  1. Closing time

And that's your lot for day two of the Cricket World Cup. Thanks for being with us.

Two more games down and more dazzling displays from some of the world's biggest names.

David Miller and JP Duminy broke a record as South Africa beat Zimbabwe by 62 runs in Hamilton.

While in Adelaide, it was India who took the bragging rights over rivals Pakistan with a 76-run win.

    Umesh Yadav

Don't forget, the action continues later today. Join us for West Indies against Ireland from Nelson in New Zealand from around 21:30 GMT.

  2. Join the debate at #bbccricket

Jay: All the teams winning so far have scored 300 or more and more importantly, have batted first. England take note.

  3. 'This was for the India fans'

More from Virat Kohli on India's win and his century: "My role in the team is to bat through and let the power hitters around come in and play their shots.

"I really commend the way Suresh Raina and Shikhar Dhawan played today to help us get to the score we did.

"It's also a huge thank you to the fans. Their support was fantastic and the atmosphere today electric, so this is for them as well."

    Virat Kohli
  4. Captain's view

India captain MS Dhoni: "It was a very good performance, started by the batsmen. It's needed here to put runs on the board and give the bowlers the cushion of that extra 20 runs.

"Over here the first 10 overs aren't that easy and the ball varies in pace and bounce.

"It was important to get a long partnership early on and then Raina and Kohli capitalised late on.

"I felt all the boys had a good performance with the bat and the ball and that's very important at the start of a long World Cup."

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"Pakistan have a lot to do to improve. Only one bowler showed pace, and the rest need to be more disciplined. India are a force to be reckoned with because they'll always have strong batting. Ashwin bowled well today, he turned it when the Pakistan slow bowlers couldn't."

  6. Captain's view

Pakistan skipper Misbah-ul-Haq: "They played well, posted a good total and bowled well. When we lost wickets in the middle it made it hard.

"The pitch was very good, and our bowlers pulled them back well in the last 10 overs. They might have scored more. Two or three of our batsmen didn't get in and you can't say much about that.

"Now we have to look forward, we can't think about this game and not concentrate on the next ones. We need our confidence and momentum back."

    Misbah-ul-Haq

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"Pakistan never really got in the game with the bat. Their openers were kept in check by the Indian bowlers, who bowled a really disciplined line. They squeezed the pressure and then the dam burst and the wickets came. There was a huge collapse in the middle and the game was over before it was over."

  8. The biggest game...

BBC Monitoring's Vikas Pandey: "More proof that Indians are treating this match like a World Cup final. Hashtag #RealFinal is now trending on Twitter."

  9. Player reaction

Virat Kohli on his man of the match award: "It's probably one of the biggest honours I've ever had in my career.

"A real important game for us to kick off the World Cup. It's a high pressure game against Pakistan, so it's huge to get a win.

"Expectations are going to be there when you do well for your country and I like it and the pressure."

  10. Post update

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"The crowd were 90% in favour of India and it was a canter for their side. Pakistan didn't have the firepower in spin or seam to stop India getting runs. Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli found it easy to score runs - they got to 150 without breaking sweat. Then the fireworks came from Suresh Raina, who is a great talent, he is amazing and he smashes it everywhere."

"India won in a manner which shows they were well prepared for this game. They got their head around which was the right line-up to field on this pitch at Adelaide. The two spinners did an excellent job and the wickets were shared between the group."

  14. India beat Pakistan by 76 runs

    Sohail Khan c Yadav b M Sharma 7 (Pak 224)

It's all over and India have won by 76 runs. Sohail Khan is the last man to go as he hits one high in the air and Yadav takes a simple catch at mid-on.

  15. Pak 220-9 (Shami 4-35 off 9 overs)

Had Misbah got to a century, unbelievably it would have been his first in 157 ODIs. His highest score is 96 not out in all that time. Mohammad Irfan is last man in for Pakistan.

  16. Post update

    Tim Nielsen

Former Australia coach on BBC Test Match Special

"The bowler and captain were clear in what they wanted to do. They have shown a lot of confidence in themselves, Shami came round the wicket and dug it in short and the ball hurried onto Misbah and looped to mid-on. Good execution from the bowling group."

