"A competitive total is not guaranteed from here by any means as the seam bowlers aren't easy to score against and they will bowl a fair few of the remaining overs."

  2. Shakib 50published at 06:46 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2015

Send for the Headband! Pace bowler Hamid Hassan is recalled, he has four overs left so can finish his spell from this end if required. As we mentioned earlier, Hamid may be a big fan of the movie Rambo, but it's first blood to Shakib Al Hasan in this Hassan v Hasan showdown as the left-hander reaches his 27th ODI fifty from 43 balls with a single. The big paceman gives it everything, but Mushfiqur is on top form, digging out a yorker and scampering a single. This stand is worth 94.

"Mushfiqur Rahim's half century is Bangladesh's fastest World Cup 50 beating Shakib Al Hasan's 47 balls v India in 2011."

  4. Mushfiqur 50published at 06:42 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2015

This has been an excellent innings from Mushfiqur Rahim, who remains Test captain despite no longer leading the one-day side, and he reaches his 19th ODI fifty from 41 balls with another hard-run two. Afghanistan's fielding is starting to get a little scrappy at times. Time to bring back their main bowlers?

"Brilliant. Mushfiqur is a brilliant cricketer and he's made that transition from bright and attractive cameo 30s and 40s to impressive 50s and 100s. I'm not suggesting he'll do that today, but he's illustrating the ability he has."

  6. Ban 204-4published at 06:38 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2015

Powerplay over, Afghanistan can post another fielder back on the boundary, but Mushfiqur now goes aerial, lfifting Aftab for six over mid-wicket into a group of delighted flag-waving Bangladesh fans.

"It's El Scorchio in Canberra, to the extent that plenty are sheltering under umbrellas. Those umbrellas then are an extra implement to wave around when a moment of excitement - usually a Bangladesh boundary - happens. I can hear whistles, horns and drums, on the way to a full band. In my experience, you can also use an umbrella as a guitar, right?"

"It's been a long time since I've seen a powerplay actually work for the batting side. They've got it absolutely right Bangladesh, it's got them back on course and now they can start to think of a score between 260 and 280."

  10. Ban 194-4published at 06:36 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2015

Captain Mohammad Nabi still has to get through one more powerplay over, wiht only three men permitted outside the 30-yard circle - so takes on the responsibility himself. But it's more of the same from Bangladesh's fifth-wicket pair as they find the gaps well, taking eight from the over - and 48 from the powerplay.

"You hear a lot of bowlers these days complaining that they can only have three men on the boundary. They say it's obvious when you set your field what the game plan's going to be, but I'm not sure you can say that here with how Aftab is bowling."

Afghanistan persist with Aftab, who's been a little expensive in this powerplay, but it nearly produces a wicket as Shakib pushes a quick single and Shapoor Zadran's throw only just misses the stumps, when a direct hit would have run him out. Reprieved, Shakib - number one in the ICC's all-rounder rankings - smacks Aftab for back-to-back boundaries.

"Shakib and Mushfiqur now have 11 ODI partnerships over 50, the most for Bangladesh. Second are Mushfiqur and Mahmudullah on nine."

  14. Ban 175-4published at 06:23 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2015

The Bangladesh fans are loving this as Shakib square-drives, Najibullah Zadran scurries after it and they have time to run three which brings up the fifty partnership. Mushfiqur unleashes another cover-driven four, and for the first time today, the Tigers finally seem to have some momentum.

  15. How's stat?published at 06:23 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2015

When Shakib Al Hasan reached 25 in that over, he became the first Bangladeshi to reach 4,000 ODI runs. Tamim Iqbal needs another 10 to join him following his 19 earlier today.

  16. Ban 165-4 (Shakib 25, Mushfiqur 32)published at 06:20 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2015

It's going to be Aftab Alam to share bowling duties in this powerplay, and he's a little off target as he serves up a waist-high full toss to Mushfiqur, which the right-hander can still swat for two wide of mid-on. Meanwhile, Shakib glances an attempted yorker for four to deep backward square leg. This stand is worth 46.

Batting powerplay time, and Hamid Hassan (he of headband fame) returns at the Swimming Pool End. While Mushfiqur might have to work hard to keep his head above water except in the shallow end, the little Bangladesh keeper shows his batting has unexpected depths as he effortlessly uppercuts Hamid for two over the keeper, before whacking a four through mid-wicket. He has 27 from 24 balls, while Shakib has 21 from 24.

  20. Ban 146-4published at 06:09 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2015

Bangladesh need boundaries - and Mushfiqur, who'll take on anything with too much width outside off, obliges with a lofted cover drive for four. Part-time spinner Javed has been expensive for Afghanistan, and I wonder if that's the last we see of him in the attack.
