Erik Compton is back in the clubhouse. Well, if you want to be technical he's talking on television about his round but, nevertheless, I was going to say the American is tied for second on -3 for the tournament.

It's a colourful third-round card for the American - five birdies, four bogeys and an eagle - as he ends with a three-under-par 67.

Ian Poulter, external: Disappointed with this outcome of today's round. But playing great. Golf course is much playing as tough as it is now. Great set-up.

A double bogey for Kevin Na on the 14th and from -4 to -2 he goes, which means Martin Kaymer still enjoys a five-shot lead at the top of the leaderboard.

  4. Bogey for Kaymerpublished at 23:36 British Summer Time 14 June 2014

A first bogey on the back nine for Martin Kaymer who drops to -8 overall. And things aren't going well for Kevin Na, who undercooks his chip on the 14th. The American, hand on his hips in disbelief, misses the chance to turn the screw and put Kaymer under pressure.

Phil Mickelson retained his sense of humour despite seeing his bid for a first US Open after six runner-up spots disappear in the third round at Pinehurst. The left-hander, hunting the final leg of the career Grand Slam of all four major titles, carded a 72 to end five over. Only Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods have won all four majors.

Asked how he will approach Sunday's final round, Mickelson replied: "If I play well tomorrow, if I hit it better and make some putts, I think I can shoot four or five under, end around even par and finish second again,"

"Let me make a prediction, I think Kaymer will win, but I think someone will get within one shot of him at some point."

Justin Rose on Twitter:, external Had a great tee time today! 1:13.... Just in time to watch football! C'mon England!

Rose is one over par, 10 adrift of the lead, and the silver lining in his cloud, external is that the defending champion can now allow himself to watch England's match with Italy, which is currently goalless. That's a World Cup match, by the way. In Brazil.

Rory McIlroy, on +3 overall, escapes from the 16th with a par, which the Northern Irishman will be happy about considering he had found the bunker from the fairway.

Adam Scott is hurtling down the leaderboard quicker than a downhill skier with jet-propelled skis. Bogeys on the 15th and 16th leaves the world number one +3 for the round and the tournament.

South Korean-born American Kevin Na cuts something of a controversial figure in the world of golf. Known as one of the slowest players on the circuit, the 30-year-old has a reputation for constantly backing off shots, though he insists he is trying to address his issues.

He is also the not-so-proud owner of the worst score on a par four on the PGA Tour - a 16 at the ninth hole of the Valero Texas Open in 2011. Going alright at Pinehurst, though - no timing issues and he's second at four under.

Just 10 players are under par overall with plenty of chopping and changing underneath Martin Kaymer on the leaderboard. And speaking of the German, he saves par with a three-foot putt on the 12th. On the 13th, Kevin Na falls to his knees as he watches his putt for birdie lip out.

From 'native land' to the green and Martin Kaymer has managed another moment of escapology Harry Houdini would have been proud of. The German getting himself out of trouble on the 12th courtesy of a dollop of derring-do.

Matthew Fitzpatrick is the only amateur in the field and the English teenager carded an eight-over-par 78 in the third round.

"It was tough. A couple of tees are forward and couple are back. I didn't play too well but at the same time I didn't feel like I had any luck," the 19-year-old tells BBC Radio 5 live sports extra.

"I wouldn't say it's noticeably harder but the wind has completely changed direction. How Martin Kaymer has got to 10 under I will never know. It's pretty impressive golf."

Henrik Stenson with a birdie sniff on the 15th... he could be joining Kevin Na on -4... but oof the Swede misses and he will have to keep Erik Compton and Rickie Fowler company on -3.

It's a good day at the office for Rickie Fowler as the 25-year-old concludes his round with a par on the 18th for a three-under-par 67, which is the lowest round of the day. Rickie Fowler removes his cap to reveal he has tamed his eyebrows! Well I never.

  18. Beware of the 11th Martinpublished at 22:57 British Summer Time 14 June 2014

Virtually unshakeable so far, Martin Kaymer is home and hosed in the eyes of many, but where, if anywhere, are his challenges from here on in?

The 11th hole at Pinehurst is the fourth hardest on the course this week. Of 781 birdies in a almost three rounds, only 22 have arrived on the par four drag.

With a steep fall off to the side of the green, iron shots are being punished. It is averaging 4.33 strokes. Kaymer has walked away from it with two pars so far.

  20. Birdie for Comptonpublished at 22:53 British Summer Time 14 June 2014

Beautiful from Ian Poulter, chipping in at the 16th to jump back to +4 for the tournament. He's still got it. And that man Erik Compton is at it again. A birdie at the 15th and he's back at -4!