  17. WICKET

    Misbah c Rahane b Shami 76 (Pak 220-9)

Sadly for Pakistan the one Misbah they do have is finally out. He goes for a pull shot from a short ball from Shami, but swats it to wide mid-on where Rahane snaffles it. Almost done here.

Sohail Khan keeps his mouth shut after that little episode and lets his bat do the talking with a clubbed pull for four off Yadav. That's Yadav done for the day with figures of 2-50.

  20. Post update

    Tim Nielsen

Former Australia coach on BBC Test Match Special

"I think there must have been a few words between Kohli and the batsman. At the start of Kohli's innings, Sohail Khan got right in Virat's face so maybe he was returning the favour."

  21. Pak 215-8 (need 86 to win off 36 balls)

Seems to be getting heated out there despite the game being dead as a contest. Sohail Khan seems to have something to say for himself and then Virat Kohli gets the crowd going by waving his hands in the air. Misbah, meanwhile, isn't bothered by all that and just decides to hit Jadeja for three consecutive fours to move to 76.

  23. Pak 203-8 (Target 301)

Mohit Sharma almost accounted for Yasir the ball before as a pull shot went out to deep square leg. Shami came running in to try and grab it, but couldn't quite cling on with his dive. Sohail Khan is the new man in at 10.

  24. Post update

    Tim Nielsen

Former Australia coach on BBC Test Match Special

"He hit that one firmly - it was right out of the middle of the bat without the elevation he was looking for and Yadav took the catch right in front of the India logo on his shirt."

  25. WICKET

    Yasir c Yadav b M Sharma 13 (Pak 203-8)

Eighth wicket down for Pakistan as Yasir Shah tries to smash Mohit Sharma past mid-on. He doesn't get it wide enough though and Yadav takes the simple catch without having to move an inch.

"Ashwin has been excellent tonight, he's changed his pace nicely. It's usual for a spinner to up their pace, but Ashwin has done nicely because he's taken pace off the ball. He's got the ball to grip, has taken a wicket and delivered three maidens. India will be very happy about that."

  27. Pak 200-7 (Target 301)

Yasir Shah opens his boundary account as he fetches one from outside off stump and slog sweeps Ashwin for four. Could be some vital fantasy team points up for grabs here in the closing overs. Sadly the real contest in the middle is going down a somewhat predictable path to an India win.

  28. Pak 196-7 (need 105 to win off 54 balls)

Pakistan will want to finish strong here with an eye on the net run rate in Pool B. They'll finish some way short of victory today, but in the long-term they'll be conscious not to suffer a drubbing. Yadav completes a ninth over with just two runs from it.

  29. Post update

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

  32. What you may have missed...

If you've just joining us this morning, let us fill you in:

South Africa, one of the pre-tournament favourites to lift the World Cup, beat Zimbabwe by 62 runs in Hamilton in Pool B.

They defended a total of 339-4 which featured an ODI record fifth-wicket stand of 256 between David Miller (138 off 92 balls) and JP Duminy (115 off 100).

In Adelaide, and also in Pool B, defending champions India are closing in on victory over neighbours and rivals Pakistan...

  33. Pak 188-7 (Yadav 8-0-43-2)

For the first time today, there's a noticeable hush in the Adelaide Oval crowd. A sign that the fizz has gone well and truly out of the contest. Umesh Yadav continues his steady display with the ball, conceding just four singles.

  34. Post update

    Geoffrey Boycott

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"The Pakistan batting collapsed too easily. They were doing reasonably well but then they suddenly lost concentration and discipline. The bowling could be better too. Without raising a gallop, India were allowed to hit the ball into gaps for ones and twos."

  35. Pak 184-7 (need 117 to win off 72 balls)

Jadeja back on and in to his eighth over. Little of note to report as the game goes through the motions somewhat.

  36. Post update

    Jonathan Agnew

BBC Test Match Special in Adelaide

"There's not quite a feel of celebration about Misbah's half-century like there was when Virat Kohli reached his 100. But while there's Misbah, there's hope I suppose."

  37. Pak 181-7 (Misbah 55, Yasir 2)

Shami comes in for some punishment from Misbah this time, who hammers four down the ground and then takes a couple to bring up his 50. A muted celebration, but he's reached the landmark off 55 balls with four fours and a six. Again, he shows his strength off his legs with another four from a full toss.

