Right, time for us to wrap things up here.

I'll leave you with Andrew Benson's Spanish Grand Prix report and keep an eye on the Formula 1 page for more reaction to Max Verstappen colliding into George Russell.

    Goodbye!

Both Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc have been called to the stewards after making contact at the safety car restart.

That is due to take place at 16:50 BST.

  3. 'I prefer to speak about the race than just one single moment' - Verstappenpublished at 16:40 British Summer Time 1 June

Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who was handed a 10-second time penalty, was asked if his collision with George Russell intentional. He told Sky Sports: "Does it matter? I prefer to speak about the race than just one single moment.

"If there are any [drivers' title hopes], we are way too slow any way to fight for the title, I think that was clear again today.

"We tried to do a three-stop, I thought it was quite good and it was quite racy, and we also needed it because we had quite a bit of degradation on the tyres.

"I think that was good but unfortunately the safety car came out at the end and we basically ran out of tyres and the hard tyre was clearly not the right tyre.

"When you only have six laps to go everyone can go flat out and I was severely grip limited on the hard."

On pitting under the safety car: "We have to look at it again. Of course new tyres or at least fresh tyres do make a bit of a difference as well.

"I think no one really expected that the hard tyre was so poor, it may have been better to stay out yes, but that's of course a bit easier to say right now."

On the frustration going on in the car towards the end of the race and the shine being taken off him: "Is it? Well that's your opinion, we will leave it there."

  4. 'It felt deliberate in the moment' - Russellpublished at 16:36 British Summer Time 1 June

George Russell on whether the collision was intentional from Max Verstappen: "I mean I was as surprised as you guys were. I've seen the manoeuvres before on simulator games and go karting but never in F1. Ultimately we came home in P4 and he came home in P10. I don't know what was going through his mind. It felt deliberate in the moment so yeah it was a bit surprising.

On whether he was surprised that it is a 10-second penalty: "That's not my place to say. I'm not going to give it any thought. We have got our own problems to deal with, trying to make our car go faster, we were destined to finish in P4 today, ahead of Charles and behind Max. Obviously, the safety car shuffled that up.

"It is down to the stewards to decide if its deliberate or not. Max is such an amazing driver and so many people look up to him its a shame that something like that continues to occur, seems totally unnecessary and never seems to benefit himself."

On if he will get involved as GPDA chairman: "I mean I'm too close to give my opinion on behalf of the drivers. You see in Austin last year, [he made] some of the best moves ever, Mexico he lets himself down a bit. You go to Imola, one of the best moves that we've all seen in a long time and then this happens.

"It cost him and his team a lot of points. Charles and I dropped off, so he could have come back to fight for the podium.

"I'm not going to lose sleep we've got our own problems to deal with and that's making our car go faster."

  5. 'Never seen that in F1'published at 16:33 British Summer Time 1 June

Both George Russell and Max Verstappen have just finished speaking to the media, so we'll have their full reaction shortly.

Russell, however, says he's never seen such a move in F1 before.

"I was as surprised as you guys were," he said.

"I've seen those sort of manoeuvres before on simulator games and go-karting but never in F1."

Former F1 world champion Nico Rosberg on Sky Sports: "It looked like a very intentional retaliation. Wait for the opponent, go ramming into him, just like you felt the other guy rammed into you at Turn 1.

"That's something which is extremely unacceptable and I think the rules would be a black flag yes. If you wait for your opponent to bang into him, that's a black flag."

Max Verstappen was forced on to hard tyres for the final sprint to the flag and was involved in a series of incidents with Mercedes' George Russell.

Verstappen crossed the line fifth but dropped to 10th as a consequence of a 10-second penalty for causing a collision with Russell.

The four-time champion had kept the pressure on the McLarens with a three-stop strategy compared to their two, and was on course for third place before the safety car, caused when Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli pulled off with an engine failure.

But his race fell apart after Red Bull were forced to fit hard tyres to Verstappen's car because they had no softer ones available.

It left him lacking grip at the restart to those around him and resulted in a madcap, almost unbelievable, series of incidents.

