Track Cycling - men's team sprint final

Comprehensive win for Australia. That's why they were the favourites. Stunning stuff.

Leigh Hoffman flew out of the traps, with Matthew Richardson maintaining the lead and Matthew Glaetzer taking the Aussie home in a new Commonwealth Games record time.

"They were in a different league," says Sir Chris Hoy.

Excellent effort from English trio Ryan Owens, Hamish Turnbull and Joe Truman but sometimes you've just got to hold your hands up and say the opponents were simply too good.

Here we go then... the last race of the day in the velodrome.

Deep breaths all round on the start line... three beeps... they're off!

The two teams in each three-lap race start on opposite sides of the track.

    Big night for Australia?

The swimming is about to get under way and the first night at the pool could be a big one for Australia. Olympic champion Ariarne Titmus is the overwhelming favourite in the women's 200m freestyle (19:25 BST) and Australia look like good bets in the men's 400m free and men's S9 100m backstroke too, while Zac Stubblety-Cook just set a world record in the men's 200m breaststroke to go with Olympic gold last year.

Australia picking up three or four of tonight's seven swimming gold medals isn't out of the question.

    Netball: Jamaica 38-22 Wales

Half-time at the NEC and Jamaica are really starting to stretch their legs in this match but Wales have not completely lost touch.

The Sunshine Girls held Wales to 10 goals in the second period and now have themselves a cushy 16 goal lead.

It was inevitable that the three-time Commonwealth medallists would eventually stretch a lead but there have been glimpses of quality from Wales, they'll already be looking forward to their match against Scotland on Sunday.

    Men's team sprint final

England may no longer have Jason Kenny as a rider but at least they have the seven-time Olympic champion as a coach.

And it feels like the English team - comprising of Ryan Owens, Hamish Turnbull and Joe Truman - will need all his expertise to help them beat Australia in the men's team sprint final.

Led by Matthew Glaetzer, who has previously won two World Championship and three Commonwealth golds, the Aussies are seen as the favourites to win gold.

Those two will join New Zealand on the podium after they won bronze by beating Canada.

Giarnni Regini-Moran then scores 13.150 for England and, with the best three scores added up, it is 41.600 overall and first place on the pommel horse!

That's first place in each of their first two rotations so far for England. Flying, with rings up next.

It is another good score for England on the pommel horse as Jake Jarman scores 13.100 but that is then topped by an excellent routine by Birmingham-born Joe Fraser, who scores a superb 14.650 and that prompts a huge roar from the crowd.

New Zealand win gold and Canada take silver.

    Max Whitlock
Six-time Olympic medal-winning gymnast on BBC TV

I am not going to beat around the bush, England are by far the favourites. They have had a few injuries just recently but they are still very strong.

You have got the home nations battle, with Wales looking very good and Scotland very strong as well. All those countries need to do is go clean and they will be in with a chance, but it will be tough to get second or third, there will be quite a few countries fighting for those medals.

England are onto their second piece of apparatus with the pommel horse and James Hall gets a big cheer from the home crowd as he begins his routine, which he nails at high difficulty to pick up a score of 13.800.

Pavel Karnejenko's score of 14.200 is a huge score! The second highest rings score of the day behind Sokratis Pilakouris (14.400).

With a 13.200 from Frank Baines to add to Cameron Lynn's 13, Scotland have the second highest team score on rings with 40.400.

Beautiful body shape from Pavel Karnejenko. very difficult strength routines which can get you big bonuses.

Super technique. Really very efficient indeed.

A very, very good bid there from Hamish Carter. Because he performs his gymnastics out in America, there’s a lot of crowds often. He’ll relish this opportunity because the atmosphere here is really quite something!

Wales holding their ownpublished at 18:21 British Summer Time 29 July 2022

    Netball: Jamaica 16-12 Wales

Wales are holding their own against Jamaica in the opening 15 minutes - much unlike the last time these two sides met at the 2006 Commonwealth Games when the Sunshine Girls thrashed Wales 74-21.

Jamaica have managed to eek out a 16-12 lead towards the end of the opening quarter, finding their six foot four shooter Jhaniele Fowler with growing ease under the post.

As we've already said it's a tough ask for this Welsh outfit but they are certainly putting one of the tournament favourites to the test so far.

Coming up shortly on the track, we have the women's team sprint finals where Wales take on Australia for the bronze medal.

After that, we'll have the men's finals, where there is another chance for England to win gold as Ryan Owens, Hamish Turnbull and Joe Truman face Australia.

I can see the English trio warming up on the rollers now. Australia set a new Commonwealth Games record in qualifying earlier so England will need to bring their A-game to win gold here.

    Thomas Duncan
BBC Scotland at the Lee Valley Velopark

There was something about the podium fist pump from Neil Fachie that told you just how hard earned this victory was.

Whether it's disruption to his training, a bout of illness, or a formidable Welsh pairing, nothing seems to get in the Aberdonian's way, even at 38.

"An incredible athlete," as Sir Chris Hoy put it.

    Gymnastics

Neon lights, strobe, banging dance soundtrack. Arena Birmingham turns into a sweatbox nightclub as the gymnasts switch between apparatus.

No sticky floors though. Not judging by the way the Cyprus team have soared into the vault.

You couldn't get that that sort of height and rotation with a decade's worth of spilled snakebite pulling you to earth.