  38. 'Better than winning the World Cup'

BBC Monitoring's Vikas Pandey: Fireworks are getting louder in Delhi, and Twitter and Facebook have exploded with comments. For the enthusiastic Indian fan, Dhoni's men have already won the match. I can sense that people are getting ready for celebrations on Delhi's streets. Just heard this comment: 'Winning against Pakistan is as good as winning the World Cup.'

  39. Pak 169-7 (Misbah 44, Yasir 1)

Misbah's not done yet as he slog-sweeps Ashwin for six in defiant fashion. Stands and admires his shot afterwards. He turns down a single next ball though, presumably to protect his new partner Yasir Shah. A couple more singles before Misbah cuts a short and wide one away for four more.

Boom Boom Afridi takes a big swing at a full toss from Shami and it's high in to the air out to point. Kohli takes the catch running round and the all-rounder has to go. Umpires pause for a second to see if the ball is above waist height, but they're happy it's legal.

  46. Pak 149-5 (Target 301)

Is this the start of the Pakistan counter-attack? Misbah backs away and smashes Yadav for four through the covers. He picks up another boundary as he whips a full toss off his legs. The public address system announces the crowd is more than 41,500. And they've made some noise it's fair to say.

  47. Pak 139-5 (Misbah 21, Afridi 21)

I remember Franklyn Stephenson in the latter part of his career, playing for Sussex in that classic Natwest final against Warwickshire in 1993. Back in Adelaide, more shuffling of the pack from Dhoni with his bowlers sees Mohammed Shami back on. Pakistan meanwhile choose to take the batting powerplay early. Misbah and Afridi can't force the issue though as the required rate hovers around nine-and-a-half an over. With that, it's time for drinks.

  48. Post update

    Jonathan Agnew

BBC Test Match Special in Adelaide

"The best exponent of the slower ball I've seen was Franklyn Stephenson. He'd come bounding in all arms and legs and with a big smile and the ball wouldn't arrive. He had possibly the biggest smile of anybody I've ever known, a lovely man. Chris Cairns had a good slower ball too."

  49. Pak 137-5 (need 164 to win off 108 balls)

Jadeja comes on to replace Ashwin as Dhoni continues this trial by spin from the Northern End. Just three runs off the over and the required rate continues to climb.

  50. Pak 134-5 (req rate 8.78)

The figure of former England coach Duncan Fletcher is seen on television screens looking content in the India changing room. He's in the background behind Ravi Shastri, the man who has assumed more front-of-house coaching duties in the last year or so. His influence has certainly given India an added dimension. Back on the field, Mohit Sharma continues to be precise, conceding just two runs.

The Adelaide Oval's floodlights are burning brightly now as they take over from the natural light. It all adds to this sense of occasion which is emanating from every single feature of this match. It couldn't be more handily poised, with Ahmed Shehzad and Haris Sohail bringing up their half-century partnership after that early loss of Younus Khan. Shehzad appears to have decided to take on the bowling as he plunders four through mid-off then bags a couple through a similar area.

"JP and I kept encouraging each other along the way and we knew how important this partnership was to the team. There are a lot of positives I can take in how I constructed this innings, especially when rotating the strike with the spinners on. I've been working hard on that part of my game."

    Zimbabwe 277 all out

All over in Hamilton! Zimbabwe huffed and puffed in a credible display, but ultimately South Africa's quality with both bat and ball shone through.

Unfancied Zimbabwe had their illustrious opponents rattled at 83-4, before David Miller (138*) and JP Duminy (115*) shared a record fifth-wicket stand of 256 in a total of 339-4.

Zimbabwe made an encouraging start to their chase through Chamu Chibhabha and Hamilton Masakadza, who took them to 137-1. However, they ran out of steam and lost a flurry of wickets in the final 15 overs.

  104. Pak 44-1 (required run-rate: 6.11)

What is it about left-handed batsmen? They tend to be far more elegant than their right-handed equivalents, don't they? Haris Sohail is playing some stonking drives through the off side. Ahmed Shehzad gets in on the act too, hooking Mo Shami for four. That seems to impress a fella dressed as the Incredible Hulk in the crowd. Or is it the real David Banner? We'll never know underneath that mask.