Verstappen almost lost his car when he had a massive wobble coming out of the fast final corner as the race restarted with five laps to go.

Leclerc pulled alongside on the straight, and the two cars touched as the Ferrari moved back towards the racing line while still alongside Verstappen.

Russell then dived down the inside of Verstappen at Turn One, and the two made contact, the Red Bull taking to escape road and retaining the position.

Verstappen complained that Russell had pushed him off, but his engineer Giampiero Lambiase ordered him to give the position back, citing the rules on racing which say that a driver on the inside trying an overtaking move has the right to the corner if he is far enough alongside going in.

Verstappen appeared to move over to the inside and give space to Russell to pass him on the outside on the entry to Turn Four with two laps to go.

But as Russell went around him, Verstappen suddenly appeared back on the inside and speared into his car.

The Briton went on the radio to ask what was going on, and Verstappen was penalised for the incident.

We're waiting now for the drivers outside the top three to speak to the media, particularly to hear George Russell and Max Verstappen's thoughts on what happened towards the end of the race.

A word for Nico Hulkenberg as he secured a fantastic fifth place, having finished 16th in qualifying.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc speaking after he finished in third: "It was a battle for track position to get the slipstream from the guys in front. Max [Verstappen] wanted to bring me towards the inside where there was all the rubber, so I didn't want to go there. I was trying to push him to the left, there was a little bit of contact. Fortunately, for us there were no consequences.

"I'm really happy. Yesterday, I sacrificed quite a bit in qualifying to have better tyres for today. I didn't know whether it would pay off, in the end it did. I think P4 for us in a normal race would have been our position, with a safety car we got lucky and a podium. I'm really happy with that."

On Max Verstappen putting on hard tyres during the safety car: "When the engineers told me that Max was going on a hard tyre for the last stint, I was very optimistic because I knew how bad the hard was. That's when I knew I needed to have a good restart. Luckily, there was an opportunity."

  13. 'We gave it our best shot' - Norrispublished at 15:57 British Summer Time 1 June

McLaren's Lando Norris who finished second in Spain: "Oscar drove a very good race today. I didn't quite have the pace to match him. We gave it our best shot. It's a long race, anything could have happened at the end of the race.

"We both got pretty sideways with the safety car restart. It was a good, fun race and for us as a team to finish one-two is even better."

  14. 'It’s a lot of fun winning races at the moment' - Piastripublished at 15:54 British Summer Time 1 June

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri wins the Spanish Grand Prix: "It was a bit of a surprise to see Max Verstappen try a three-stop and it nearly worked for him, so yeah it was a great weekend overall though.

"The overall pace was really good and we could turn it on when we needed to and just very proud of the work we’ve done this weekend.

"It wasn’t the best first practice and then we got our stuff together, it’s a nice way to bounce back from Monaco, it’s been a superb weekend."

On it being the fifth win of the season: "Hard to complain, it has been a great year and this weekend has been exactly the kind of weekend I was looking for, we executed everything we needed to when it counted and that’s all we could ask for.

"The team gave me a great car once again, it’s a lot of fun winning races at the moment and I’ve been enjoying it and I hope the team are too."

On the restart: "My restart was OK from a time point of view, I’m not sure my rear tyres were very happy though, I think I was wheel-spinning in sixth gear so not the cleanest of restarts but it was good enough.

"Just getting used to how much grip there was on low fuel, it was like being back in qualifying so that was a bit of an adjustment, but very well managed."

Ed Franklin: Obviously Verstappen should get DQ and points on his SL. Suspect the stewards will bottle it.

Stuart Mitchell: How the **** does Max only get a 10sec time penalty for that??

Pete Chambers: How is that a 10 second penalty?? That's a disqualification if I've ever seen one.

  19. Postpublished at 15:42 British Summer Time 1 June

The old "well that escalated quickly" meme would be very relevant for Max Verstappen's race there.

He was in the picture for possibly a race win, certainly a podium, and then after the safety car it rapidly unravelled as he collided with George Russell, finished 10th and got a time penalty.

It isn't going to be the last we hear of that.
