England are a goal up against Australia in the men's hockey semi-final after Phil Roper's effort.

Maddie Hinch has long been a hero for the women's team given her epic shootout showing to win Olympic gold in 2016, but it looks like England's Ollie Payne wants a bit of that action too.

He's been diving all over the place to keep six-time champions Australia out.

Scotland have now won 41 medals at Birmingham 2022 - eight gold, nine silver, and 24 bronze - and another three will be confirmed on Sunday after the boxing finals.

That will leave them level with the total reaped from Gold Coast four years ago, which was their highest return ever apart from Glasgow 2014.

Given this is a much younger, less experienced team - and the hush-hush expectation was somewhere between 30 and 40 medals - that's some effort.

What more can you say about Jacob Kiplimo. One Commonwealth title has opened the floodgates. He dominated that race, he didn't even touch the front until that final straight but then it was decisive.

He must have been tired but he recovered well and he waited and waited, took everything they threw at him and he was still able to respond.

England's Marc Scott finished fourth in that brutal race.

What a run by Jacob Kiplimo though. He's handed a phone by gentleman in the standsand he willingly leans in for a selfie before running off to celebrate with his adoring fans. Lovely stuff.

What a save from England goalkeeper Ollie Payne!

Australia whack the ball in off a penalty corner but the England keeper looks like he'd be at home in the gymnastics arena as he slides out his left leg to keep it at 0-0 in the men's hockey semi-final.

Scotland's Rory Stewart and Greg Lobban powered through to the squash men's doubles semi-finals with a 2-0 victory over Australia's Zac Alexander and Ryan Cuskelly.

The world silver medallists asserted their dominance early on, winning the opening game 11-2.

But they were made to fight hard in the second before clinching it 11-9, producing some fabulous squash to get over the line.

They will face the winners of tonight's final quarter-final between England's Adrian Waller and Darryl Selby and Canada's Nick Sachvie and David Baillargeon.

The 5,000m is absolutely gruelling, isn't it? The determination to run it is something else...

It's Kenya's Jacob Krop who is the head of the pack after the halfway stage.

Gold medallist Dan Goodfellow, speaking to BBC Sport: "It's a great feeling. I've had a bit of a rough year so to get a result here means everything. It feels nice to be able to do that dive under pressure as well as my last dive, because there has been plenty of times where I've dropped it. Just over the moon really."

On getting it for the individual event:

"It feels great. I'm really enjoying my diving at the minute and it feels nice to do it on my own. I'm really enjoying training by myself and doing the events by myself. All us boys are based up in Yorkshire so we couldn't ask anything better of a one-two-three of Yorkshire lads."

Jordan Houlden on backing up a bronze with a silver on his Commonwealth games debut:

"I'm really lost for words now. Two Commonwealth medals, it's a real big achievement for me. Coming out here, being my first Commonwealth Games, I feel like I've stepped up to the pressure and really given my all."

On competing with two Olympic medallists:

"Standing between two Olympic medallists - it's quite the team. It's sensational. Big dreams and hopefully I can get to the Olympics and be with these two guys."

It’s time for England to face Australia in the men’s hockey semi-final.

England’s women secured their place in the final yesterday, but it will be a tough task for the men to follow suit.

Australia have won every single Commonwealth hockey title there has been to win - six in total.

England, on the other hand, have never made it to a final.

Big performance needed from the crowd here. Oh, and the players of course.

Australia are going well, thanks to Talia McGrath and Beth Mooney.

They need 70 runs from 60 balls to set up a gold medal match against India.