  105. Pak 39-1 (Shehzad 6, Haris 21)

There are some wholehearted bowlers in this India line-up. Mohit Sharma is in the mould of Mo Shami as he bursts to the crease and, front on, delivers a heavy ball. The right-arm paceman, who is playing only his 13th ODI, begins with a no-ball and the subsequent free hit is unceremoniously smashed for two by Haris Sohail, who ends the over with a silky cover drive which brings another couple.

There's a lot to like about Haris Sohail. Standing upright and back in his crease, he is middling some gorgeous strokes through the off side. He has a very classical technique. Mo Shami is steaming in from round the wicket and he is getting the white ball to nip past the outside edge every now and again. And there's drama at the end of the over when a mix up in the field prevents Sohail being run out. Six from the over.

  108. More what you may have missed...

In Hamilton, South Africa are closing in on victory over Zimbabwe, although it's not been as straightforward as you might think.

David Miller's unbeaten 138 off 92 balls and JP Duminy's 115 not out - in an ODI fifth-wicket record stand of 256 - propelled the Proteas to 339-4. Zimbabwe were 191-2 before Hamilton Masakadza's departure for 80 signalled the beginning of the end of their hopes.

"The match is really in the balance now. If Pakistan can keep India to 280, they will fancy their chances of chasing it down. But there's enough batting left for India to put their foot down and go quickly."

  170. Ind 213-2 (50 partnership off 56 balls)

Virat Kohli moves in to the 90s as he glances Mohammad Irfan for four from a loose delivery. Pakistan have done a good job so far off keeping this powerplay tight, but Irfan shows some sloppiness as he sends down a wide with a short ball to Raina. Up comes the 50 partnership between Kohli and Raina.

    Mohammad Irfan
  171. Ind 206-2 (Kohli 87, Raina 27)

Suresh Raina opens his shoulders and clubs Wahab Riaz over long-on for four. A dismissive stroke and the first boundary in the powerplay. Virat Kohli meanwhile, looks a bit becalmed and hasn't seen a lot of the strike in the last few overs.

  175. Ind 200-2 (run rate 5.41)

Mohammad Irfan is brought back in to the attack. From the opposite end to where Ian Gould gave him two warnings earlier for running on the pitch in his follow through. He comes round the wicket and Raina pulls a short ball for a single to bring up the 200 off the final ball.

  177. Ind 196-2 (Kohli 85, Raina 19)

Wahab Riaz is back on to bowl as Misbah-ul-Haq abandons his spin at both ends approach. Worth reminding you we're now in the mandatory batting powerplay, which might have influenced his thinking. Four singles off the left-armer's return over.

  178. Ind 192-2 (run rate 5.49)

Shahid Afridi rattles through another over, which only goes for two runs. India captain MS Dhoni sits waiting expectantly in the dug-out to come in, perhaps at the fall of the next wicket.

Looking like they're on a mission these two to up the ante. Could be a painful few overs here for Pakistan.

  181. Six from Suresh Raina

    Ind 186-2

Big pull shot from the left-hander off Haris Sohail, but Yasir Shah almost takes a spectacular one-hander on the fence. He can't cling on though and tips it over the rope.

  182. Ind 181-2 (run rate 5.48)

  184. South Africa v Zimbabwe

    Zimbabwe 50-1 (9 overs) - target 340

Zimbabwe's spirited reply continues, despite the underdogs losing Sikandar Raza in the seventh over. Raza's feet looked like they had been planted in quicksand as Vernon Philander's delivery whizzed past his eyeline and sent the stumps scattering.

But Chamu Chibhabha is still sending the white ball scuttling towards the boundary rope, leaving Zimbabwe's scorecard looking far healthier than South Africa's did at the same stage.

  185. Ind 173-2 (Kohli 76, Raina 5)

We're rattling through these overs now with spin from both ends. Looks like a drop from Umar Akmal behind the stumps off Haris Sohail as an outside edge from Kohli bounces around his gloves without ever settling. Big chance!

Thanks Marc, it's been an intriguing contest this so far. Very watchable. The big man Mohammed Irfan gets two warnings from umpire Ian Gould for following through in the danger area. Mohammad Irfan is about as athletic in the field as my gran, but he's a threat with the ball and Pakistan bring him back into the attack as they strive to break this partnership which is now worth 93 runs.

