

The Proteas' previous best finish was fourth at Kuala Lumpur in 1998, while Uganda are playing in their debut Commonwealth Games.

The sun is peeking through a bit now in the Broadbeach Bowls Club. I hope Robert Paxton has some factor 50 in his holdall.

He's getting a little burnt on the rink, New Zealand opponent Shannon McIlroy extending his lead to three after end nine.

That double in the previous end has boosted Robert Paxton's confidence, the Englishman trying to outdraw the world champion in end eight.

However, McIlroy goes last and has the chance to skittle the jack into the ditch to nab a point. The Kiwi goes all Kingpin on us, blasting down his final wood to kick up the jack which hurdles the one behind and bounds off to the safety of the ditch.

What do we know about Robert Paxton then? He's 39. He's making his Games debut in the singles. And he's from Devon. Plays out of the Ilminster Bowling Club. Nice place Ilminster. Stayed there once on a football trip to Yeovil. Found a great pub with a cracking jukebox too, called it the Crown Inn if memory serves.

Anyway... we also know Paxton is up against it. He gives away another shot to Shannon McIlroy in the sixth end, before claiming a double of his own with a wonderful final shot in the seventh.

The Broadbeach Bowls Club looks a pleasant place to watch a morning's sport. Warmth of about 25C, a bit of cloud cover to help protect the head, a few R'n'B tunes pumping out from the DJ. Beats sitting in the office.

New Zealand's Shannon McIlroy claws back two of those points he lost in the previous end. He opens up a 6-3 lead after four ends.

    Q1: South Africa 13-9 Uganda

South Africa ended the first quarter with the momentum, but Uganda are still very much in touch.

She Cranes shooter Peace Proscovia has played every minute of Uganda's games in Australia, that court time looks to be catching up with her as she slumps onto the bench, burying her face in a towel, at the quarter-time break.

Can she dip into her reserves and lead her side's attack to victory?

No idea what's going on in the bowls? Here's a simple explainer:

The simple aim is to roll your bowls closer to the small ball known as the ‘jack’ than your opponent does. In singles, the winner is the first to reach 21 points.

Each athlete will use four bowls per end, alternating shots.

England's Robert Paxton gets things going in the opening end, but is soon put on the back foot by his Kiwi opponent Shannon McIlroy.

McIlroy takes an early 2-0 lead...
