"It's not exactly ideal going for Bangladesh so far. You would have thought on a track like this they'd be going between four and five-an-over at this stage. They need to find a way of getting to 240 to 250."

  2. Ban 138-4 (Shakib 17, Mushfiqur 13)published at 06:07 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2015

Shapoor Zadran takes a rest with figures of 2-20 from seven overs, and Afghanistan are ringing the changes as it's back to the right-arm seam of Aftab Alam, who sends down a couple of legside wides but otherwise restricts the Bangladesh pair to singles.

As we've not seen Afghanistan in an ODI before, it'll be interesting to see who they ask to bowl in the batting powerplay, which is imminent.

"Afghanistan have been playing out of their skin and it's now left down to two experienced Bangladesh players to try and get something on the board for them as so far, they haven't delivered."

  4. Ban 133-4published at 06:02 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2015

Fellow spinner Javed Ahmadi will finish Samiullah Shenwari's over - and he does so at the cost of three singles.

  6. Ban 130-4published at 06:00 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2015

It sounds a cracking atmosphere at the Manuka Oval in Canberra - the drums, horns, chanting and cheering make it sound like it could be a home game for Bangladesh, but there's plenty of support for Afghanistan too. Play resumes with Samiullah, who bowls one ball which Shakib knocks for a single - and then Samiullah takes his cap and walks away.

We certainly noticed last over that he had been warned for running on the protected area of the pitch - but we only saw one warning, when normally you get a first warning, a final warning, and then you're off. Maybe we missed one - but Shenwari is out of the attack.

"I have to say there's a great deal of commitment and dedication to travelling this distance for this game. I reckon more than 50% of the crowd are wearing replica shirts of either Bangladesh or Afghanistan."

  8. Drinks breakpublished at 05:53 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2015

Mushfiqur shows Shapoor a nice straight bat, he's dug Bangladesh out of trouble in Test cricket a few times, where he's often batted as high as number four, but with only 18 overs left after this one, he's not really got the time to play himself in cautiously... The shackles are finally broken as a square drive flies backward of point for four - Shapoor's 40th delivery, and the first boundary off him. Time for drinks.

"All of the Afghanistan players like to think they can bat. They're all quite flamboyant and I'll tell you, it won't be as disciplined as this bowling effort has been so far."

  10. Ban 123-4published at 05:49 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2015

Afghanistan turn to their seventh bowler - leg-spinner Samiullah Shenwari, who's one of the survivors from the start of Afghanistan's World Cup adventure when they played Japan in a World Cricket League Division 5 match in Jersey in 2008. Their trophy for winning that tournament was presented by TMS's very own Geoffrey Boycott, who might approve of Shenwari's tidy over, which only yields one single. But at the end of the over, Shenwari gets an official warning for running on the pitch from umpire Davis.

  12. Scorecard updatepublished at 05:48 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2015

Bangladesh 122-4 (30 overs) after winning toss

    Batsmen: Shakib 13*, Mushfiqur 3*

    Fall of wickets: 1-47 (Tamim 19), 2-52 (Anamul 29), 3-102 (Soumya 28), 4-119 (Mahmudullah 23)

Bowling figures: Hamid Hassan 4-0-17-0, Shapoor Zadran 6-1-14-2, Aftab Alam 4-0-19-0, Mirwais Ashraf 9-3-32-2, Mohammad Nabi 4-0-16-0, Javed Ahmadi 3-0-21-0

  13. Ban 122-4published at 05:44 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2015

The diminutive wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim is the new batsman, he's tested by a bouncer from Shapoor but then gets off the mark with a wristy two to deep square leg. Bangladesh are in danger of posting a rather below-par score here - their current scoring rate would only get them to 200. Shapoor has 2-14 from six.

"Fantastic hands from the wicketkeeper once again. He's got some great pedigree and shown some real skill with both of his catches. The two opening Afghanistan opening bowlers have become real cult figures in the country and all the youngsters who are fast bowlers either have long flowing hair or headbands in tribute."

  15. WICKETpublished at 05:39 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2015

A tentative edge from Mahmudullah brings another good diving catch from keeper Afsar Zazai, this time to his right - and the delighted Shapoor has his second wicket.

  16. Ban 119-3 (Mahmudullah 23, Shakib 13)published at 05:39 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2015

Even a soft tiger toy, clutched by a Bangladesh fan in the crowd, seems to have its head bowed a little, as if to reflect the Tigers' slightly underwhelming innings. But Shakib waits for a loose delivery from Javed and gives himself room to flay it over mid-wicket for four. He looks like one of those spinners who'll often serve up a four-ball per over.

  17. Appeal - not outpublished at 05:35 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2015

Big appeal from Shapoor as he fires one into Mahmudullah's front pad, but bowling round the wicket in the manner of the great Wasim Akram, the left-armer needed that one to straighten more than it does. When Mahmudullah fishes and misses, Nabi posts a slip - and then a leg slip for the left-handed Shakib, who has a little word with the umpires, who seem happy that the square leg fielder is in front of square (as three men behind square on the leg side would mean a no-ball). Shakib's not happy, but Shapoor has a marvellous 1-11 from five.

"I'm told that there's a big Bangladeshi community in Sydney, a three-hour drive from here, which goes some way to explaining the partisan crowd. However, through disciplined bowling and regular wickets, you feel it is Afghanistan that are on top. But, on a slowish pitch, chasing might be tricky."

  19. Ban 109-3 (Mahmudullah 21, Shakib 5)published at 05:29 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2015

Afghanistan keep Mirwais Ashraf's last over up their sleeves and turn back to bearded off-spinner Javed Ahmadi, who went for 10 off his first over. There's a touch of the Graeme Swanns about his bowling action, and he'll be fairly happy with three singles from the over.