Rohit Sharma cracked 264 in a 50-over game at the back end of last year, and I don't think he played one loose shot. He's so correct in his technique and he has Swiss watch-style timing - emphasised when he clips Irfan through midwicket and to the boundary.

That prompts the big man to go round the wicket. The umpire must think there's a herd of elephants behind him when this man mountain runs up to the wicket.

Another boundary for Rohit, this time through the off side, makes it eight from the over.

It's a steady start from India, who are yet to find the boundary. Dhawan is a lucky boy when the extra bounce sees him spoon a catch towards gully but there's nobody there to snaffle it. It's as though Irfan is bowling with a child's bouncy ball.

We've not seen many boundaries from David Miller and JP Duminy, instead the pair precisely nudging ones and twos as South Africa steadied the ship following that earlier wobble. But the big-hitting Miller sniffs out a massive six - to the delight of the Hamilton crowd - before reaching his half-century a few moments later.

Miller and Duminy soon reach another landmark, passing their 100 partnership from 115 balls in the next over. South Africa are now 193-4 after 40 overs as Duminy also reaches his half-century.

  295. SA 121-4 (Miller 14*, Duminy 22*)

Raza, having bowled three unthreatening overs for 19, comes off as Zimbabwe turn back to Solomon Mire who took 0-11 from two overs as first change earlier. He fires in another legside wide before Duminy carves a two to deep point and pushes a quick single wide of mid-off. More ones and twos extend this partnership to 38 - with Duminy having dominated his partner since he came in.

  296. SA 114-4

They've made a terrific start, no doubt about that, but at what stage should Zimbabwe attempt to go for the jugular again? This pair are starting to look comfortable for South Africa, and with plenty of overs in hand, they're still more than capable of posting a commanding total - and at the moment, Zimbabwe's spinners are virtually gifting them 4-6 runs per over. As if to prove my point, five singles are taken from Kamungozi's fourth over.

  297. SA 109-4 (Miller 21*, Duminy 14*)

More middle-over accumulation as Duminy and Miller continue to knock Raza around Seddon Park for ones and twos with little trouble. Seven from the over picks the scoring rate up a little.

  299. SA 102-4

We're used to much quicker scoring rates from South Africa, but they belatedly take their score into three figures just before the halfway point of the innings as Miller pushes Kamungozi for two. It looks as though Chatara may be getting ready for a second bowling spell. Miller moves to 19 from 25 balls with a single, a delicate Duminy dab to third man takes him to nine from 16.

  300. SA 98-4 (Miller 16*, Duminy 8*)

As Zimbabwe try to hustle through a few overs of part-time spin in the middle overs, South Africa are equally trying to hustle through for any available ones and twos, though the boundaries have dried up again.

  301. SA 90-4

Kamungozi - who will definitely be worth a place alongside West Indies' Andre Russell in the World Cup Mohicans XI - isn't getting much turn but with South Africa needing to rebuild, he's quickly through his over for the cost of only two runs.

  302. SA 88-4 (Miller 13*, Duminy 2*)

Zimbabwe turn to opening batsman Sikandar Raza, a part-time off-spinner, as their seventh bowler. South Africa plunder four singles - I mentioned their deep battling line-up before the game, they may well need it today.

  303. SA 84-4

Two left-handers in to face the leggie as JP Duminy joins David Miller at the crease. Kamungozi, sporting a mohican-style haircut, is quickly through the rest of his over, just a single from it. Who'd have predicted this?

We saw some terrific catches yesterday (including one in the crowd), but that was right up there with them. A great moment for leg-spinner Tafadzawa Kamungozi, it was only his second delivery.

    Scorecard

  306. SA 83-3 (De Villiers 25*, Miller 10*)

Williams rattles through his third over, three singles from it.

Meanwhile, in the women's ODI, England have dismissed NZ captain Suzie Bates for 39 - New Zealand are 66-1 after 14 overs in reply to England's 217-9.

  307. SA 80-3

Sloppy from Cap'n Chigumbura, he starts the over with a no-ball which De Villiers helps away for a single. That means Miller to face the free-hit ball... which is a knee-high full toss, and the left-hander gratefully whacks it over cow corner for six.

  308. SA 72-3 (De Villiers 22*, Miller 3*)

Left-hander David Miller is the new batsman, he's more used to coming in at 250-3 with licence to blaze away in the last few overs rather than having to come in with less than 70 on the board and help rebuild an innings. A familiar face to Yorkshire fans from a couple of stints of T20 blasting, Miller is off the mark with a single off his first ball. De Villiers takes some easy singles against Williams's left-arm spin - how South Africa could do with one of his record-breaking centuries now.

Zimbabwe, let's be honest, would have bitten your hand off if you'd offered them 59-2 at drinks after they'd won the toss. While Faf du Plessis and AB de Villiers are taking singles at will, there's not been a boundary since the seventh over... but Du Plessis ends that particular drought with a lofted six over long-off.

  312. Drinks break

SA 59-2 (Du Plessis 17*, De Villiers 19*)

Our first sight of spin today as Williams is off after two overs, replaced by slow left-armer Sean Williams. Four singles from the over, and the players have earned some drinks.

  313. SA 55-2

Zimbabwe's radar is still leaving a little to be desired here, Chigumbura fires in the fifth wide of the innings - no mucking around, these are proper legside wides. De Villiers is moving up through the gears, taking singles at will - Du Plessis is playing the supporting role to his skipper, though their speed between the wickets bring them a well-run two to long leg off the last ball.

  315. SA 48-2 (Du Plessis 11*, De Villiers 15*)

Steady bowling from Mire, steady progress from South Africa, though Zimbabwe have posted a man out at long-on. Four singles and a two from the over, while Mire adds a wide to the score. There are plenty of Zimbabwe fans in the ground, and some are showing off their dancing skills.

  316. NZ v England women update

New Zealand are flying as they chase a target of 218 to beat England in the third women's one-day international. The White Ferns are 47-0 after eight overs in Tauranga.

  317. SA 41-2

Captain Elton Chigumbura - briefly an overseas signing at Northants a couple of years ago - brings himself into the attack as Zimbabwe's fourth right-arm seamer. More careful accumulation from the Proteas third-wicket pair, but when Chigumbura drags it down too short, De Villiers swats him for four through mid-wicket, earning himself a burst of "Smooth Operator" by Sade over the ground PA system. A single takes ABDV to 13 from 19 balls - positively tortoise-like by his own high standards...

  318. SA 34-2 (Du Plessis 6*, De Villiers 8*)

Zimbabwe make their first bowling change and turn to the medium pace of Solomon Mire - apparently pronounced "Mirr-ray" - in place of Chatara. South Africa find easier pickings against him, with De Villiers and Du Plessis picking up some ones and twos.

If you're just joining us, I can assure you the scorecard is working perfectly - South Africa are two down, for not many, against Zimbabwe. Yes, Zimbabwe. Du Plessis dabs a single, and De Villiers - having played himself in for eight dot balls - comes down the track and effortlessly lifts Chatara for six over long-off to get off the mark. Which, when you're as naturally talented as ABDV... is probably the completely logical thing to do.

Chatara, emboldened after coming close to dismissing one of the best batsmen in the world, seems to find an extra yard of pace as he pings in a bouncer and Amla weaves out of the way. Only a single off the last ball prevents a maiden.

  329. Post update

  330. Not out

So it goes upstairs to third umpire Paul Reiffel - Amla has stepped across his stumps as he usually does, but is it too high? Yes - the ball-tracker shows it sailing over the top of middle stump. Amla - who's not normally a "reviewer" according to Neil Manthorp on TMS - survives.

  331. Umpire review

Amla is trapped in front by Chatara, the umpire's finger goes up but after consultation with his partner, Amla calls for a review...

  332. SA 20-1 (Amla 10*, Du Plessis 1*)

Amla tries to force Panyangara off his legs but Chamu Chibhabha - wearing an enormous red Richie Richardson-style sunhat - makes a superb stop at short mid-wicket. However, there's nothing he can do when Amla executes the shot better, flicking the ball past the square leg umpire for four. The bearded maestro adds a two and a single, moving to 10 from 19 balls. The sedate start continues.

  333. SA 13-1

With high expectations of success from back home, South Africa are looking uncharacteristically cautious against their neighbours at this early stage. Du Plessis watchfully sees off a maiden over from Chatara, while the TMS commentators have to contend with a very loud PA system playing music between overs.

  334. SA 13-1 (Amla 3*, Du Plessis 1*)

Fans are still streaming into Seddon Park - those of you with good memories may recall it as the venue for a Test hat-trick by Ryan Sidebottom in 2008 - and taking their places on the grassy banks. Faf du Plessis takes his place in the middle as De Kock's replacement, he and Amla take a single apiece while Panyangara fires in a horrendous legside wide and keeper Brendan Taylor has to dive full-length to stop it disappearing to the boundary.

A great start for Zimbabwe - time for Hamilton to join Trent Bridge, Albury, Leicester and Chelmsford as the site of one of their World Cup upsets?

    Scorecard

  337. SA 8-0

Panyangara, after that tight first over, gives De Kock too much room outside off stump and the Proteas keeper-batsman tucks in with a four through the covers. A single rotates the strike for the first time, while Panyangara then gets down well to stop the ball with his legs as Amla straight-drives.

Ex-New Zealand wicketkeeper on BBC Test Match Special

"Steady start from both Zimbabwe bowlers. Both have bowled a good line, and we can assume from that tight line that they are trying to create a mistake and take advantage of any movement. Amla is a candidate for lbw early on, I'd suggest, but we know what he can do once he gets established."

  339. SA 3-0 (De Kock 0*, Amla 2*)

Young right-armer Tendai Chatara takes the second new ball from the other end, and right-hander Hashim Amla gets South Africa under way with a confident drive which is stopped just in front of the extra cover boundary as they run two. A further blemish on the over is a legside wide.

  341. SA 0-0

Panyangara has two slips in for the left-handed De Kock, he's not express pace but starts with a decent line and length. De Kock leaves a couple outside off stump and sees off a maiden over with the air of a man opening in a Test match.

Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock stride out to open the innings for South Africa - right-arm seamer Tinashe Panyangara will take the opening over.

If you weren't around for yesterday's New Zealand-Sri Lanka game, a fan took an astonishing one-handed catch in the crowd from a huge six. As he was wearing a sponsor's T-shirt for said catch, he's in the running for a share of prize money. So no surprise that there are plenty of people in such orange T-shirts on the grassy banks today!

South Africa's multi-lingual anthem follows, sounding like it's being sung by a massed choir. The players stand, arms around each other's shoulders.

    Ebony Rainford-Brent

Ex-England batter on BBC Test Match Special

"This is going to be important for Zimbabwe in how they approach the opening game. They have had some really good warm-ups and have got a couple of teams they are looking to beat in their group. Today is about their hitting marks and putting South Africa under pressure as they look to earn a win or two in the later games.

"Of course there will be pressure on South Africa too, even though they are heavy favourites. If they don't dominate then people will be asking questions. It is important that they score 300 plus."

Never mind Adelaide, it's bright and sunny too at Seddon Park, where we're about 10 minutes away from the start of play.

Meanwhile, not a million miles away from Hamilton, elsewhere on North Island, England's women have made 217-9 from their 50 overs after winning the toss against New Zealand in their third one-day international. BBC Sport columnist Heather Knight top scored with 79. We'll try to bring you the odd update from that game too.

While no team has lost more World Cup games than Zimbabwe, their cricketing history is sprinkled with upsets - such as beating Australia at Trent Bridge in 1983, England at Albury in 1992, while in 1999 they shocked India at Leicester and South Africa at Chelmsford.

South Africa, though, have a very strong batting line-up with Farhaan Behardien, a front-line batsman who bowls occasionally, down at number seven. They leave out Kyle Abbott, Wayne Parnell, Aaron Phangiso and Rilee Rossouw from their 15-man squad.

South Africa captain AB de Villiers looks to have been in two minds about what to do, had he won the toss - but will be happy to be batting first in the sunshine.

After England's abject defeat by Australia at the MCG yesterday, another of cricket's - and indeed world sport's - fiercest rivalries - takes place in Adelaide today when India face Pakistan, starting at 03:30 GMT.

However, that game will take a back seat for a couple of hours while we concentrate on another game between two neighbours - South Africa, who are among the favourites for the tournament, face Zimbabwe, who, erm, aren't - with play getting under way at 01:00 GMT.
